Best food you ever had on holiday?

Been thinking about how food can be such a big part of holidays and curious to know what food experiences on holiday you have all had?

For me, a proper new york pizza from Prince Street Pizza was incredible.

I had a cajun jambalaya pasta dish in New Orleans which was out of this world.

A clam chowder in Boston away from the tourist area on Newbury Street.

A freshly made chicken club sandwich with egg bacon tomato and the crispiest saltiest french fries for lunch in Ibiza after quite a lot of uninspiring all inclusive food.

Crispy flaky cod and salty chips from New Quay Wales

Prawns in chilli and garlic oil before a perfectly cooked filled steak at Chill Out Restaurant in Tenerife overlooking the sea.

Really good steamed mussels in a little pub in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

I visited Urth Cafe in Laguna Beach and had a delicious mint chocolate mocha while watching all these super tanned super fit rich people grabbing their morning coffee and it was so fun.

I know sometimes it's all about the location but what food has genuinely been so tasty on your holidays? Love to hear them

Fish n chips Watson’s Bay Sydney

A bowl of moules and a carafe of rosé overlooking the site where DH and DC were playing golf. Heaven.

Feta in filo frizzled with honey, on my favourite beach side taverna in Crete.

I am wondering if we ate at the same place? Elounda end?

Chickdaft · 18/09/2024 21:12

Surf and turf in blue heaven, key west. The crab claws were divine.
Pad Thai cooked fresh on the street in Bangkok.
I was not a fan of tomatoes until I tasted ‘proper’ ones in Turkey, that was a revelation, gorgeous with salad and swordfish.
Chowder in the outer Hebrides at Uig sands.
Moules marniere (sp) in Jersey Channel Islands……loved this and never forgot my first taste of this dish.

ButteryNuts · 18/09/2024 22:07

La Bodega in Cala Dor, went back twice in our week there.

Incredible baby squid 🦑. Taormina plastic chairs, watching bats flit around the belfry.

SquashPenguin · 18/09/2024 23:24

Käsespaetzle in a restaurant in Berlin. I go to the same one every time I visit. I'm hungry thinking about it now!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 18/09/2024 23:52

The first pizza I ever had, in a beach cafe on the coast in South of France, thin, crispy and divine.
I was 12, so 60 years ago.

All the food served on a houseboat in Srinigar, Kashmir, no choice, all cooked by the male host.

Jerk pork from a pit at a roadside shack in Jamaica, and I don't really like pork but omg melting and the taste.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 18/09/2024 23:56

Funny isn't it, my dad was a bit of a food snob and took us to some amazing gastronomical places, which I remember, but I don't remember the food.

Aplaceinthecold · 19/09/2024 00:17

A simple chicken salad with olive oil and vinegar in Majorca.
Best pizza ever in Amalfi and best pistachio ice cream in Sorrento.
A perfect fillet steak in Naples.
In a small restaurant in Corfu, almost everything.
Fried liver, stuffed vine leaves, saganaki and Greek salad.

Carouselfish · 19/09/2024 00:43

A dish called Kovuta Tofu at The Lazy Turtle in Aruba. African inspired I think. Amazing taste.

MoonKiss · 19/09/2024 00:48

Either the nine course tasting menu at Raffles in Singapore.

Or the 5 euro margarita pizza from a tin pot cafe near Naples.

BigBarm · 19/09/2024 08:14

I still often think about the deep fried artichokes with a siracha dip in west Texas - crispy, creamy, spicy, salty deliciousness!

Aubergine salad in Crete - coal roasted aubergine and red pepper, all smoky and garlicky. Also in Crete, a gorgeous potato, courgette, cheese and mint pie. (We ate a LOT of good food in Crete - need to go back - I am veggie but DH had some phenomenal meat dishes there).

A tofu laksa in a Sydney shopping mall - perfectly balanced flavours and better than I’ve eaten in Asia.

And a weird dish in New Mexico - guacamole shaped into a ring donut shape, coated in panko breadcrumbs and deep fried. (Not sure how they made this without it becoming a big mess!). It sounds revolting but it was delightful!

In market d’olivar in palma, buying seafood and fish for our beach bbq - always the highlight of our time.
we love visiting the women on their stalls and choosing from the wonderful displays
Before stopping for a cheeky cava.

there was a little kiosk with some chefs cooking exciting stuff .
ended up inadvertently spending 100€
on bar snacks.
the most delectable bar snacks.
the chef cooks. And you eat what he makes.

didnt go there looking for it, but knew we had come across a place of note.

