Honey Rum in Lanzarote 😋 with ice.

That stuff is delicious

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 18/07/2025 05:56

The first time I had aioli in Spain when I was about 6.

greek food the following summer, pretty much everything apart from fish although now, Stifado and a pork dish in coriander are my favourites.

CharlotteCChapel · 18/07/2025 09:02

Stifado in Rhodes, it's a beef stew with whole shallots.

Retsina all over Greece although it's a bit more refined now. Whenever I see it in Lidl I grab some⁰

Crodino.
Great if you don't drink alcohol

You might already know that you can buy this in Sainsbury's now. I only discovered it last week and it will be a game changer for me this summer!

The Cypriot pork in coriander dish mentioned upthread is Afelia. My dad is Cypriot and this was made a lot at home when I was growing up. My DH hates it though so I don't make it very often, and it seems to have fallen out of favour in restaurants over there 🙁

I'd add horchata from Spain - although it has to be ice-cold on a very hot day. I believe there is a slightly different version in Mexico but haven't tried that. And, although a bit more low-brow, coconut m&ms (USA)!

Kinnie

Kinnie!! And especially Kinnie Spritz. Delicious. I wish I could have brought a case full back with me. It was cheap as chips there, but extortionate to source it over here.

Not a holiday discovery, but the result of working for a Danish company and attending corporate and Christmas dinners over there.

Danish-style remoulade.
Danish hot dogs "with everything" i.e. remoulade, raw and crispy-fried onions, ketchup, mustard.
Different types of pickled herrings on rye, with an ice-cold Aalborg snaps "for the fish to swim in."
Gammel Dansk and Ga-Jol shots - strong licorice-based shots (Ga-Jol are actually small sweets)
"X-mas" beer and other strong Danish beers brewed for Christmas and Easter - knock-out stuff if you're not careful.
Ris a la mande (Danish Christmas rice pudding).
Thin chocolate slices to put on rolls or a slice of bread (Pålægschokolade)

As a child when visiting France in the early 80s it was Orangina. A really good fizzy orange with real orange bits when back in the UK we had sugar filled orangeade.
As an adult- Cuarenta y tres/licorice 43 which we discovered in Gran Canaria.

Lamb in a bag - also Greece
Spetses fish

Roseinbloom20 · 18/07/2025 16:34

Clam chowder served IN a bowl of crusty bread in San Francisco 10 years ago while on honeymoon. Sadly, never had it since 😔 heaven in a bowl (of bread!)

PauliesWalnuts · 18/07/2025 16:35

Loukamades! Little Greek warm doughnuts served with honey and cinnamon - perfect with ice-cream. I was there last week and had them three times in 6 days!

Just to say Sainsbury's do retsina too. It's the Greek Kourtaki brand (that sells in Greece too).
It has a yellow label and is very reasonably priced.

Oregano crisps in Greece

pizzaHeart · 18/07/2025 16:45

@HalloumiFries are you sure it was Sainsbury’s?
Their website doesn’t have it.
Tesco denies me access for some reason so can’t check it.
