And, you always get the tedious ‘how do you know if someone’s vegan’ ‘joke’. Well it’s always meat eaters than pop up on threads like this taking people being vegan as some kind of personal affront.

@FABAdvice, ask HQ to move this to the vegan section to avoid all the people who can’t cope with the idea that other people eat different food to them.

Agreed, and I eat meat.

I once knew the most insufferable man who was so anti vegan and so pro meat it was literally his whole personality. No one, including any vegans that had the misfortune to cross his path, banged on about it as much as he did. His surname on Facebook was Bacon ffs.

You know the type.

Lookingtodate · 12/08/2025 21:17

if you are in Scotland friends love the chippy in Largs vegan stuff. Blue lagoons in Glasgow do vegan too. We dont use lard in scottish chippies

TheEllisGreyMethod · 12/08/2025 21:18

But cruel to make the fish be vegans ...

This place kills me sometimes.

OP asks a valid and non controversial question

Several mumsnet posters lose their minds and manners

WTF 😂

So true! Why does it bother people so much that someone chooses not to eat animal products, and wants recommendations from others who are in the same boat? it’s the same as posting to ask for a nice steak restaurant. You can get vegan options everywhere these days because guess what, people want it!

Literally, why click on the thread if they are so triggered?

I like most of the vegetarian food that I have tried, I'm not sure if I've ever tried vegan food.

But it was called what it was. I wouldn't eat vegan bacon, vegan chicken etc just on general principle. Because it's dishonest. Vegetarians/Vegans should have the courage of their convictions and call their food what it actually is. And it shouldn't be designed to imitate meat at all.

Do you realize that you sound incredibly stupid? Genuinely, I'm not being unkind, you sound thick as (vegan) mince.

Firstly, you don't get to tell vegans how they should behave.

Secondly, who the fuck cares if you eat vegan food? Who is asking you to eat vegan food? Don't eat it, I don't give a shit if you think I lack the courage of my convictions. It actually requires no courage to order a vegan fish and chips at all, or a battered banana blossom for that matter.

It's certainly not "dishonest" because the absolute last thing anyone would want to imply to a vegan is that the food is actually made from an animal. Do you understand? There's no dishonesty we know exactly what we're ordering, unlike the rest of you with your hotdogs and haribo.

I didn't give up animal products because I don't like eating them, I gave up because it's not ethical. Just like millions of Coke drinkers drink slimline because they like Coke, but they don't like the calories. Should pregnant women have the courage of their convictions to only drink Orange juice instead of non alcoholic beer?

This thread is very likely designed purely for the froth, but to see pages and pages of people being massive fucking twats about something that that doesn't affect them AT ALL is a bit surprising.

Oh I do. Undoubtably farts on every year about Easter Eggs not having the word Easter on them, but can’t cope with something that isn’t meat being called a sausage.
Also they carry on about electric car bursting into flames every ten minutes yet happily carry some knock off vape in their pocket two inches from their balls.

Imagine never having eaten beans on toast.

I'm an atheist, but I know equivalent atheist and I just think why? It should be something that never even crosses your mind!

I'm not vegan but LOOOOL

Sorry no actual recommendations but Brighton is very vegan (and everything) friendly?

Or even just a simple carrot! Not that vegan food is just carrots, but vegetables are obviously ‘vegan food’.

...Or an apple or a banana or a jammie dodger or an oreo or a sainsburys custard doughnut...

CowardlyTofuTart · 12/08/2025 21:34

Someone up thread is asking if we'd like to be served vegetables that are really meat. I mean, is this next level trolling or are they really terrified that people are going to serve them pea flake and kale "fish" burgers?

I had some amazing vegan fish and chips from the Old Boathouse at Amble if you’re ever in Northumberland. Tofu wrapped in nori and in batter.

Glad to see another recommendation for The Old Boathouse.

Saw vegan fish and chips on menu at Sandy’s in Folkestone today - very popular fish and chip shop by the harbour arm. Great ice cream show (Herbert’s) around the corner that does lovely vegan gelato.

SeaDippingandLattes · 12/08/2025 21:41

Aberavon beach have Francos - which does some really lovely options :) also ice cream options, coffee, cake etc!

Porthcawl has the boat house that offers me nice pies and chips - really interesting pie options and you can sit on a beach or on a bench outside or even go wild and sit in the harbour….

ogmore by sea has ‘the catch’ which offers things like tempura veg and chips…bit more rural with some incredible views near there…

I hope you get your break and your tea by the sea x

Beach Buoys in Margate do vegan fish and chips. When I went there a few years ago it was the banana blossom kind and amazing. They did vegan tartare sauce too. Highly recommend

Pixiepop14 · 12/08/2025 21:50

Not always by the sea but I had a vegan “fish” (for the sakes of the arguments on here!) and chips from Saving Nemo at a vegan food festival last year and it was incredible! They travel all over

Slightyamusedandsilly · 12/08/2025 17:23

Bullshit. Vegan fish is a thing. Of course she can have it.

Vegan fish is not a thing - fish is not vegan. She wants a substitute, which is fine, but call it what it is - which is NOT fish - and calling it fish doesn't change that.

At the pier in Southwold they do the MOST DELICIOUS pickled gherkin - it changed my life.

choppolata · 12/08/2025 22:02

Not RTFT but Elliot's in Hunstanton are right on the front and have a full vegan menu.

HazeyjaneIII · 12/08/2025 22:05

By the way, Chez Fred in Westbourne (nr Bournemouth) is one of the best fish and chip places I've been to. They do battered halloumi* *and battered banana blossom (which I'm not a big fan of). Dh says their fish is also amazing.

*they are kind enough to call this 'fish' in inverted commas, so no meat eaters are tricked into eating it. They do NOT, however do this with fishcake🧁or fish fingers👉 ... so keep your wits about you!
