Are you changing your holiday plans next year due to heatwave?

Currently in Spain and it’s so hot we have to stay mainly inside during the day. Luckily the hotel has an indoor pool. Are you changing your holiday plans due to the heatwave we see in Southern Europe at the moment or are you ok holidaying in the heat?

I went to Mallorca in August one year, and Crete in July one year. Weather was fine (I like warm weather) but the crowds were not. So I’ll be sticking to May/June or September for islands in Europe. Best trips for July & August are East Coast road trips. We’re doing Boston & Rhode Island this year; thinking of doing Maine next July.

Just came back from south of France, was planning to hike but it would have been dangerous. Up to 37C. Changed plans and went to the French Alps which was better but still really quite hot. I would only go to northern Spain in school summer holidays.

We had the same in Sardinia a couple of years ago in Sardinia. Totally blew our plans so we ended up doing a lot of snorkelling.

Any ideas for less hot destinations?

Madeira
The Azores
Northern Spain

Probably not. We usually go away at Easter anyway - though we are doing Greece this summer.

Same here. Bit worried about the heat in Greece, but also wildfires, earthquakes and tsunamis. Why did I book it again?!?

garlictwist · 03/07/2025 06:22

I mean, Spain or Turkey in August is always going to be unbearably hot whatever year you go. It's not really a surprise. I would never go there in the summer.

Britneyfan · 03/07/2025 06:22

I changed my holiday plans last summer and this summer because of the increasing heatwaves in the Mediterranean in school summer holidays. I was on a Greek island in 2023 during a very intense heatwave (when the major forest fires happened). Fortunately I was not caught up in any wildfires where I was but the temperatures were approaching 40 degrees, there was little shade/cooling in public areas including restaurants in the hotel I was in and I ended up being very unwell with heat exhaustion which triggered a mental health crisis (I have bipolar disorder).

Since then I decided I was not going back to the Mediterranean in July anymore. I’m gutted because previously my absolute favourite places in the world for a summer holiday have been Greek islands and the south of Italy. And I love sunshine and warm weather. But there is a limit and it’s just too hot there now at that time of year with climate change.

I went to Scotland last summer (that was a step too far it was torrential rain and gale force winds and was absolutely freezing lol though I did actually have a good holiday despite the awful weather!) And this summer I went at the end of June after my son’s exams to the Alps. Unfortunately due to the recent Europe wide heatwave it was way hotter than expected but still generally high 20s/low 30s rather than approaching 40 which makes all the difference.

YellowGrey · 03/07/2025 06:28

I usually like hot weather, but it was 46 degrees when we were in Morocco two years ago and that was awful.

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 03/07/2025 06:33

We went to South of France last year in late July / early Aug and it was too hot for us - we don't like to just lie by the pool and wanted to spend our time exploring and doing fun activities with DD - we could do things in the morning but by lunch it was too hot, DD was just melting so we had to head back and either lie in the shade by the pool or my DD and DH were inside with air con on. We won't be doing it again as just not our bag - I'd rather a bit of rain so we can still be active then these kind of temps.

Kuretake · 03/07/2025 06:35

We made this decision a while ago. I would never book Southern Europe in the summer now.

I love the heat! We were on a western Mediterranean cruise earlier this month, it was well into the 30s and we head to Greece in August. We experienced a heatwave in Corfu in 2023, it was fine as we had a lovely pool.

I was in Greece then
It hit 40 degrees before the end of June!

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 03/07/2025 06:37

Last August my parents generously took us on holiday to Spain and it was too hot for all of us! So I made a decision to only go to Southern Europe (and other hot places) in low or out of season.

I'm currently in the Highlands and the top temperature has been 18°C. Still some humidity but nowhere near as bad as London, where I've come from. So far it's been an excellent holiday.

Clearinguptheclutter · 03/07/2025 06:53

We’ve been cautious ever since being caught up in a heatwave in late June in France in (I think) 2017.
going to Netherlands for 2nd time this August. Won’t go to the med in high summer though we did go to Spain at whit this year and the weather was perfect

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 03/07/2025 06:58

I am coming to the UK and Ireland in August, from Australia. I am deliberately coming then in the hope of at least a little sunshine, and to escape a month of Aussie winter. Around 30 would be nice, I know you have very little air con! I won't hold my breath though.

Radiatorvalves · 03/07/2025 07:06

We like the heat and are going to Turkey this year sailing. We’ve done similar in Greece before and I’m hoping we don’t all melt! Usually we go to the alps and that will continue. Kids no longer at school so we will have more flex on timings next year.

Edited

There is a growing wildfire in Crete at the moment and people are being evacuated. That would be my biggest fear of being stuck on an island with nowhere to go.

socks1107 · 03/07/2025 07:19

We haven't holidayed abroad during summer months in years. I stupidly decided to book Berlin for next week where it’s currently very hot!

itsgettingweird · 03/07/2025 07:20

I’m not going abroad this year and haven’t for a few.

But that isn’t a heat thing.

I spent a very long time living in Tenerife and was pregnant during the summer (ds born in August) so I don’t find the heat so bad.

we just have other commitments during summer that prevents us going away!

HarrietBond · 03/07/2025 07:26

I’m appalling in the heat as is one of my children so we have never gone anywhere traditionally hot in the summer. My in-laws kindly took us on a holiday recently but insisted on Greece so we asked to go in June and even that was too hot. We holiday in Germany and Austria in places where it is generally reasonable weather and only rarely really hot - usually before a lovely big thunderstorm.

Love a baking week so nope

@socks1107 depends what you mean by next week, but next week Mon-Fri it shouldn't be hot at all. Highs of 23 with possible showers. The following week, yep, in the 30s again

Squidgemoon · 03/07/2025 07:34

We love Menorca and have been most summers (July/August) the last few years, it’s never been unbearable, usually around low 30s. Last year we had a day of torrential rain!

Kneenightmare · 03/07/2025 07:46

Hate hate hate the heat! We have just replanned a trip for this time next summer to southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland after seeing its mid thirties there. Instead going to Northern Germany and Holland but still worried about it being too hot. Counting down until DS leaves school and we can take term time holidays.

Lookingforwardto2025 · 03/07/2025 07:49

I think we will only go to southern Europe in May and October half term going forward. I can't do the heat.

Greyrockoff · 03/07/2025 07:53

Yes. Avoid the Med in the summer.
Was in Spain working prior to DC and had a bit of a scare on a train passing a fast moving fire. Went back with young DC and it was like a tinder box. Way too hot for them.
Perfect in Autumn. Sea warm and nice temps on land.

We're off to Florida in 3 weeks 🤣🤣🤣.
At least it'll actually rain there.

We were in Orlando in may and I’ve never known it be so hot there, even the year we went in August!
