Would you travel to the USA?

Setting aside disagreement with Trump’s politics, would you travel to the USA this week (specifically NYC and Washington DC)? My concern lies with the risk of terrorism.

Not a chance.

CarpetKnees · 23/06/2025 18:43

Presumably if it is this weekend, you have everything booked and arranged, and even a good reason for going ? I wouldn't cancel due to a perceived heightened risk of a terrorist attack, no.
However, like many others, I wouldn't travel to the US this year for so many other reasons.

Comedycook · 23/06/2025 18:44

Yes I would

chipsandpeas · 23/06/2025 18:44

id still go

Birdsinginginthetrees · 23/06/2025 18:45

I’m more worried about the threat of terrorism in the uk so no I wouldn’t be worried.

Ineedcoffeenow · 23/06/2025 18:45

We’re flying on Thursday for a combination of work and holiday for 2 weeks. We’ll lose £3,5k if we cancel, (but we’ll stomach it, if we decide not to go.)

Sthoremouse · 23/06/2025 18:45

I would. The risk isn't much different to here in the UK really

MirrorMirror1247 · 23/06/2025 18:46

I'm actually flying to NYC this weekend, and will be in DC at some point next week. I'd be lying I'd I said I wasn't a little concerned, but I've been waiting for this trip for a long time, so I'm still going to go.

Berlinlover · 23/06/2025 18:48

Of course I would. Threads like this drive me insane 🙄

Amy73838 · 23/06/2025 18:48

People on here clearly have a poor grasp of statistics and probabilities.

You are way more likely to die in plane crash on the way there than by a terrorist attack once you arrive.

Pinkpurplepeony · 23/06/2025 18:48

I’ve never had any urge to go to the US, but totally wouldn’t during this presidency. Even if I wanted to I wouldn’t be booking in the current political climate as yes I think high risk of terrorism. But presumably you’ve already paid and can’t cancel now?

Would you only travel to the US when there’s a Democrat president?

That’s elite level craziness!

Ineedcoffeenow · 23/06/2025 18:56

I am erring on the side of going, but I think it’s obvious that the risk of terrorism has increased in the USA. It’s a rapidly changing situation.

It would be a pain to cancel. We would lose £3.5k and it would affect my work. But we can still cancel if we decide it’s too risky.

TimeForTeaAndToast · 23/06/2025 18:58

I'd go.

amylou8 · 23/06/2025 19:00

Of course.
You could die of many things, terrorism is one of the less likely.

Sthoremouse · 23/06/2025 19:00

Just go OP. Enjoy yourself!

Why? Lots of people giving the USA a swerve whilst Trump is in charge

Honestly your poor grasp of probability is causing you unnecessary concerns.

You are literally more likely to die taking a bath while you are in the US than you are to be the victim of terrorism.

Just because something is on the news every day doesn’t mean it is anywhere near as prevalent as it appears.

If people didn’t have access to the internet or TV and based their views on what they actually experienced then concerns would be far more balanced and rational.

They’re really not. In the same way that I doubt many people cancel their visit to the UK while Labour are in government.

Holluschickie · 23/06/2025 19:07

I wouldnt because I am not white. Not cos of terrorism.
I don't really enjoy the US anyway.

Favouritefruits · 23/06/2025 19:08

Everything will be on high alert and people being more cautious than ever. Probably safer to fly now than two weeks ago.

Ineedcoffeenow · 23/06/2025 19:09

OK, I have to respond to those who say they won’t travel to the USA because of Trump. I spend a lot of time over there for work. There are many wonderful people who are horrified at what’s happening in their country. Look at all the people who are standing up to ICE and speaking their minds, despite measures to restrict freedom of speech and criminalise peaceful protest. America has a tremendous history of people who stood up for human rights. I think that a visit to the USA is supporting those people more than Trump.

I'd still go, it wouldn't occur to me to change my plans due to the situation in the Middle East.

Doesn't matter to me if a US President is Democrat or Republican.

Does* matter to me if the President is a sane, intelligent person who understands he is restricted by the constitution, or the buffoon that is currently in the White House.
