I am a full-time carer looking for a day out of my 24 hour 7 days a week caring responsibilities. I have one day off. I am a Buddhist hoping to recreate a happy day out at the beach eating ‘fish & chips’ and feeling like myself just for a day. But I’m not allowed that. I can’t even ask for restaurant recommendations with attracting criticism and hate.

Why? Why are people like this?

Because this is mumsnet and it is no longer a place of support, but one of vitriol, nitpicking and keyboard warriors just here to snipe.

Ignore them @FABAdvice ... dig out the worthwhile recommendations that have been given on this thread, and enjoy your lovely well deserved day by the sea with whatever vegan fish and chips you choose.
As you relax by the sea, ponder the fact that the weird, negative and downright rude replies you got on this thread have very little significance or importance to anything or anyone.
But also ponder the fact that the thread you started spread some really great suggestions to people looking for some delicious vegan fish and chips.... I've already persuaded dh that we're going to Clevedon for the fish and chips suggested here, so thankyou for starting the thread. ❤️

And as I’ve already said, I hope all the people who can’t cope with vegan things existing and having meaty names never eat Walkers* bacon or chicken crisps - which are both vegetarian and I think vegan.

*other brands are available but I don’t know if they contain meat.

Oh FFS, they are crisps and crisps have flavours on them, no one is expecting to open a packet and find a slice of bacon in there. I'm occasionally a bit curious about what a crisp flavour might taste like but I know I'll get a bit of a potato. I couldn't give a fuck about whether they are vegan or not, I'm too busy cursing Walkers for putting wheat and/ or barely onto every potato they can get their hands on!!!

So it’s ok to call vegan food bacon if it suits you. But not if it doesn’t.

Oh dear lord, I've just realised that this thread is in the holiday topic.

Sorry @FABAdvice for getting sucked into the debate the thread sparked 😳
I hope you find something nice in batter to eat with your chips.

RubieChewsDay · 13/08/2025 22:42

Surely even vegan's want to know what they're choosing when looking at a menu? Is criteria of it being 'not fish' but vaguely in either the shape or texture of a fish enough to make you want to eat something.

The actual menu will almost always say what it is.

But if you're looking for restaurant recommendations do you ask 'Where's a good Indian restaurant in Leeds?' Or 'Where's a good place that serves malai kofta, chole, palak paneer, or aloo saag?'

What? You’ve had loads of recommendations, don’t any of them appeal?

RubieChewsDay · 13/08/2025 23:30

Because it's not bacon, it's a potato covered in herbs and spices to give it the flavour of bacon. I know it's going to be a potato.

I'm allowed to be irritated by the vague way that a lot of vegan food is marketed.

Twitcheye · 13/08/2025 23:31

i don’t know how some people are existing in life with this attitude, how high is your blood pressure with all this stress about stuff you’re not being force to eat?
I love fishing, I love eating fish, when my vegan friend has said let’s go for fish and chips I wasn’t like what can you possibly mean?!? Don’t you just mean a carrot? Anyone with an ounce of common sense will know what op or anyone in that situation is talking about, they want something familiar similar to what they used to eat and those type of things come in various options and the places selling the vegan options list what they are be they tofu, blossom whatever and if they don’t… ask?

MrsR2be · 13/08/2025 23:48

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/08/2025 22:02

Yes, but being vegan is SO much healthier.... 🙄

Usually tofu or banana blossom flavoured with nori so not upf

Bellarose53 · 13/08/2025 23:50

Not the beach, but in Greenwich SE London there's a few places that do halloumi and chips or banana flower and chips

ForeverAndEverCheese · 14/08/2025 00:02

Brighton.

What the hell is the point in vegan fish and chips? Confused

I mean, tbf, I developed an allergy to fish and shellfish (and I used to love fish finger sandwiches) so it's handy for me. Not tofu or meat substitute ones though, I don't like them. You can get it made from banana blossoms which is then soaked in seaweed or vegan "fish sauce" to give the flavour. It flakes like fish. It means I can sometimes get something similar to fish without the risk of death 🤷🏻

Ignore it. Many people have dietary choices or allergies (myself included - due to allergies, vegan fish options have been great for me in that respect) unfortunately too many people don't seem to understand or be able to be non judgemental about things that aren't "the norm". It's a little bit sad that people feel the need to tear others down, ridicule things or play dumb but, hey ho, pay them no mind and focus on the positive responses you get. Life is too short to spend it upset by strangers. Some of us are nice. I can't help with your request but there are some amazing vegan fish recipes out there - look for banana blossom battered "fish". It's lovely and I also have vegetarian/vegan restaurant suggestions in London if you are ever looking for that. Have a blessed day x

It sounds rank. Sadly, when you opt out of certain food groups, you can't have what you want.

Except they can, several posters have provided them with places they can do exactly this, which is all they were asking, not for your opinion on their food choices.

You got masses of good recommendations. You can choose to focus on the shitty comments, or ignore them and take one of the good suggestions.

Not that I think people should be shitty, but ‘ignore the bad, thank the good’ is a happier way to live. For you, not them.

So that people who can't eat fish for whatever reason can still indulge in the taste and the 'normal' experience that comes with eating fish and chips, along with everyone else?
It's amazing what one has to explain to (what I assume are) grown adults on here sometimes.

Fucking hell, I always thought MN was full of fairly open, educated women, but apparently not, and I've been here 18 years.

Thinking the same. There’s a touch of the Daily Mail outraged reader about these responses.

@FABAdvice I hope you get the relaxing day you want and deserve. And enjoy every single mouthful of your vegan fish and chips, safe in the knowledge that each bite is offending a carnivore 😆

I don't know where you are but if you ever find yourself in or near south Wales, the Queen Inn is well worth a trip. I ate there 3 days on the trot recently whilst on a work trip.

I'm currently trying to work out if we can logistically do a day trip to Brighton specifically to go for vegan fish and chips. We went to Lyme Regis recently and there was no option anywhere, ended up having Asian street food which was amazing, but not quite the vibe I was looking for!

Does eating meat destroy people's brain cells or something? Why don't you read one of the previous 17 pages of replies?

Clevedon is within reasonable travelling distance to me and I looked at the menu but couldn't see a vegan fish alternative, might be worth a call before hand (although their cauliflower nuggets sound great too!)

Tbf I don’t think they’re ‘faux’ idiots, I’m pretty sure they’re the real thing 🤣.
The insane triggering on this thread has been marvellous. Keep it up.

I said faux ‘confused’ idiots! It’s the confused bit that’s fake not the fact they’re idiots. That bits nailed on! Angry little people with sad little lives that try and start a barny on a Wednesday night over a woman wanting to know where she can enjoy a vegan food item parading as a fish. Can’t imagine being so pathetic!
