Are you changing your holiday plans next year due to heatwave?

Currently in Spain and it’s so hot we have to stay mainly inside during the day. Luckily the hotel has an indoor pool. Are you changing your holiday plans due to the heatwave we see in Southern Europe at the moment or are you ok holidaying in the heat?

We do a variety of holidays at different times rather than traditional summer holidays - for example we went to Boston and NYC last April and are going to Porto in November. I would have never touched Greece or Spain with a barge pole after early July anyway.

That said, we are currently in tne Occitanie region of France and it has been a hot week - average of 32 degrees during the day. It has mostly been fine - we tend to do sights early, lunch then siesta inside and then out in the evening. The town lifestyle is set up for heat here.

Long runs of temperatures in the low to mid thirties are fairly common here but, we have noticed two differences in recent years- it is not usually so hot for such prolonged periods at this point in summer and also these days temperatures don't seem to be dropping at night. So yesterday it peaked at 34 degrees mid afternoon but was still 30 degrees at 9pm.

@alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 Don't worry if it is cold and wet. The country is set up for it.

Also take the opportunity to travel around, with the novelty of being in another country in an hour or so. Look for rail deals. So much easier to arrive in the centre of a city. You don’t lose much time compared to flying if you factor in getting to and from the airport and check in times.

I am from the UK and spent many chilly decades living in the UK and Ireland so I know the score! Perth winter is like UK summer, only with more storms. My folks are in NI so I will be lucky to hit 20 never mind 30. I am packing jumpers and will buy a raincoat when I get there!

I was thinking of this thread today and a lot of us avoiding Mediterranean countries in the summer - but I know someone heading off to Croatia at the end of the week and it’s going to be quite a good bit hotter here at home than the forecast they are expecting there. Sounds perfect weather for their holiday, 26-28 degrees with some cloud whilst we are due to have 32 degrees with no wind. Dreading it.

No but I suspect we are unusual, frequently in the Middle East in summer too. We love heat, mid 40s and all!

That’s fairly unusual to be fair. We’re going to Croatia the week after and by then it’s due to be 30/31 there and 24/25 and rainy here.

I live in mallorca and you do get used to the heat, but it is draining and this year june was unseasonably hot. Most of us either leave for cooler climes in the summer or retreat indoors. As I have pets I stay put and work around it! I was in the south of France last week and it was even worse than here so that was a waste of time. I spent the entire time diving into air conditioned cafes for some respite!!

Crikeyalmighty · 09/07/2025 14:32

I’m in Majorca by the way at moment a lovely 30 degrees with a breeze!!

Crikeyalmighty · 09/07/2025 14:33

@whirlyhead lovely here today by the way-my idea of perfect

fussychica · 09/07/2025 15:10

Yes. We recently returned early from a road trip through France due to the weather which was going to be 38 degrees plus for the final leg in the south. We'd already experience mid 30s earlier on and found some days it was hard work doing the activities we wanted.
We're in Spain this autumn and winter.
Next year we are considering an April trip and a May trip rather than late June again.

TizerorFizz · 09/07/2025 19:21

I’m in Iceland right now.

People are shunning heatwave countries for uk! Bookings already for our holiday house.

Howyoualldoworkme · 09/07/2025 20:11

We've just come back from Italy where it was 30C and over every day.
Been going in June for a good few years but decided that next year we're going in mid May.
DH is on heart medication that affects the way he deals with heat so we weren't able to do very much at all. It was an effort even sitting outside.

We normally go to Greece / Spain / Turkey but after last year in Turkey, never again . It was hellishly hot !
A lovely five star hotel but even the air conditioning could not keep up and it was too hot to do anything other than sit in water .
Even the sea was hot .....
I was never so happy to come back to Dublin .

Heading to Slovenia next week , on to Lake Bled and then to a nice hotel in Saalbach for some mountain walking/ biking / rafting / zip lining/ lake swimming and good food .

Pointless going somewhere you cannot leave the building ......

TizerorFizz · 09/07/2025 23:33

Some parts of Slovenia are 29 degrees next week. There’s no cool part of mid Europe.

Crushed23 · 10/07/2025 19:15

I’m heading to London mid next week and it appears to be slightly cooler than the current heatwave, which is great. Maybe with climate change it will go the same way as NYC where people actually try to escape the hot weather instead of going in search of more hot weather.

WhineAndWine1 · 10/07/2025 20:00

I have just rebooked Turkey for next year. Every day was at least 35c but felt hotter. It was prefect

Ilikemymenlikeilikemycoffee · 25/07/2025 08:50

We go to Mallorca next week and I’m worried it won’t be hot enough!! Am used to hot hot weather on holiday… not that I love it too hot but am also worried about rain!

Interested to read that! We are going to Playa De Muro next Friday and I hope it’s lovely and warm!

TheGrimSmile · 25/07/2025 09:09

I've always avoided southern Europe in July/ Aug - it's far too hot for me.
