We live in Zone 1 so thought we are used to expensive prices. Where have you been that you thought “ouch! that’s expensive.”

For us it has to be Mykonos and Ibiza, total rip offs. We didn’t find New York too bad and thought Barbados was okay too.

Costa Rica was up there with Copenhagen for us and worse because I'd been before and prices had shot up since then.

Yes I was going to say Costa Rica. Lodging was reasonable as we avoided the US 5 star hotel spring magnets and food was fine once we stuck to the local restaurants ( sodas)

Entrance fees were ludicrously high for even things like walking around a small nature trail. Any time we had to get a taxi they never put on the meter and just charged us a random and extortionate number of colones. Wine was particularly expensive, I was kicking DH under the table when he ordered a second glass in the fancy schmancy place we stupidly went to. Still worth visiting though as the high prices do mean high standards and it all feels safe in the tourist areas.

mind you still not as bad as the 26 euro aperol spritzes in Venice - this was a good 10 years ago so doubtless more now. Included was 6 euros towards the orchestra that promptly went on a break when we arrived, never to return. DH suggested we have a second drink there .

Norway, and the San Francisco Bay area.

DameDoggieDoo · 09/05/2025 08:25

Disneyland Paris. The most unbelievably dire food for €€€.
Not been to Disney anywhere else so can't say if it's Disney everywhere or just France.

AngelinaFibres · 09/05/2025 08:27

Alnwick Castle. Absolute rip off.

Changingplace · 09/05/2025 08:30

Vegas was absolutely insane, $9 for a small bottle of soft drink, and ridiculous ‘resort fees’ on top of hotel room costs, plus all the expected tipping, it was madness.

Dalaman airport. 13 years ago...I had to tell the kids to put the Fruit Shoots back when we got to the til and I think they were like a fiver each! The fast food prices were crazy...we went hungry that day 😄

Came here to say this too. After getting used to prices in the area Dalaman airport was a shock. Even airport staff were embarrassed.

InsolentAnnie · 09/05/2025 08:31

Luxembourg. A punnet of strawberries was about £6!

aintnospringchicken · 09/05/2025 08:33

Switzerland

Notgoingtohappen · 09/05/2025 08:33

The O2! Prices in there are exorbitant and totally unjustifiable

I visit my son in Switzerland - it's expensive.

A glass of wine is around £8-10 for 100mls... yes 100mls 😱 that's about two gulps!

Yeah, Switzerland is ‘close your eyes and hand over the card’ territory for sure. I got seriously stung by the prince per 100 mls on my first wine, DH and I had cocktails in a bar with accompanying bill that we still don’t talk about, and the worst was something north of £100 for two pizzas and two beers.

Fearfulsaints · 09/05/2025 08:34

The school summer fair. More expensive than Disney.

Westun · 09/05/2025 08:36

Zúrich! Went for the Christmas markets and every thing was so expensive! Barbados food can be expensive as they import a lot. Bilund, Denmark - food was expensive in places but I thought the quality was good so it felt justified.

Dublin in 1988.

Germany 1923

Doggymummar · 09/05/2025 08:38

Hmm, the Grand in Brighton £18 for a gin and tonic £13 for a glass of house white. Abroad I've not really noticed, I went to Seychelles in a five star and my friend couldn't afford to eat out so we lived on cup noodles and in Guadeloupe the hotel restaurant was 110 euros pppn so went into town or ate panini from the local shop, this was just isolated places tho.

Twelve dollars in Soho new York last week in the supermarket

BethDuttonYeHaw · 09/05/2025 08:40

London and New York

Gymmum82 · 09/05/2025 08:43

I found Tokyo and Disneyland Paris very expensive. Tokyo was £9 for half a pint. Disney £60 for the equivalent of 4 McDonald’s meals.
Didnt find New York or Reykjavik that bad

Whiteflowerscreed · 09/05/2025 08:44

Probably Switzerland

getahhtmapub · 09/05/2025 08:45

St Tropez. €45 for basic tomato spaghetti.

Anywhere Scandinavian. I remember two plates of pasta and two wines came to well over £120 in Stockholm in a basic pizza/pasta place 10 years ago!

twilightermummy · 09/05/2025 08:47

Dublin.
Turkey the other year was expensive. Meals were on a par with the UK. The staff were blaming their government and inflation. It was cheap to fly out there but everything else had been hiked up. It's not a cheap sunny destination anymore. I'll still visit though as it's beautiful and the people are really welcoming.

I'd come to post the same thing. I went there with my husband when I was pregnant with our first baby and he thought my blood pressure would be at risk when he saw how much a bottle of water was. And there were no cold water taps anywhere in the airport never mind a drinking fountain. someone had bought their kids a McDonald's which the child then dropped the bag and spilled everything and I thought the dad was going to cry as it was about £18, this was in 2013!

MaloryJones · 09/05/2025 08:56

ABBA Voyage
It was a wonderful, jaw dropping show it must be said

It was the price of merch mainly (I only bought a pen) and the prices in the bar (but to be expected) . V Expensive for my family . I paid nothing as it was a big treat for my 60th, but the drinks were dear.
