AirBnB - Bed no breakfast?!

Teapleasemilknosugar · 18/08/2024 23:25

Not sure whether IABU but I'm miffed! Stayed in an AirBnB last week and there was only B, no B! First time I've stayed in an AirBnB where this has happened.

We arrived 5pm too (unavoidable delays) so we're too late to head out and forage for breakfast foods, but thankfully I had packed a box of cereal from our kitchen at home so at least kids were happy. We were left 1pt of milk in the fridge. We were staying a whole 6 nights.

Is this the norm? It's literally in the name; I book an AirBnB and expect BnB. Or did I misunderstand?!

I haven't written a review or feedback yet

I admit I was thrown when Last Minute let me book a holiday in advance.

FatOaf · 19/08/2024 09:56

Why would you expect breakfast unless you're staying in a hotel?

Because it's called AirBnB as in air-bed-and-breakfast. Nobody else would be allowed to advertise bed & breakfast and then not provide breakfast.

Namechangeno19 · 19/08/2024 09:56

The two airBnB I stayed at in UK,Bathand New Forest ,bothe provided breakfast hampers. Same on Vancouver Island …maybe I have been lucky.
I do think that a pint of milk, tea ,bread and jam would be a nice gesture for arrival.

zingally · 19/08/2024 09:57

The name is a bit of a hang-over from when the concept was more that people would just let out their spare rooms for a couple of nights, whilst still being in the property themselves, and it was a bit of a given that you'd just be absorbed into the family for those few days.

Nowadays it's almost entirely a self-catering thing where you rent out the entire property. More of a holiday home set-up in other words.

It is nice but it's not required. If I'm booking a self catering place I'd always assume no food is provided unless the listing specifically says otherwise.

I’m mad about Virgin Airlines. They let me fly with my husband and children. Surely the fact that I have children means that I am not a virgin?

Well, you could have adopted them. Otoh I flew with VA when pregnant, presumably they thought I'd had divine intervention, they did give me an upgrade.Halo

Beebop1784 · 19/08/2024 10:02

The "Air" in AirBnB means an air mattress on the floor, were you expecting that also?

SanMarzano · 19/08/2024 10:07

I’ve never had breakfast included in an Airbnb, it is just a platform and the name doesn’t mean anything for the specific lets. I’ve never got a wading bird when staying at an Ibis either.

Wigginsbottom · 19/08/2024 10:08

Stayed in loads, and have hosted a lot. Have had some excellent breakfasts but more recently it's common to just find basic cooking facilities (I provide tea, coffee, milk, a kettle and a microwave). It's up to the host and we usually make it clear in the description what's on offer.

willproblem · 19/08/2024 10:11

ChickenTikkaKebabs · 19/08/2024 09:03

It wasn't in the 'advert'.
What they provide is listed in the details of the accommodation.
If food wasn't there, it's not provided.

It's the company name.

It doesn't mean they provide food.

Try taking it on with Trading Standards if you feel so upset.

Not one person here agrees with you.

What does that tell you? Huh?

If you are so upset why didn't you contact the host at the time?

It's a bit passive aggressive to raise it here when you could have asked the host during your stay.

Edited

FWIW, I agree with OP.

I've never stayed at an AirBnB, but the very name indicates that it includes breakfast - or at least the ingredients to make it yourself.

It's misleading advertising.

RB68 · 19/08/2024 10:12

I think you should be able to expect same as a hotel - basic tea and coffee, milk, maybe some cereal/porridge sachets and if a whole family staying for almost a week I would expect at least a 4pter Milk!!

Bummer for people with wheat and dairy allergies. It's a complex world.

anyolddinosaur · 19/08/2024 10:13

If you were told in the ad breakfast was included and you didnt get it that's fraud. If you are just going on the name of the site you are being very unreasonable. Yes most owners leave something for guests for day 1 but no you cant rely on that.

Airbnb is just a platform like booking.com or Expedia - the hosts write the description for their own lets which is what they are advertising. The name of the platform isn’t advertising anything.

When I first heard the name Airbnb, however long ago that was, I did find it a bit unclear. But it only takes a few minutes of looking at the site and various listings to realise what it involves.

I'd never book anything without carefully reading the listing details and a few recent reviews, in order to know what to expect.

It list it in the description of the booking if there is breakfast provided or not - but no its not standard for Air B+B to provide breakfast - they are normally self catering. I use them when i need a quick place to sleep and get breakfast elsewhere.

fortheveryfirsttime · 19/08/2024 10:16

@Teapleasemilknosugar what was actually listed?

I've never expected anything to be provided unless specifically listed.
Sometimes you get a welcome basket or some milk but usually not. Same with any other SC holiday.

I've been seriously shortchanged with confectionary items - Galaxy and Milky Way are many orders of magnitude too small, and a Mars Bar is neither a pub on the red planet nor a means of blocking a war god.Angry

No, I'm not offended, as I said, chuck them in the bin. I'm just trying to point out that the way the law works is you don't have to display a food hygiene certificate if you are making scones. Just like a taxi driver doesn't have to display their driving licence. How do you actually know the driver isn't drunk when you get on the car? Or is banned from driving? You don't. You also don't know whetger a dog has licked your food.

Just don't eat the food is my advice.

You're missing one big difference.

If I choose to take a taxi or get onto a plane I've made my own risk assessment to use those services.

I didn't ask a cottage owner to provide cake or scones. It's not part of the contract. And yes, I don't have to eat it. Quite capable of making that decision.

It's only my opinion of course, but as more and more people are aware of food intolerances, I'm surprised that holiday cottage owners still do this home baking.

You're possibly wasting time and food.

ChickenTikkaKebabs · 19/08/2024 10:22

Thankfully the OP would only need the tea and milk- no sugar.

Phew.

Wagon wheel?

I was relying on those to get me to work. Utter shambles. I got the sack for turning up late.

Occasionally we’ve had some bits and pieces left for us that could pass for breakfast, but I’ve never expected it. I’ve been using the site for over 10 years and all over the world. I’ve picked some stinkers in my time and also some fab ones.

You've used the platform about as much as I have then.

This offering I would expect though. It's in the listing. I'd be happy with that.

I don’t think you said in your OP that it was in the listing, that’s the key difference. In which case I would be a bit miffed.
