This reminds me of another thread and the comment "they would be vegan, but taste of sadness" 😔

Ouch! There are some nasty people on here. Why even bother to open a thread about something you're not interested in? Oh yeah, to bully a vegan. Well done. Hope you are pleased with yourselves. I am a full-time carer and I need a break.

For those that suggested No Catch Co, is it within walking distance of a beach you can sit on?

I think people generally (me included) just experience a minor irritation with terms like vegan fish, vegan beef etc. because they’re misnomers and a lot people don’t like things pretending to be something they’re not. Your thread has just provided people with an anonymous opportunity to vent this annoyance, it’s not personal to you. There is just something so profoundly irritating with how vegan food is marketed.

Wow. Thank you for that thoughtful reply.

I think you might struggle even if you got a vegan substitute most chippies use beef lard to fry in. Which is why they taste so good.

Where do you live ? All the chippies here use vegetable oil apart from Harry Ramsdens which uses Beef Dripping as standard but also veg oil if requested (its awful and overpriced whatever is used to be honest) just wondering if it’s regional to use dripping

'...our food' is tricky. Because if we care about the environment, everyone should eat less meat. They've done studies and when a menu says (example), 'vegan fish' rather than 'battered tofu' about half as many people eat it. Labelling something 'vegan' reduces consumption a lot. You can imagine a baked potato place with a baked beans potato; label it 'vegan' almost none of the people who previous ate it will. A few vegans might seek it out but they probably already would.

Call things whatever you like but there is an issue with labeling.

Fair point, well made, as usual!

Imagine being profoundly irritated by how some foods are marketed. Not just a minor irritation, but a profound one. So much so that you enjoy having an anonymous vent at a stranger online. What a weird mental state to be in.

Good job no one is forcing you to eat it, eh!

I can see why she left ¾ of it on the plate now ...
She admitted it was terrible also ... wish she said so before I tried it but hindsight is 20/20.

Unfortunately you get vegetarian or vegan stuff snuck into buffets etc with no warnings or labels. My flatmate was caught out by this at a party, ate a tofu "chicken nugget" and deeply regretted it. Tofu really doesn't agree with her ...

ChompandaGrazia · 13/08/2025 21:21

I wonder if these people who get upset by vegan bacon are also upset by bacon crisps, often also vegan as a rule.

I do agree that in the likes of a buffet meat alternatives should be made clear, but also so the vegetarians can get some before the meat eaters have it all because the wanted to see what it’s like.

I get this, I'm allergic to Quorn, it makes me really ill. I have to check in similar situations to make sure its not being served as meat , because it's not and it will put me in hospital.

But why? Why does it bother you so much?

Ultimately it bothers me because calling something vegan fish means I have no idea what it actually is, other than not fish or made from any type of animal product. Is it made of tofu or some type of bean or a vegetable or an ultra processed mix of all of these? Tell me what the food is, not what the food isn’t.

SilenceInside · 13/08/2025 21:36

I mean, you could ask at the chippie before you order, “what’s the vegan fish made out of”? if they haven’t said on the menu. Most of the time the menu makes it clear what it is for the benefit of the confused. And, why would you be ordering it given it’s clearly being labelled vegan, which gives you a big clue that it might be about to profoundly irritate you. So avoid! No problem.

borntoblossom · 13/08/2025 21:37

Haven't RTHT as seems to be full of pedantic comments. Not sure where you are, but Papa's fish and chips in Cleethorpes, Blackpool and Scarborough do vegan chips and tofish, it's a bit bland but nice with curry sauce.

Gabby's Chippy in Bridlington is amazing and has a vegan menu with loads of options (order in advance). It's a bit away from the beach but well worth picking up and driving to the beach with it.

I don't think many do now as a lot of them sell vegan/vegetarian options, and all the fries come from the same place.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 13/08/2025 21:43

Does vegan fish mean a fish that has been fed only on a vegan diet?

Genius idea. Loads of coastal fish farms with normal types of fish fed only on vegetables.!!!

Enjoy

Tofush is delicious and just as healthy as battered fish. It is tofu wrapped in nori and then battered. The nori gives it a remarkably good flavour akin to fish. There are very, very few chippies that fry in animal fat these days. I would love to find a seaside chippy offering tofush too.

Here's a thought, why not promote the vegan product for what it is, celebrate it, give it it's own identity and not conflate it with something it isn't or never will be.

A vegan wouldn't eat fish, so why Identify the vegan ingredient with it ? That doesn't seem to me to align with veganism at all.

Let the Banana Blossom stand proud in all its battered fruity glory I say :-)

Purplekittenfurball · 13/08/2025 21:49

I had a battered pickle and chips on Southwold beach today! From the place on the pier. Was delicious 😋

Are you a vegan or likely to buy vegan products at a fish and chip shop? If not, then you're not the demographic they're aiming at so what you'd rather it was called seems quite beside the point!

HazeyjaneIII · 13/08/2025 21:53

If something is called vegan fish, it will say what it is made of, or you can ask... food establishments have to provide a list of ingredients.
In the case of a buffet where nothing is labelled and is a mish mash of vegetarian and vegan food snuggling in with the meaty options (this seems like a shite way to organise a buffet... and a killer for thise with allergies, but hey ho!) ...then it might be an idea to avoid, if you are worried about the risk of biting into something you might find disgusting, or something that might make you sick. This thread is getting seriously bizarre.

You illustrate my point, the product is being marketed as Fish for people who dont eat Fish and would generally find eating animal flesh abhorrent ...whether Im a vegan or would eat it (yes I would) is irrelevant to my views
