What is vegan fish?

Sea weed.

There used to be a Trades Descriptions Act, you couldn't name something incorrectly. Surely fish is the animal that lives in the sea, if people want vegan stuff then call it something else, it's not fish. Hope your mini-mind understands the word 'fish' but on the altar of right-on the minority make their own rules.

I think you'd have to have a very mini mind to be deceived into thinking a meal with the word vegan in it contained an animal of any sort. So I hardly think the legal protection of the TDA is required to prevent consumers being deceived into thinking vegan fish contains fish.
Unless you had previously thought it meant the fish itself was vegan? Like grass fed beef?

Does your own mini-mind not understand that if something is called vegan fish, it is a vegan alternative to fish?

RE Trade Descriptions Act, dairy terms such as milk, cheese etc are reserved descriptions and products using those words must be dairy - so soya milk is commonly labelled "soya drink." Reserved descriptions don't seem to exist for fish or meat, so "vegan fish" is a perfectly allowable term for a product. Under the Consumer Rights Act labels must not be misleading. It seems that you're in the miniority if you believe that anybody is going to mistake vegan fish for something that was once alive and swimming in the ocean.

I like ‘vegan’ fish🙂 It tends to he known as fish-less fillets, in either batter or breadcrumbs if bought from the supermarket. I quite like it - or the fish-less fingers. Different brands can have different textures, though.

I’ve never tried banana blossom fish-less items but it’s on my list to try.

The main problem I find is, it is sometimes difficult to find a chippy that doesn’t use vegetable oil for the chips and use lard / dripping or some such for everything.

Another problem for me is if they don’t have separate fryers, although many do.

I tend to have just chips and mushy peas from the chippy for peace of mind but it is off putting to start eating the chips…and then detect a fishy taste because of some cross contamination in frying.

I really don’t want chips cooked with some fish juice.

This place kills me sometimes.

OP asks a valid and non controversial question

Several mumsnet posters lose their minds and manners

WTF 😂

I hope you don't refer to hotdogs, and instead call them reconstructed corpse bits and arseholes.
Meat eaters mostly wouldn't eat what they do if it were called what it actually is.

Yep, came to say the say thing. Hotdogs, hamburgers, bacon etc & then steak, pork, gammon. Meat eaters should call it what it is, cow or pig flesh by their argument! So many triggered carnivores for a simple question from the OP.

Panterusblackish · 12/08/2025 20:29

There was a place called Vish and Chips in Leeds that did deep fried banana flower, but its actually shut down which really surprised me.

I'm not vegan but really surprised by how hostile some responses are. I love a burger but my favourite is a vegan recipe turtle bean burgers, it's got chunks of sweetcorn in and is flavoured with lemon and coriander. Totally delicious.

Notallscumbags · 12/08/2025 20:31

Definitely Hunstanton. They have a fabulous vegan food truck on the prom. Sell all sorts of vegan fish and chip shop things.

Stardust75 · 12/08/2025 20:32

This is so funny to me. All the anger over someone asking for vegan food recs like they've asked for help to commit a murder!!! Good old mumsnet never fails.

Vish was great, I was saddened when it closed down.
They had so much choice!
They even did vegan shaped cylinders in batter 😉

Banned? No one is forcing you to eat it. Actually the definition of fish is rather vague and debatable so perhaps you should concern yourself with that, considering how many species of “fish” have been used for “fish and chips”.

No such thing as a fish.

Good grief. Let the poor woman enjoy her vegan fish and chips! this thread really brought all the arseholes to the yard.

The burger sounds delicious. Do you have the recipe?

Not this BS. Do you actually believe it yourself?

Nobody actually believes that vegan bacon is real bacon.

People who choose not to eat meat for animal welfare reasons may still miss the taste and texture of meat. They are allowed to, how scandalous!! The "courage of their convictions" is that animals shouldn't be killed for their food, not that nobody should enjoy the taste of bacon!

Wonder if OP calls her hotdogs ground up, seasoned left over ears, arseholes and lips encased in intestines ?

sandwichlover93 · 12/08/2025 20:55

Clevedon on the pier.

jhmlwos · 12/08/2025 20:56

I can’t seem to link this outwith FB. But if you look at glenkirlie larder. She speaks very well about “fake meats and fish” and why that is not correct.

Vegan means fried in high trans fat hydrog fat. I mean... why would you want that? Lard is lovely stuff.

No you won't they eat anything. We have vegan fish and chips here in Glastonbury but sadly it isn't by the sea.

walkingnightmare · 12/08/2025 21:01

Linda's Fish and Chip Shop in Cullen has 11 different vegan options on the menu including vegan fish and vegan fish fingers. Highly recommended.

Jaxhog · 12/08/2025 21:06

What's wrong with vegan fish and chips? I (probably) wouldn't eat them as I like fish, but why would I care if someone else does?
