Are you changing your holiday plans next year due to heatwave?

Currently in Spain and it’s so hot we have to stay mainly inside during the day. Luckily the hotel has an indoor pool. Are you changing your holiday plans due to the heatwave we see in Southern Europe at the moment or are you ok holidaying in the heat?

LlynTegid · 01/07/2025 18:22

No, but I seldom go abroad in July and never in August.

Hoplolly · 01/07/2025 18:22

No, I love the heat. Off to Turkey in August and can't wait.

3luckystars · 01/07/2025 18:24

We had our holiday already in Ireland this year, no way would I go to Europe in July and August ever. No way not even if it was free.

3WildOnes · 01/07/2025 18:24

I love the heat- so no! We tend to stay out of the sun between 12pm and 4pm anyway..

Picklechicken · 01/07/2025 18:25

We were in Mallorca last week and the heat was unbearable for us, and we usually like the heat! There was no breeze at all and it was just awful. Ds aged 13 ended up with heat exhaustion and vomited non stop for 24 hours (despite doing all the right things, staying in at the hotter times, lots and lots of fluids, sun cream, etc etc). It was just horrid, we obviously stayed in the hotel room when he was unwell. Thankfully after some rest and rehydration sachets he was fine. It’s made us all feel we don’t want to go anywhere hot next year. We’re looking at doing a Fjords cruise instead!

OxfordInkling · 01/07/2025 18:26

Probably not. We usually go away at Easter anyway - though we are doing Greece this summer.

LazySunbedDays · 01/07/2025 18:44

We have just come back from Greece and it was 30+ everyday which was perfect, if it’s getting up to 40° then it does limit the amount of wandering about in the day we can do though.

I have been to the alps and it’s been really hot and too hot to be very active and do the hikes I wanted.

I am from Scandinavia so that’s out too as I know how much it can rain 😉

Scotland or Iceland?

I am from Germany and summer can be a hit and miss. We had 30+ degrees in Berlin last year in August, hot but still ok to do things.

The next week we were in the Bavarian Alps and it was a mix of rain, sun, cloudy with 20-30 degrees.

Baltic Sea or North Sea will be fresher, it depends what you want to do.

No

It is an ‘inconvenient truth’ that global warming is here and having a very real and alarming effect on weather patterns. I’ve been to to Greece most years for 35 years since we have family out there and Greece in July/August now is a different animal to how it was in the 1990s. Last year it was the high 30s low 40s in early July and we spent all our time in wherever was air conditioned and only ventured further afield in the evenings. The heatwaves were combining to one long really hot period, whereas previously you would have some cooler periods breaking it up. Hotter and more uncomfortable holidays are a symptom and real life experience of a wider problem of global warming.

Any ideas for less hot destinations?

Norway and Iceland were lovely last summer.

justtootiredtoday · 02/07/2025 00:49

Possibly. We are going to Turkey next week and I’m getting anxious about the heat.

I usually withstand quite high temperatures fine so will hopefully be ok.

This.

I'm feeling very sad about the whole thing today. Although probably not as sad as the people who live in Southern European countries tbh.

I don't normally shame peoples' individual choices, but the cognitive dissonance of people flying to the Mediterranean and then complaining about the heat brought about by climate breakdown is a tad jarring.

3luckystars · 02/07/2025 10:52

I agree

MinnieMountain · 02/07/2025 11:49

No, because we tend to stick to the alps (like this year) or Pembrokeshire in July and August.

Tadahhh · 01/07/2025 17:16

We are! Going on an expedition ship —-converted car ferry— and I’m really excited, not least that no suncream needed

My DS got sunburn in northern Norway a couple of years ago. Was 26°C. He lives in Finland and they weren't expecting heat.

SueSuddio · 02/07/2025 12:05

Personally I've noticed much hotter temps in mainland Europe for years so we'd always go April / May time instead, and it's still warm enough.

Summer holidays for us are now UK beaches which is what families used to do pre cheap flights era.

Cooler countries would be Scandinavia and by the coast, but it's probably quite expensive as those countries tend to be.

Wolmando · 02/07/2025 12:09

Even years ago we alway went in October half term or the Whit week as summer was too hot, never been in July or August

Northern France, Benelux countries, anywhere round the Baltic, Ireland, UK, Iceland, Faroes. Depends what kind of holiday you want, beach or culture or activities.

gingercat02 · 02/07/2025 12:29

Only because DS will be finished with school next year so we will go back to September holidays as we did before he arrived.
It will be be bliss to have term time holidays again.

dontforgetme · 02/07/2025 12:30

@Falingoth 4 weeks today for us!!

UnctuousUnicorns · 02/07/2025 13:18

We haven't holidayed outside the UK since 2018. Ironically, that was the year many parts of Europe experienced heatwaves. We were fortunate to be staying in Comillas in northern Spain (we took the ferry to Santander), which had temperatures of 23- 24 °C, a sea breeze, rain overnight most days, and a couple of rainy days, so it was very comfortable. I remember watching the news about the heatwaves elsewhere feeling very glad that we weren't there.

We're currently in our touring caravan on a park in West Bay near Bridport harbour in Dorset. The sun's shining, there's a gentle breeze, and the temperature is about 24°C. Suits us just fine.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/07/2025 13:28

It’s a lovely 24 degrees in Copenhagen and when we lived there most of summer was21 to 26 and sunny and blue skys -

cantthinkofausername26 · 02/07/2025 13:33

Went to France last august, it rained and was cold the whole time!

TheGander · 02/07/2025 23:18

Just came back from south of France, was planning to hike but it would have been dangerous. Up to 37C. Changed plans and went to the French Alps which was better but still really quite hot. I would only go to northern Spain in school summer holidays.
