Best food you ever had on holiday?

Been thinking about how food can be such a big part of holidays and curious to know what food experiences on holiday you have all had?

For me, a proper new york pizza from Prince Street Pizza was incredible.

I had a cajun jambalaya pasta dish in New Orleans which was out of this world.

A clam chowder in Boston away from the tourist area on Newbury Street.

A freshly made chicken club sandwich with egg bacon tomato and the crispiest saltiest french fries for lunch in Ibiza after quite a lot of uninspiring all inclusive food.

Crispy flaky cod and salty chips from New Quay Wales

Prawns in chilli and garlic oil before a perfectly cooked filled steak at Chill Out Restaurant in Tenerife overlooking the sea.

Really good steamed mussels in a little pub in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

I visited Urth Cafe in Laguna Beach and had a delicious mint chocolate mocha while watching all these super tanned super fit rich people grabbing their morning coffee and it was so fun.

I know sometimes it's all about the location but what food has genuinely been so tasty on your holidays? Love to hear them

Starter: Chicken and bacon salad at a wedding in Ireland.

Main: Caesar salad, steak and a jacket potato on a boat in Mexico.

Dessert: Poffertjes in Rotterdam.

Evidently, I like simple food!

Irish stew at a pub in Ireland, stew is an absolute favourite of mine and this was perfection.

Buffalo wings just about anywhere in the Niagara Falls/Buffalo area of NY State.

I still think about a carrot and ginger salad I had in Belize 6 years ago!
Tofu amok in Cambodia, I had it at a tiny (and cheap!) place and it was the best thing I ate in a month backpacking SE Asia
I actually had a fantastic green gazpacho in France recently as well - previously not a lover of cold soups but this was so flavourful

@Itsdare secon the best fish and chips from New Quay in Wales from the shop near the harbour. I had freshly caught sole. It was utterly lush. A wood fired pizza in the Alps. Many lovely meals over the years.

Beautiful fish with fruit ontop ( half an apricot, black grapes etc) in a waterfront restaurant in Capetown - sounds odd but tasted delicious.
Tuna cooked very simply in a restaurant overlooking the sea in Menorca.
Fried swordfish in Majorca
Best pizza ever ( a simple Margherita) in a little bar on a busy roundabout in Florence
Greek salad on Crete ( never tasted the same at home)
Scampi & chips in Tenby - homemade & the best I have ever eaten!
Some of the best Chinese food I’ve had was in California ( no msg)
Warm soda bread in Southern Ireland
Hot chocolate in France

Paella in a little restaurant upstairs at the back of the Boqueria market in Barcelona.

Barbecued chicken in a "Uruguayan BBQ" restaurant in Panajachel, Guatemala.

Roasted sardines in a beach bar in Estepona, Spain

Cheese enchiladas in a restaurant called El Sombrero in Juneau, Alaska. I still dream of those enchiladas. I don't know what magic they performed on them but they were wonderful. I had a chimichanga another time which was also great.

Although I didn't have a bad meal over there at all (I was in Juneau for the whole trip). In different places I had a Philly cheesesteak sandwich, a buffalo burger, the most amazing hash browns alongside Eggs Benedict for breakfast, biscuits and gravy, fried clams, other enchiladas (meat ones but they weren't anywhere near as good as the cheese ones) and a gorgeous Thai green curry. Even the McGriddle from McDonalds was fun since we don't get that here.

I just wish I had tried the crab legs in the amazing seafood restaurant there, but you bought them by the bucket and I don't think I could have had a whole bucket by myself as the friends I was with wouldn't have had them. They were absolutely massive!

Tarkan · 18/09/2024 18:59

Oh I forgot the katsu chicken I had there as well.

I also don't know if it counts as a holiday as I was there for a wedding the next day but I also still dream about a berry soufflé I had at the Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh. Absolute perfection.

Newlyn sardine starter in pub in Marazion a few years back. It’s changed hands now and isn’t so good.

On my most recent Cornwall trip I had Gurnard at Sam’s Fowey. Amazing.

In New York, breakfast places we have been are often very good - I liked the juice and the breakfast potatoes at Fairway.

Patsy’s Pizzeria in New York is fab.

Guinea fowl at The Old Fire Engine House in Ely.

cannelloni in sorrento

Seafood platter in Palma. I was there with my Mother and we saw a lot of locals going through a door in a non descript building in the harbour. We followed them upstairs into an enormous dining room where the waiters were carrying huge platters overhead. It was a fabulous feast.

Diplidocus4 · 18/09/2024 19:58

@Itsdare @Pippatpip possibly the Lime Crab ? ! Also think it's amazing!

Pippatpip · 18/09/2024 19:59

@Diplidocus4 Yes, think it was that. Had a blue sign. Best ever!

A bowl of langoustines in Stornoway, it was 25 years ago but I remember how delicious they were.

lightsandtunnels · 18/09/2024 20:08

Grilled octopus in a traditional Canarian restaurant in Puerto del Carmen old town.
Anything and everything at Olive Garden in Times Square NY.
Pig plate (pork done 4 ways) in a wonderful hotel in Dorset.
Tapas in a seafront restaurant in Palma.
Tiny frozen balls of ice cream served in a pot from a dessert hut in a Philadelphia suburb.
Breakfast on the boardwalk at Jersey Shore (French toast with the crispiest bacon ever, Maple syrup and icing sugar)
Donuts in Toronto.
Dirty fries at Cowes week on the Isle of Wight.

A crispy skinned spit roast chicken eaten out of a paper bag on a beach wall In Spain, washed down with ice cold lager.

Garlicky langoustine straight off a bbq at a beach bar...also in Spain!

Braised pork cheeks at a tapas bar in Seville....

Hot fresh sugary churros with thick hot chocolate outside a cafe in Malaga.

There's a theme emerging here! I've travelled all over but clearly most of my memorable food experiences have been in Spain.

ScrambledSmegs · 18/09/2024 20:08

Wild strawberry sorbet at the Corfu Sailing Club restaurant. Actually everything we ate there was delicious, but that was just stunning. It sounds really swanky but it wasn't, just a really lovely relaxed place to eat.

Ah the Lime crab - I've had their fish n chips sat on a bench by the beach. Delicious 😋

A prawn curry served in a pineapple shell in a plantation house restaurant in Mauritius.
A lobster spaghetti and home made ice cream in a restaurant down a ropey looking back alley in Cape Verde.
Swordfish from a shack in a carpark in Barbados, served with the best coleslaw I have ever eaten.

I think I may have been to the same side alley in Cape Verde! Had the most incredible steak and the restaurant itself was actually very pretty.

Blueberrycreampie · 18/09/2024 20:32

A wonderful scampi risotto many years ago in Florence. Wish I could remember where but probably changed now anyway.

Seriously79 · 18/09/2024 20:38

A restaurant in Palm Springs about 20 years ago. I wish I could remember what it was called.

CheerfulBunny · 18/09/2024 20:41

Breakfast in the morning sunshine of Greek yoghurt, honey and fresh melon overlooking a turtle beach on a Greek island. The yoghurt was so thick and creamy it stood up in scoops like ice cream. There were bees and flowers everywhere in the little shack cafe and the lovely owner asked us to help him write the blackboard menu. If I close my eyes I can go there now..

RobinEllacotStrike · 18/09/2024 20:45

Steak & martinis in New York
Crab shack crabs al fresco in Turkey
Anything in Thailand.

Satay in Singapore
Baguette in France.
