If OP wants vegan fish, she could go and get a fishing rod and see how long it takes her to catch one.

In this thread we have learned that the op is having a shitty time at the moment and just wants to have a treat that reminds her of better times while fitting in with her faith. And then you come along with an unfunny and unoriginal cunty comment like that. Well fucking done. I hope you feel good.

And I’m not a Buddhist so I’ll swear all I like.

@OonaStubbs oh my goodness how hilarious. Did it take you long to think of that? You’ll notice that you’re not even the first person to make that inane comment on this thread. What a pointless post.

What would be the opposite of comedy gold ? It’s actually embarrassing isn’t it ?

How far are you willing to drive in your presumably electric car? Please be mindful of your carbon footprint while chasing after that faux F&C.

Adding new items to a F&C shop, sounds like a good idea, battering flowers is interesting but why call it a pretend name? Why not banana flower and quinoa? Why not be real? Is it to have the word vegan in your meal choice? O is it to minimise the feeling of missing out? Interesting psychology.

Edited

Interesting psychology?

Amusing turn of phrase for someone so clearly displaying a very snarky form of cognitive dissonance.

@RubieChewsDay Just because something contained all three of those things, it wouldn't be inherently ultra-processed. If I have a cannelloni bean, kale and tofu stew it's not UPF. Whereas a meat sausage almost certainly would be. Also if you're not intending to eat the vegan food which, given your disgust and outrage, I assume you're not, why the hell does it matter to you.

I don't think I mentioned UPF, I just don't like the texture of beans very much so wouldn't be interested in trying a version made out of beans.

My irritation with vegan food branding sometimes stems from just not being able to understand if it's something that I would actually want to eat. I may not be vegan or even vegetarian but sometimes I don't want to eat meat.

OneWildBiscuit · 14/08/2025 19:58

RubieChewsDay · 13/08/2025 23:30

Because it's not bacon, it's a potato covered in herbs and spices to give it the flavour of bacon. I know it's going to be a potato.

I'm allowed to be irritated by the vague way that a lot of vegan food is marketed.

Ok...you do you.

Weird to get so agitated about something you claim not to care about though.

OneWildBiscuit · 14/08/2025 20:03

PetuniaT · 13/08/2025 22:08

What the hell is the point in vegan?👹

You know... compassion, kindness, caring about others and the future of the planet.

Things that are clearly pretty alien to you.

It's amazing how the kindness and compassion of some brings out the cunty ugliness of others

I'm not agitated, I just find it mildly irritating.

Everyone finds some things in life mildly irritating, even things that they don't particularly care about. This thread is honestly the most amount of time I've spent thinking about this topic, and I just happened to be a bit bored and looking for a diversion when I opened it.

VeggiJ · 14/08/2025 20:10

Banana blossom is a good alternative or tofish (tofu fish) I’ve tried both in north east England and very tasty!

If you're buying food labelled vegan in a supermarket then the ingredients list will be on the packaging. If you're buying food labelled vegan in a resturant you can ask the staff. Just like you would for any non vegan food you were unsure of the ingredients of.

CalzoneOnLegs · 14/08/2025 20:16

Thanks to this thread, I have re discoverd pea fritters ! banana blossoms I didn’t know about, mentioned to my sis today and she said she had them in vietnam and they’re lovely. A PP recommended Chesil Chippie I was down there last weekend and saw this shop and they sell samphire too apparently so a visit will be arranged very soon. As I have also never tried that so thank you

I can't think of a time when it hasn't been clear.

I've never seen a menu with a 'veggie burger', for example, where it isn't immediately obvious from the description what that means. I wouldn't order bean or fake meat burgers, and I've never mistakenly done so because I've always been able to see very quickly whether it's the kind of veggie burger I want or not. The 'veggie' just helps you find it in the burger section.

If no actual recognisable food is named in the description at all - 'chikkun', etc., trademark symbols - you're dealing with fake meat and dairy for sure!

I think you might struggle even if you got a vegan substitute most chippies use beef lard to fry in. Which is why they taste so good.

Most chippies haven’t used beef lard for a very long time

No need to get irritated- just read the ingredient list - they’ll be on every pack of processed food.

‘ No catch’ on Brighton sea front does Vegan and Vegetarian (no)fish and chips

Also recommend this! The whole menu is vegan it’s amazing.

Less time than in which you could make a funny joke.

mumuseli · 14/08/2025 23:02

Vegan burgers are a thing.
Vegan sausage is a thing.
^ I’m sure most people accept that and understand it when they see it on a menu.
Vegan fish and chips is a thing, though quite a rare thing, and when it is sold it will usually be explained on the menu whether it’s made from tofu or banana blossom.
Hope that helps the PP above whose heads were exploding.

WillVioletsDad · 14/08/2025 23:48

Fuck me! There are some right nasty people on this thread. After being a vegan for thirty-five years and being on the Internet for thirty years, I know that if you mention veganism online you’ll get a load of hate, but I naively thought Mumsnet would be different. Guess not.

But I don’t get it. Like, I hate gardening. So if I saw a thread asking for advice about what flowers are good for a shaded garden with poor soil… I’d just not click on that thread. I wouldn’t feel the need to go in and make a post about how I think gardening’s a shit hobby. Why would I? Why would anyone? Why shit on someone else’s joy?

Oh and yeah, No Catch in Brighton’s really good. Just across the road from the beach.

It's not just someone else's joy they are shitting on, they are shitting on compassion and someone making the single most effective choice for bettering our planet. And these are mums ffs I hope none of them ever complain about their children's futures thanks to the state of the planet, they certainly don't deserve to if they are willfully bashing people actually trying to make a difference.

People just suck I think.

They actually don’t. They’re very much in the minority. So much so that there’s a website that tells you where you can find them.

Bjorkdidit · 15/08/2025 05:01

It depends where you are. In some places, just about every fish and chip shop uses beef dripping.

I didn’t know that, I used to work in chip shops as a teen and it was always beef lard. certainly my local chippie still uses Beef lard. I wonder if it’s regional? I suspect we take our deep fried chips seriously in Scotland.

Did you mean lard or were you using it as a generic term for animal fat?
