We live in Zone 1 so thought we are used to expensive prices. Where have you been that you thought “ouch! that’s expensive.”

For us it has to be Mykonos and Ibiza, total rip offs. We didn’t find New York too bad and thought Barbados was okay too.

Iceland and Switzerland. Going to Lichtenstein this year and hoping it’s not as bad…

MotherWol · 09/05/2025 07:58

I visited Geneva for work last year and that stood out as expensive, a coffee and croissant in Starbucks was around £9! Copenhagen didn’t seem that much more costly than London for most things, and public transport and museum entry was pretty good value, it was just eating out that was around 30% more expensive.

VirgosNeedGoals · 09/05/2025 08:01

Dublin. I wouldn't mind but to add insult to injury it's so fucking boring!

Berlinlover · 09/05/2025 08:02

Tromso in Norway was extremely expensive. I don’t drink alcohol but still found it a very expensive holiday.

PilotFish · 09/05/2025 08:03

Lake Bled.

The rest of the country is cheap (and beautiful) but the bars/resturants/shops round Lake Bled made Iceland the country seem like ICeland the shop in comparason.

About 25+ years ago I bought a plate of chips at a Swiss motorway service station.
It cost £7!!!! I'm still in shock.

Dalaman airport. 13 years ago...I had to tell the kids to put the Fruit Shoots back when we got to the til and I think they were like a fiver each! The fast food prices were crazy...we went hungry that day 😄

TizerorFizz · 09/05/2025 08:03

In Geneva there are cheaper areas - around the university! DD was there for 5 months! The suburbs are not so bad either - her university accommodation had a couple of restaurants nearby that were not to bad and absolutely no tipping! The restaurant owner made it clear it’s not done in Switzerland. It’s more expensive than Iceland though.

LAS VEGAS was expensive for food and drink. Those "buffets" are a total rip off, one was $100 pp, !

I’m not Dublin’s biggest fan as in recent years it has got rough but it’s certainly not boring.

Bibbitybobbitybo · 09/05/2025 08:04

Costa Rica was up there with Copenhagen for us and worse because I'd been before and prices had shot up since then.

MagellanicPenguin · 09/05/2025 08:07

Norway

Couchtattie · 09/05/2025 08:08

Iceland. London. Niagara Falls.

What did you expect ?

New York or Walt disney world florida. Paying $20-35 for a sandwich (even a really nice massive one) was no joke when we were at dollar-pound parity. We went for 1 coffee, 1 orange juice and a massive slice of cheesecake to share at juniors in brooklyn (divine btw, highly recommend) and it was $25 and the server practically cried and had a go at us because she thought we hadn't tipped and we'd tipped 20%!!!

I think it depends on when you go. Years ago America was great, really cheap, especially for shopping for designer US brands. It was hideous a few years ago but has improved since the dollar started to slide.

I remember feeling completely ripped off in Dalman airport for a macdonalds. Cyprus airport I was fed up of paying paying paying and threw my last 5 euro at the costa and stomped on the plane with my coffee.

Airports generally are the worst for ripping people off.

I was quite surprised by prices in Dublin this year and I live in Switzerland!

notacooldad · 09/05/2025 08:11

Istanbul and Chamonix are quite expensive. However it doesn't stop me going repeatedly as I love those places.

Gothenburg wasn't as dear as I expected, or perhaps I expected it to be really really expensive and it was just expensive!

I actually thought Florida was really cheap especially Disney, went 2 years ago and couldn’t spend all my money 🤣

ChimneyPot · 09/05/2025 08:15

Tokyo and recently New York.
I travel to NY fairly frequently for family reasons eating out and even groceries are really increasing in price.

Gowlett · 09/05/2025 08:16

A few well-established restaurants have closed down in Dublin. Tourists are keeping the place afloat. Even though you see young people out enjoying themselves, they buy Matcha Lattes, a slice of pizza maybe. The shops, I don’t know how some of the UK high street chains are still going… The mark-up from Sterling to Euro is shocking! It’s quite unfair.

NewsdeskJC · 09/05/2025 08:16

Denmark

Octavia64 · 09/05/2025 08:17

Verbier

switzerland

Dopeyandgrumpy · 09/05/2025 08:19

I didn’t find Copenhagen or Zurich expensive. I thought similar or even less than London. Hotels in London are extortionate and meals are as well.

I think the places that are a lot are usually those tourist places like the OP mentioned where you just feel like being ripped off. The US is also pricey too!!

Netcam · 09/05/2025 08:21

Norway, but it was beautiful and so glad we did it.

Shetlands · 09/05/2025 08:22

Geneva and Copenhagen.
