I've never been to a fish and chip shop that sells vegan 'fish'... that doesn't say what it is

That was, pretty much my point. Its a meaningless label so unsurprisingly generates questions.

And yet, so many of us understood exactly what the OP meant when she asked her initial question... without feeling the need to post fatuous comments like, 'no such thing exists'
As a family, when someone says, 'I fancy fish and chips for tea'... we all know what they mean, even though only 1 of the 5 of us actually have fish, we know this because we buy them in a fish and chip shop!!
I think most people understand that fish and chips is an all inclusive term, which encompasses all the glories of deep fried battered goods!

It was the person asking who used the description here, though, so presumably she was open to different options.

And loads of people have responded with different fish and chip substitutes. I’ve found the tips really interesting. Banana blossom I knew, but I will be looking out for deep fried tofu in seaweed in future.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 13/08/2025 15:50

So what should she have asked?

"I would like to have an unhealthy but virtue-signalling takeaway meal thay is served in a box wrapped in paper, can be eaten on the beach, includes chips, includes a battered item or items that may be made of a plant- based protein or other plant substance, excludes all animal products (except accidental fragmentary inclusions), and roughly approximates the sensory experience produced by the traditional dish colloquially known as 'fish & chips', while acknowledging that it will not be an exact duplicate and indeed that 'fish & chips' can be used to refer to multiple possible combinations of fried potato sticks (not to be confused with 'sticks' consisting of small pieces of wood that have become detached from a tree) served alongside battered and fried marine, finned, gill-bearing vertebrates or larger invertebrates or even in the case of 'scampi' potentially pieces of finned marine vertebrate masquerading as crustaceans."

Would that satisfy everyone?

HazeyjaneIII · 13/08/2025 16:19

Maybe something a bit snappier like... Fake Imitation Seafood Hopefully. We could call it FISH for short.

And someone would still have come along and said why would you eat that, yuk.

3luckystars · 13/08/2025 16:53

onion rings and chips maybe ?

vegan fish is very funny 😁

Fifthtimelucky · 13/08/2025 17:57

I haven’t read the whole thread, so don’t know if anyone has mentioned it already, but if you are in north Cornwall, there is a nice café in Bude called The Olive Tree that serves vegan fish (made from banana blossom) and chips. There are tables outside along the canal, and it’s only a couple of minutes walk from a big sandy beach. See screenshot from Google maps.

Dawnb19 · 13/08/2025 18:03

I dont know any. All the ones I know even fry their chips in the same fat at the fish.

IMissSparkling · 12/08/2025 17:01

What the hell is the point in vegan fish and chips? Confused

Erm not killing fish? People are entitled to not eat fish or meat

OverVerdant · 13/08/2025 18:15

I got it in Padstow but not in the posh fish & chip resto. It was a place opposite the beach.

MrsR2be · 13/08/2025 18:15

Where in the UK? Blackpool has Papas for tofish and chips

Xcxlxn · 13/08/2025 18:25

Oh OP you did half trigger the fragile meat eaters on this thread

hopefully a useful answer
Elliots fish & Chips Hunstanton Norfolk is fabulous a whole vegan menu, sausage, fish, scampi versions of everything.

i used to live an hour away, but moved away a couple of years back and I miss it so much!

mintydoggyv · 13/08/2025 18:27

Ah so chips are ok can't think where you will grow Peggy fish although our chippy does a nice veggy sausage

Zippedydodah · 13/08/2025 19:07

How do you know if a fish is vegan ( or not….) 🤔

It will be the fish that all the other fish will be rolling their eyes at and making snarky comments about, because it said it would like an algae burger.

QuaverQuanta · 13/08/2025 19:37

OK, question for the triggered meat eaters, if anyone is honest enough willing to answer. It is an anonymous forum after all...

Why do you react in this way as a presumably mature adult? Be honest. Is it your own conscience or cognitive dissonance? If not, what is it? Im genuinely interested and I'm sure my fellow veegz are too

Yes, why do the meat eaters get so upset about the idea that vegans might want to eat a vegan replica of fish and chips?

Why?

And I ask that as a meat eater myself.

Brighton, obviously! Don't listen to the people here, there is loads of amazing vegan food in Brighton and it's on the coast. No catch for sure for fish and chips but man there are a ton of great vegan restaurants in Brighton, I miss it there.

LoopyLoo1991 · 13/08/2025 20:07

I tried some of my friend's 'vegan fish substitute' in batter when she left some ... it was vile ... 🤮
It was worse than the vegetarian sausages I had at a barbecue I tried ... 🤢

ChildFreeAndOhSoHappy · 13/08/2025 20:12

murasaki · 12/08/2025 17:08

It sounds rank. Sadly, when you opt out of certain food groups, you can't have what you want.

You sound rank, honestly. What kind of person is so triggered by someone with compassion who doesn't want to ruin the planet? Usually people who polluted it with a bunch of shitty kids, make no effort to make the world a better place yet complain about the world their kids are inheriting. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Good job no one is forcing you to eat it, eh!

ChildFreeAndOhSoHappy · 13/08/2025 20:20

I wonder how many women on mumsnet complain about the future their children can have on a dying planet while also bashing vegans? The sheer idiocy is astounding.

It’s not fish and chips 😂😂😂

Lilysu · 13/08/2025 20:35

murasaki · 12/08/2025 17:18

It's not fish though, fish isn't vegan, so her proposed dinner is something else. And that's fine, just call it what it is.

I'm not the fool here.

Like hotdogs ?

It’s not fish and chips 😂😂😂

So glad you turned up to make that completely new point…..
