Edinburgh weekend break

Travelling in term time for a weekend with 2 friends. The cost of accommodation is astronomical. Is there something I’ve missed or will we have to suck up paying a couple of hundred each for basic (premier inn) accommodation? Can anyone suggest somewhere beyond going to a hostel or staying way out of the city please? All ideas appreciated!

Ah yes the Bovy bar and restaurant at The Murrayfield Hotel also really good!

Try motel one hotels next to the station (or alternatively Princes Street) , it's well priced and very central. I love Edinburgh.

Some of it is due to council requiring airbnb licences which means places that would normally be available are not. That allows hotels to charge more due to larger demand.

Don't worry. I won't be visiting again. I've visited all the touristy places.

Each to their own.

I've lived in Edinburgh since I was 24. I'm 61 now. I think it's got some fabulous places to visit as a tourist but I detest going into the centre now. It's dirty, tatty, Princes street has no decent shops at all. The roads are awful, full of potholes. The new cycle lanes that popped up as we emerged from lockdown are a nightmare and make driving really difficult. I can completely understand where you are coming from. Bit like people rave about new York...I've been once but would never go back.

I agree. Accommodation is very expensive. We went last year to the markets. 2 nights, train including railcard worked out just short of £500 for a central hotel. That’s without eating out and drinks

I love Edinburgh. I live here, I don’t go dining or drinking much. I walk and walk and walk and find new interesting places all the time.

I was going to go for a night away with some friends somewhere an hours drive of the central belt but was taken aback as to home much the prices were everywhere for a September weekend so we’re just doing a day trip instead.

Prices have really gone up in the last couple of years and you've left it quite late to book for October. If there's 3 adults then you're probably going to need 2 hotel rooms so that'll add to the cost. You might be clashing dates with an event or start of fresher's week, graduations etc which will add to the prices and lack of availability. What dates are you looking for?

I'm a Weegie and I love Edinburgh. Yes, Princes St is miserable but there is fabulous shopping in George St, great pubs in Rose St, wonderful museums and parks, Stockbridge has a great vibe, superb restaurants in Leith, brilliant views from Arthur's seat. Just walking around the New Town is magical. A short bus or train ride takes you to lovely beaches.

(Stirling does have a better castle!Grin)

Look at the Novotel or Premier Inn Edinburgh Park or somewhere on the tram line. Scotrail have savagely cut the late trains so your evenings would be seriously curtailed if you stay outside the city.
