@HalloumiFries are you sure it was Sainsbury’s?
Their website doesn’t have it.
Tesco denies me access for some reason so can’t check it.

Definitely Sainsbury's. It was actually mentioned on Saturday Kitchen the weekend before last and I punched the air in happiness 😂. I headed out later the same day and bought 3 x 4-packs.

HalloumiFries · 18/07/2025 16:51

It shows on the website for me https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/crodino-nat-x4-175ml

As a child when visiting France in the early 80s it was Orangina. A really good fizzy orange with real orange bits when back in the UK we had sugar filled orangeade.
As an adult- Cuarenta y tres/licorice 43 which we discovered in Gran Canaria.

Omg my brother used to rave about Orangina! By the time it was in the UK and we were adults... Bit shit really!

Whereas those long strips of sweets were always good for gifts / keeping!

What is this please?

Filo pastry and sheep's cheese in a sort of layered pie. A bit like spanokopita. Delicious.

As a vegetarian 17 (early 90s) year old in Barbados... The most wonderful veggie curry that wasn't on the menu, chef did it especially for me. I think it was my first introduction to coconut milk. It's a long standing fond memory!

Lots of things back in the 80s on family holidays that are more normal here now.

Mayo with chips in Belgium in the 80s
Paprika crisps in France around the same time
Hot rotisserie chickens also France
Open sandwiches in Denmark
Remoulade sauce - think that was Denmark too
Tiny pancakes (poffertjes) in The Netherlands, we bought a pan for them hone and some packet mix

More recently
Hugo Spritz in Italy (I don’t like Aperol) - you can get it in Spoons now.

Cheese and honey in Turkey about 20 years ago,
I had never seen that combination before and it’s been a firm favourite ever since.

Stuffed peppers in Greece when I was 7 which was almost 50 years ago. My DM started cooking them regularly when we returned home, both versions were so good.

Mayismymonth · 18/07/2025 17:30

Great thread. Gazpacho in the warm Summer.

HornyHornersPinger · 18/07/2025 17:32

Haven't rtft so no idea if its been mentioned but,
Gyros and tzatziki in Corfu.

Yum.

Takoneko · 18/07/2025 18:02

Fruit and cream sandwiches in Japan.

Bubble tea in Taiwan about 15 years ago. Now it’s commonplace, but it wasn’t back then.

Omurice in Taiwan (I know it’s Japanese but I first had it in Taiwan).

The light crispy style of Belgian waffles in Bruges. I’d only had the more cakes ones before, but far prefer the crispy ones.

You might already know that you can buy this in Sainsbury's now. I only discovered it last week and it will be a game changer for me this summer!

The Cypriot pork in coriander dish mentioned upthread is Afelia. My dad is Cypriot and this was made a lot at home when I was growing up. My DH hates it though so I don't make it very often, and it seems to have fallen out of favour in restaurants over there 🙁

I'd add horchata from Spain - although it has to be ice-cold on a very hot day. I believe there is a slightly different version in Mexico but haven't tried that. And, although a bit more low-brow, coconut m&ms (USA)!

Yes Waitrose do it as well. I get mine from Delicatezza as DH likes the white one too and I can also stock up on Grisbi and Italian crisps 😋

Bombardino Calimero in the Italian Alps. It’s a combination of advocaat, rum & coffee, topped with cream. So good!

Summer24isRubbish · 18/07/2025 18:20

Lemon lime bitters Australia… love it !

CrazyBaubles · 18/07/2025 18:42

During a trip around the southern states of America, proper smoked BBQ, fried chicken and gumbo.
Haven’t quite managed to recreate either at home but I’m getting closer.

Trdelnik (I think) in Prague.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 18/07/2025 18:50

I had my first ever chicken katsu curry in Japan in 2002 and that was the first time I'd ever had edamame too. We bought a load of golden curry from the supermarket there so that we could make Katsu curry at home. We then could only get it from the Japan centre in London until finally Waitrose started stocking it. I used to get frozen edamame from an Asian supermarket near Edgware as I couldn't find it anywhere else. Wagamama was the only other place we could get it then.

First time I had Prosecco was in Venice in 2003 - we came home and tried to find it in the supermarket here. Then it was suddenly everywhere.

Also discovered Cremant on a wine tasting tour in Beaun in France and brought two crates home with us - now alway buy that rather than Prosecco.

Orange pie from Corfu - found a recipe and made my own when we came home but thankfully they now sell it in Lidl during Greek week.

Ackee and saltfish in Jamaica
Piments farcis in Réunion

Sobrassada from Mallorca. Like nduja but with paprika so a bit sweeter. Dotted on a pizza with honey or in a pasta sauce. Absolutely delicious.
