Edinburgh weekend break

EBWhite · 01/09/2024 15:31

Travelling in term time for a weekend with 2 friends. The cost of accommodation is astronomical. Is there something I’ve missed or will we have to suck up paying a couple of hundred each for basic (premier inn) accommodation? Can anyone suggest somewhere beyond going to a hostel or staying way out of the city please? All ideas appreciated!

@TheLocust Just cos I don't like Edinburgh?

As I said upthread - Each to their own.
Edinburgh isn't for me.

No, not because you don't like Edinburgh. But because you appear to be one of those people who purposely seek out threads you're not really interested in just so you can piss on someone else's chips.

Yes @Heatherbell1978 it was extremely busy then but I've been at all different times.
I just don't get the love for it but I'm not interested in dining and drinking so that's maybe part of the attraction.

Have you climbed to the top of Arthur’s seat on a sunny day and looked around 360 degrees….that just made me glad to be alive
Have you walked around the beautiful Deans Village
Have you eaten an icecream on Portobello Beach
Have you enjoyed Scottish porridge with multiple toppings at one of the independant cafes
i can’t believe you’ve been to Edinburgh all the times you say you have and done these things and not enjoyed them?

I haven’t been this year but after reading this thread I’m going to book for Autumn 😊
( last time we went was last March 2023….took my eldest GD to see Annie with Paul O’Grady…..then he died the next day 😢)

bringincrazyback · 01/09/2024 17:20

OP it might be worth checking prices for this place: https://www.innkeeperscollection.co.uk/hotel/the-melville-inn-lasswade-midlothian#/

This is where DH and I stay every year when we come up for the Fringe. It's quite a way out from the centre but buses are very regular/frequent, and it's a nice place.

So don’t fucking click on a Edinburgh Thread 🙄

Sunbeam18 · 01/09/2024 17:22

There might be an event in the city (eg rugby/football/big concert) on the weekend you are looking at which has inflated hotel prices

RaraRachael · 01/09/2024 17:22

OK I'll fuck off then.
Enjoy staying in shitty overpriced Edinburgh 🤣🤣🤣

Edinburgh is ridiculously expensive. No idea why as it's not a place I'd ever choose to visit

Do you know anything about Edinburgh? This is a rather strange comment.

There are a lot of guest houses along the A701 coming south from the centre. The names are Newington Road, Minto Street, Craigmillar Park, Mayfield Gardens but it’s all one long road. You might find something more affordable amongst those. Also along Pilrig Street in Leith and around London Road to the northeast of the centre.

Dextybooboo · 01/09/2024 17:49

Stayed in the Murrayfield hotel a few times. Lovely hotel. Right on a bus route into the centre. You can walk it but about 20mins /half hour if I remember rightly. Taxi I'd guess around the £15 mark now.

firesuite · 01/09/2024 18:29

Edinburgh hotels have become ridiculous in recent years. Even a windowless box can be £100 a night midweek. Had to do it for a gig last year and was shocked.

I would honestly recommend getting a Glasgow city centre hotel, it's only 44-50min on the train. Unless you want to be out late late you will be able to get much nicer accommodation.

Don't worry. I won't be visiting again. I've visited all the touristy places.

Your contributions on this thread are amazing 😳

@EBWhite

Try one of the airport hotels. You can get the tram in and out of the city each day. Or at Edinburgh Park.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 01/09/2024 18:37

And enjoy your visit to one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

helpfulperson · 01/09/2024 18:45

Linlithgow is about 20mins on the train and has a couple of pubs with rooms.

EBWhite · 01/09/2024 18:49

Thanks to everyone who gave helpful
advice! Really appreciated. I’m going at the start of October and really looking forward to it

I love Edinburgh!! When we go on a girls trip we tend to air bnb when dh and I go we do a hotel but avoid travel lodge hub ads there's no ventilation and air con doesn't work and the rooms are tiny!

Eating out pigs is amazing and six by nico is our fave

Anonym00se · 01/09/2024 19:20

My DD recently used a Groupon voucher for a Travelodge in Edinburgh city centre. They did Fri and Sat night and it worked out at £60 per night which was a bargain!

The innkeepers collection hotel linked up thread is just along the road from me. The number 3 bus leaves from just outside and will have you to the royal mile in about 20 minutes. There's also a night bus if you're staying out late Grin

I stayed there about 25 years ago, glad to hear it’s still going. I do remember it being very easy to get in and out of town.

coles85 · 01/09/2024 20:29

Another option to consider is the Kings Manor Hotel on Milton Rd. It's in Portobello so near the beach if you fancy it, but it's also a 5min walk to the station which is one stop to Waverley (about 6-7mins on the train) and I'm positive the prices will be less than in the city centre.

We love the bar/pub/restaurant there too, we were in there quite a lot this year on 'non-show' days! 😄Great food.

weebarra · 01/09/2024 20:50

@coles85 - yes my DS1 goes to college right next to the kings manor and I've been there a few times for work things. I think it's decent and Brunstane station is only 10 minutes from Waverley.