A bowl of buttered Jersey Royals in Jersey. Was 25 years ago and DH and I still talk about them!

They were an accompaniment to Lobster Thermador but tbh we could have just eaten the potatoes.

We have always wondered if the people of Jersey keep the best for themselves as we've never had any that tasted so good.

Netcam · 19/09/2024 09:02

I still remember an amazing 3 course meal at Inn Buffalito in Sorrento, probably about 12 years ago when DS were young.

Some amazing Arctic Char with new potatoes, honey and almonds at Messinn in Reykjavik about 7 years ago.

And an incredible buffet dinner with the most amazing fillet steak at the Fretheim hotel in Flam, Norway, a one night splurge as part of a nearly 3 week train trip around Norway about 6 years ago.

Other than that, cooking veggie burgers outside on the griddle on a warm summer evening when we go away in our micro caravan is always memorable.

bettytaghetti · 19/09/2024 10:57

Thanks for making me hungry Op!
For me it's the cheese course at Hostellerie de Levernois just outside Beaune - it's epic! It takes 2 people to carry the enormous tray (& that's been whittled down; it used to be 2 trays, one with just cow's milk cheese, the other with sheep & goat's milk) 🤤
All the other food there is delicious too but the waiter who serves the cheese describes each one and where exactly each little farm it's from in such a beautifully poetic way (with a lovely French accent to boot! 😁), it makes it such a highlight of a wonderful stay!

Vietnam, all of it. From Banh Mi at a street stall to Pho for breakfast at the hotel.

GettingStuffed · 19/09/2024 20:57

I don't think I can name just one we've had fine dining in the Carribbean down to amazing burgers.

TheGander · 19/09/2024 21:47

Vietnam too, I particularly remember a steamed fish with ginger and a citrus sauce. And a 1 dollar meal eaten by the roadside in Saigon, as many spring rolls as you could eat, washed down by beer that seems to only taste that good in south east Asia.
Apple sorbet in a strawberry soup at the Porthminster cafe in St Ives.
A lovely fish soup at The Place ( now Gallivant) at Camber
Sone of the best food I’ve had has been French , but not necessarily in France or in a restaurant- my gran was French and a great cook.

Parky04 · 19/09/2024 21:49

A lasagne in Dubrovnik. Best I have ever tasted.

Mooche · 20/09/2024 02:35

This thread is great, but making me hungry. We should have a thread for uk as well so we can go and try the food Grin

Mine are :

An Indian restaurant in Iceland. Everything I had was insanely good, surprisingly too. Really hidden restaurant. Every dish we had was so nice. I don't think I've had Indian food as good anywhere else

The best steak tartare in a beach restaurant in south of France

The most amazing grilled lobster with garlic butter in Dominican Republic restaurant on Xmas eve

Not quite an actual meal but I fell in love with butter popcorn in USA (New Jersey) at the cinema. It was the best popcorn I've had. Very unhealthy though! Also same trip I fell in love with American fudge, it's very different to Uk fudge and it was all delicious esp Rocky Road.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 20/09/2024 02:50

Simple Greek salad with bread in Corfu.
Sabrett hot dog from a stand in New York.
Best pizza ever was in New York too, but I can’t remember the name of the restaurant. I just recall it was margarita and had more oregano than we get over here in the UK. As standard on a pizza, I mean.

Could currently eat all of the above.

sashh · 20/09/2024 06:18

Fish and chips on the North Yorkshire coast - ate from a different place each day.

When I was about 14/15 we were on holiday in Italy. We went into a restaurant and they got a customer who spoke English to tell us that the chef didn't get many British visitors so would we try all the 'hors d'oeuvres' .

We ended up eating about 10 starters before we had the food we ordered.

Another time on holiday in France a bit younger and we stayed at a little auberge and when we went down for dinner it was a 5 course meal. I had duck, it came in a small pot with a black pepper sauce.

This is when I discovered not all pepper is white and that I disliked white pepper not all pepper.

Grilled fish on the beach in Bali.

Rougaille and roti in Mauritius.

Parrilla in Argentina, I mostly ate steak but did have the odd bit of chicken.
