We live in Zone 1 so thought we are used to expensive prices. Where have you been that you thought “ouch! that’s expensive.”

For us it has to be Mykonos and Ibiza, total rip offs. We didn’t find New York too bad and thought Barbados was okay too.

We paid 35 euros for 8 hours parking by in Lake Bled.

In Switzerland a few years ago, I opted to pay in GBP and the shop assistant was shocked at the exchange rate.

In Hong Kong & Macau, accommodation is insane.

We are going to Iceland in the summer and our average hotel (not including breakfast ) for 4 is £400 per night. I think we will bring snacks! 😂

Coffeeishot · 09/05/2025 12:40

My friend went to Iceland for a mini break ate hotel breakfast and subway. She didn't know how expensive it be.

Sydney in Australia

ViciousCurrentBun · 09/05/2025 12:56

@Badbadbunny we went to Kenya on honeymoon and went on the local bus as it was about 20 pence each instead of £20 each there was a slight feeling that you could be killed because the bus was shit or murdered because we stood out like sore thumbs. But the live chickens and the driver telling us not to sit by the windows as we would be mugged through them did add a certain something.

Iceland. I had a sandwich for £15.

Tokyo was always said to be expensive but people we know went to bars and had expensive drinks. Cafes and restaurants in the department stores are good value. There’s definitely value there if you look.

We've been having ramen for lunch for £4 or so each, Vietnamese spring rolls, 2 x banh mi and a beer and soft drink for £15, and an amazing Vietnamese dinner, starter, 3 mains and 4 beers for £34. Bargainous. Onigiri for £1-2, yakitori for £1-2. We were so surprised at how cheap eating out here is.

Sidge · 09/05/2025 13:33

Iceland. I knew it would be expensive but it was worth it. Food was great.

Las Vegas. OMG again I knew it would be pricey but wow. Factor in resort fees, taxes and tipping and it was mad. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room, so 2 coffees and a pastry in the lobby was about $25-30. And they ask you to add a tip even just buying a takeaway coffee!! Bought some fruit in a supermarket off Strip and it was about $8 for a small pot of grapes.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 09/05/2025 13:45

I don't think I've ever felt genuinely ripped off anywhere if I factor in paying for an experience I couldn't get anywhere else. I haven't visited Scandinavia yet though, I'm prepared to be flabbergasted when I do.

Iceland and Switzerland. Going to Lichtenstein this year and hoping it’s not as bad…

Sadly, it is. The problem is that the Swiss franc is about 100% overvalued, and that's the currency in FL as well.

That's really good to know, thank you. I really want to go for the museums - the pictures I've seen are just my sort of thing. Do you have any recommendations for other things I should do or see while I'm there?

Are you travelling alone or with kids?

We went with our 2 kids 14&10 so had to mix it up a bit to keep everyone happy lol.

We were only there for 3 days, Nyhavn a must-so pretty and you can take a lovely canal cruise there too. Was in December when we went so was ice skating as well.
As we were there near Christmas time, Tivoli gardens was really beautiful.
We managed to fit in The Round Tower (can’t remember the Danish name!) short and sweet but quite a pretty view from the top.
Amalienborg (could be spelt wrong) palace and Rosenburg- even kids were impressed with the Danish Crown Jewels.

People told us not to bother but we still went to see the Little Mermaid statue- it is crap 😂

Also Viking museum and museum of illusions for the kids.

Honestly don’t get the hate for Copenhagen - one of my faves - such a cool city and pleasant vibe to it.
Would go again in a heartbeat.

*christiansborg as well

MotherWol · 09/05/2025 14:17

@StellaAndCrow I was in Copenhagen last month, and loved it! The National Museum of Denmark is about £14, kids go free, and that includes the current Viking exhibition which was amazing. DD (9) loved the children’s museum and we could honestly have spent all day there.

Tivoli gardens was about £70 for me and DD but that included all rides and we didn’t have any other costs while we were in there.

TizerorFizz · 09/05/2025 14:24

@StellaAndCrow Are you going with dc or adults? Dc slightly changes things but it’s still a very good city for relaxing and seeing different things.

Same, it was a shock.

Same, it was a shock.

Beer was £30 a bottle in one place I went to. It was ridiculous.

Blueflowerpower · 09/05/2025 14:35

Iceland - I think we spent around £3.5k in seven days. This was after flights, accommodation and car hire were already paid for. We had an amazing time, but everything was steep!

wishIwasonholiday10 · 09/05/2025 14:40

Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Iceland and Norway.

Generally in Iceland there seemed to be a smaller gap in price between cheap and expensive food (so the lower end was more inflated) and the higher end food was usually excellent so didn’t feel like too much of a rip off. Accommodation was also very expensive.

WinterOnItsWayOut · 09/05/2025 15:15

I went to Stockholm with Dd last year and our central hotel room was €85 a night and we had some fab meals for well under €100 with drinks.

A 500ml beer was around £7.50 in the hotel and c£8 on the waterfront. I didn’t think it was too bad tbh!

hopeishere · 09/05/2025 16:56

New York the tipping adds up when you’re eating out all the time.

£14 for a glass of rose in Oslo!!

LittleBitofBread · 09/05/2025 17:04

TizerorFizz · 09/05/2025 11:56

If you mostly went to supermarkets, that’s not eating out. Most places are cheap enough in supermarkets but when living in Geneva, DD did supermarket shopping in France! As did all the students. As I said, the best bit is no tipping and that means Switzerland is better in some respects - but jolly expensive up mountains.

Not sure of your point here; am I misunderstanding you? The thread isn't just about the price of eating out, it's about costs in general.

schnubbins · 09/05/2025 17:12

Hawaii .One glass of white wine $20 and that was over 5 years ago.
