AirBnB - Bed no breakfast?!

Teapleasemilknosugar · 18/08/2024 23:25

Not sure whether IABU but I'm miffed! Stayed in an AirBnB last week and there was only B, no B! First time I've stayed in an AirBnB where this has happened.

We arrived 5pm too (unavoidable delays) so we're too late to head out and forage for breakfast foods, but thankfully I had packed a box of cereal from our kitchen at home so at least kids were happy. We were left 1pt of milk in the fridge. We were staying a whole 6 nights.

Is this the norm? It's literally in the name; I book an AirBnB and expect BnB. Or did I misunderstand?!

I haven't written a review or feedback yet

Sorry but this is your misunderstadning. I book on AIrBnB frequently and you have to apply a filter that says whether you want accommodation with breakfast or not. Some do, some don't.

Tamrastarr · 19/08/2024 10:32

Air BnB is the platform name, other platform used for exactly the same thing is Booking.com. One hints at breakfast, the other doesn't, so just read the terms. I would never expect anything, but the Air BNB's I know provide, tea and coffee as a minimum

DinnerOnTheGrass · 19/08/2024 10:33

willproblem · 19/08/2024 10:11

FWIW, I agree with OP.

I've never stayed at an AirBnB, but the very name indicates that it includes breakfast - or at least the ingredients to make it yourself.

It's misleading advertising.

It really isn’t. If you had ever booked one, you would have done so after an exact description of what kind of accommodation you are getting (yurt, treehouse, rose-covered cottage by the sea, cheapie bedroom in someone’s house, mansion with catering kitchen, billiards room and tennis courts, three-bed flat on the Royal Mile), and what exactly its amenities are (free parking, host greets you or self check-in, Wi-Fi, washing machine, pets allowed, hot tub, queen/double/bunk beds, dishwasher etc).

In the majority of cases no breakfast, unless you’re renting a mansion and there’s the option to hire in private caterers for the whole stay. In some there’s not even access to a kitchen. But the listing will tell you exactly what you’re getting, and the price will reflect that.

The name comes from the fact that the founders started off charging people to sleep on airbeds in their living room in SF, hence the ‘AirbedandBreakfast’ name.

Floralnomad · 19/08/2024 10:35

Well I’ve never stayed in an Air B&B but I always assumed they were mainly self catering , but like hiring a holiday cottage .

KreedKafer · 19/08/2024 10:36

You booked a self-catering property.

The end.

Sparkletastic · 19/08/2024 10:37

Pic of the listing or it didn't happen OP

TerrysCIockworkOrange · 19/08/2024 10:38

I do miss the days when it was the norm that AirBnB hosts would leave a welcome package. It was vanishingly rare not to find a pint of milk, hot drinks and usually either some sort of bread/preserves or some biscuits or cake left for guests.
These days you’re lucky if they’ve cleaned or left a single teabag. AirBnB is pretty shit

AndyandTerrysMum · 19/08/2024 10:39

Never had breakfast in an Airbnb- it’s just a name, not a description of the product.

I think you've just got to be vigilant about reading listings and, particularly, reviews. I've maybe been lucky but I've not had a bad experience so far. The last place I stayed was lovely, scrupulously clean and exactly as described - and as per the glowing reviews. And there was a whole box of teabags of my preferred brand 😄 which was actually slightly annoying as I'd also brought a massive box with me! (Can't risk a tea shortage.)

Teapleasemilknosugar · 19/08/2024 08:53

I did. And I'm expecting what was listed in the advert.

so what did the advert say @Teapleasemilknosugar specifically in terms of breakfast provision? not simply an assumption you've made from the name of the site...

greengreyblue · 19/08/2024 10:48

listings on air bnb are weird though. I stayed in one that said it had an outdoor kitchen….. it was a portable bucket bbq !😂

I don't think we're ever going to find out! 🤔

greengreyblue · 19/08/2024 10:49

@MelodyMalone I e had that. Texted me en route to ask what I would like but had already packed stuff!

Noshowlomo · 19/08/2024 10:52

Haha this is wild. Stayed in a few air bnbs and never once expected breakfast

SaltAndVinegar2 · 19/08/2024 10:53

In the early days when it was just a room in a house, the breakfast provided was "help yourself to an aged box of Cheerios and a cup of tea" type thing. The host would often have gone to work early. In addition it was usually pretty grubby, you'd be tiptoeing round piles of wetsuits on the kitchen side or several days washing up.

It's never been a situation where someone served you breakfast or even provided anything different to their usual food.

I used to use them a lot for work trips and it was quite nice to chat to a host when you were in a strange city as a single person attending a conference or doing field work. Plus it was much cheaper obviously. Work don't allow them any more, it has to be a proper hotel.

crockofshite · 19/08/2024 10:57

READ THE LISTING

Did it say breakfast was included? In the price? Extra? Self catering?

If hosts charged for food they would probably need hygiene certificates and all sorts of beurocratic nonsense.

Not to mention guests' food allergies, intolerances, diets, preferences, individual requirements and fads.

MrsArcher23 · 19/08/2024 11:01

AirBnB is a brand name, not a trade description.
It doesn't look like the OP agrees and she is unhappy with the huge number of people disagreeing with her.
I was delighted to be offered bread, milk, cereal and tea when I stayed in someone's house last year as a solo traveller. If the accommodation is a separate room in a building like in Sardinia last month where I travelled with my family, I was pleased to be offered a few coffee pods, access to a fridge and a microwave.
If the OP wants breakfast, she should book either a hotel or a bed and breakfast guesthouse.

You've never stayed in an Airbnb so you've never used the platform and have no clue what Airbnb business model actually provides, so your view is a bit redundant really

PfishFood · 19/08/2024 11:10

Just reading the wikipedia page and under the section "Criticism and controversies" I'm staggered that there isn't a section for:

"Customer complaints that breakfast isn't always included in a B&B"! 😂

It's basically just an extended version of VRBO now, where you can rent rooms as well as entire properties.

They do experiences too. A friend of mine is a private chef that you can hire through AirBnB. Is she supposed to provide a bed?!

newcatmam · 19/08/2024 11:24

You really need to think yourself lucky that you got milk to be honest. The ones I've stayed in didnt even leave that for us, but then again I wasnt expecting them to as it said very clearly that it was self catering.

I’ve had precisely one not-so-great experience in many years of using Airbnb, and that was hardly surprising, as it was central Edinburgh just before the Festival, and was just v expensive and hosts had £££ signs in their eyes and were very offhand. He flat was fine.

I recognise absolutely the problems with Airbnb, and why some places have banned it, but the actual experience of using it has generally been lovely, and we met some very nice people.

NiceCutRoundDomeDormice · 19/08/2024 11:39

FatOaf · 19/08/2024 09:56

Why would you expect breakfast unless you're staying in a hotel?

Because it's called AirBnB as in air-bed-and-breakfast. Nobody else would be allowed to advertise bed & breakfast and then not provide breakfast.

In that case, I’m going to sue Carphone Warehouse. I went there the other day and it wasn’t a warehouse at all - it was a very standard high street unit. And not one, not ONE of the phones they had in stock was shaped liked a car. Complete set of bastards.

You can filter for lettings that have breakfast.
