Edinburgh weekend break

EBWhite · 01/09/2024 15:31

Travelling in term time for a weekend with 2 friends. The cost of accommodation is astronomical. Is there something I’ve missed or will we have to suck up paying a couple of hundred each for basic (premier inn) accommodation? Can anyone suggest somewhere beyond going to a hostel or staying way out of the city please? All ideas appreciated!

I've found the same, I am going by myself in a couple of months. I have booked a room in this hostel https://www.castlerockedinburgh.com/prices/

It has triple rooms if you are happy to share and is very central.

We offer quality accommodation at affordable prices. You can choose from private/double, triple and quad rooms as well as shared dorms.

Edinburgh is ridiculously expensive. No idea why as it's not a place I'd ever choose to visit

BashfulClam · 01/09/2024 15:40

Is it Scottish term time though as that varies? E.g They were back after Summer 2 weeks ago. Although I have noticed the prices in Edinburgh are mad nowadays. I try to get hotels at Edinburgh Park or the Airport as can park for free and jump on a train/tram to the city.

Really? You've no idea why anyone would want to visit Edinburgh? Are you generally so lacking in imagination?

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 01/09/2024 15:43

Are you looking for a triple room, or three separate rooms?

EBWhite · 01/09/2024 15:55

Triple, or a double and single. I don’t think we’d get 3 singles but if we could
for a decent price we would

You can get 2 rooms for 3 nights at the Leonardo Murrayfield for a weekend next month for £630. £210pp for three nights is not what I’d call astronomical, what were you hoping to pay pppn?

RaraRachael · 01/09/2024 16:28

I have visited Edinburgh many times thank you - the last time only 2 weeks ago. I said it's not a place I would choose to visit.

Just don't like the place.

You can’t imagine why people want to visit the capital of Scotland? Reallly? 🙄

We don't want ya anyway 🤪

laesosalt · 01/09/2024 16:35

Maybe see if you get an Itison voucher (although some hotels might be a bit iffy with it being used during term time). Worth a shot though!

RaraRachael · 01/09/2024 16:36

Don't worry. I won't be visiting again. I've visited all the touristy places.

Each to their own.

Florafleur · 01/09/2024 16:41

It is usually the Saturday night that is the most expensive, could you go Sunday/ Monday for instance?

Other option is to stay further out. We often stay in Leith and get the bus in. Further with trains Livingston?

Edinburgh is a fabulous city 😂

februaryfilly · 01/09/2024 16:46

Book hotel in leith Edinburgh or morningside , Edinburgh is a relatively small city with great bus / trams so easy to reach city centre try Airbnb.

Pippifer · 01/09/2024 16:47

As much as I hate Airbnb, you’d prob be better to get one if it’s three of you for a few days.

Heatherbell1978 · 01/09/2024 16:48

Edinburgh is a pretty small compact city with a decent bus, tram and train. Yes if you're looking to stay on Princes St with a castle view you'll pay for it. Or you could do a 10 min tram ride from Leith. Or a slightly longer bus journey. I live a 20 min train from the centre and the local Premier Inn would be around £70 a night I guess.

aintnospringchicken · 01/09/2024 16:49

There's a Premier Inn in Newcraighall ( probably cheaper than a city centre one)which is opposite a train station . The train would get you into the city centre in 10 minutes.

RaraRachael · 01/09/2024 16:50

@steadywinner I've obviously missed something. What's so fabulous about it?

I was going to suggest this in my post! Right next to a train station.

Your mistake was visiting during the Edinburgh Festival then. I don't even set foot in the city in August. The population increased ten fold.

LlynTegid · 01/09/2024 16:54

Look at Leith (as suggested) or a couple of tram stops from the airport. Tram runs all evening so you can still get back easily.

RaraRachael · 01/09/2024 17:04

Yes @Heatherbell1978 it was extremely busy then but I've been at all different times.
I just don't get the love for it but I'm not interested in dining and drinking so that's maybe part of the attraction.

TheLocust · 01/09/2024 17:08

You sound like a bundle of fun @RaraRachael
