AirBnB - Bed no breakfast?!

Teapleasemilknosugar · 18/08/2024 23:25

Not sure whether IABU but I'm miffed! Stayed in an AirBnB last week and there was only B, no B! First time I've stayed in an AirBnB where this has happened.

We arrived 5pm too (unavoidable delays) so we're too late to head out and forage for breakfast foods, but thankfully I had packed a box of cereal from our kitchen at home so at least kids were happy. We were left 1pt of milk in the fridge. We were staying a whole 6 nights.

Is this the norm? It's literally in the name; I book an AirBnB and expect BnB. Or did I misunderstand?!

Yeah, you’ve misunderstood. Hosts often leave a pint of milk / biscuits / local jam type thing but no actual breakfast.

If I remember rightly, AirBnB started out as people letting rooms in their homes, as a cheaper way for people to travel. I wouldn't expect breakfast now. I have stayed in a variety of places where amenities have ranged from tea and a pint of milk to a full breakfast hamper - but that was extra and prearranged.

This - it was airbed & breakfast - an international network of people who could put someone else up on their airbed/spare room/annexe/ home while they were away.

Teenagerantruns · 19/08/2024 00:00

My friends air bnb a room, they provide a continental breakfast. But l have always stayed in a whole property so no breakfast included. I would be happy if l was left some milk tea and coffee. That happens sometimes.

Sweetteaplease · 19/08/2024 00:03

Omg, it's not meant to be a B&B, it's just a name! 🤣

PeriIsKickingMyButt · 19/08/2024 00:03

You misunderstood. Airbnb is accommodation, may include breakfast, usually doesn't.

MelodyMalone · 19/08/2024 00:08

I stayed in a lovely Airbnb cottage recently. The (never seen) owners provided milk, teabags and a couple of packets of nice cookies. But I'd've been very surprised to come downstairs in the morning to find them frying bacon in the kitchen.

MonsteraMama · 19/08/2024 00:12

When you're browsing for accommodation on Airbnb you can filter it so only places that provide breakfast will be shown - but it's not included as standard. They're holiday lets, the name's just a hangover from what it started out as.

Most Airbnbs are self-catering. If you want breakfast provided, check the details - it'll only be with rooms in people's homes or maybe a very close annex to the host. You can't possibly expect breakfast if you were staying in a very stand-alone home nowhere near the host. And especially without asking in advance about it!

tribalmango · 19/08/2024 00:13

Our last AirBnB left a bottle of local wine and a pot of local tapenade (France).
I don't think it was meant for breakfast!

theduchessofspork · 19/08/2024 00:16

They rarely do OP, keep up now.

Trad BnBs still do obvs.

Really no shops open at 6pm??

ErrolTheDragon · 19/08/2024 00:21

Really no shops open at 6pm??

Some rural locations yes, you'd have to drive a heck of a long way.

SheilaFentiman · 19/08/2024 00:22

Yeah, in the dim and distant, you slept on someone’s sofa and they chucked you some toast at breakfast. Now it’s just holiday lets. Though my last one left a nice pack with a croissant, tiny jam, milk in fridge and biscuits - the owner was across the courtyard though so fair enough.

WhereDoWeGoFromHereBill · 19/08/2024 00:34

Thanks for quoting the OP @RogueFemale , it's not as if EVERYONE has already read it 😂

@Teapleasemilknosugar you haven't misunderstood as some posters are saying. It is LITERALLY in the name!

It should be provided, otherwise there is absolutely no point in the name. But out of 4 Airbnbs I have been in, only 1 provided a full breakfast, and it was amazing!

Lizzie67384 · 19/08/2024 00:36

I didn’t know any airbnbs provided breakfast?!?? I thought they were all self catering - most I’ve ever been offered is some bottled water and milk!

deviantfeline · 19/08/2024 01:01

Ha! Yes it's a hangover from the original name.

You would have to search for places that offer breakfast but agree with PPs that who/how did you expect breakfast to be made for you?

I own an Airbnb and I offer milk for tea and coffee, I also leave a locally baked croissant per person and some jam selections and butter as most people come for long weekends and often arrive late on friday. I also leave wine too but that's just me.

I flew on Ryanair recently. Not one single person on the plane was called Ryan, not even the pilot. Bloody disgraceful......

😂I stayed at an establishment called the Royal Court Hotel once, didn't meet a single member of the royal family. I did get breakfast though.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 18/08/2024 23:33

Stay in better places; B&B is exactly that, bed and breakfast. Why use the term '...nb' if you're doing half a job?

That's right.

I've never been to an 'Airbnb' but I would assume that they do have 'air' in them, or does one need to take a cylinder of compressed nitrogeon and one of oxygen and mix your own air when you get there?

It all sounds a bit of bonkers to me, i can't get my head round these newfangled things the youngsters keep coming up with. It was much better when we had pounds, shillings and pence. You knew where you were then.

I’ve stayed at a place called the Kings Arms. I was looking forward to beating Charles Windsor in an arm wrestle.

I think I’ll have to leave a Zero star review - no king in sight.

cariadlet · 19/08/2024 02:46

I've stayed in a few Airbnb's and have never had any food or drink left for me, let alone had breakfast provided.

But they have all been apartments so I expected to be self catering.

I went to this Scottish restaurant recently called McDonald's but was so disappointed because they didn't have any real Scottish food on the menu. I won't be returning there again!

pinkdelight · 19/08/2024 03:53

It must be a dead zone for foraging to be impossible after 5pm. Are there no petrol stations or anything open anywhere near?

Regardless, as pp's say, airbnbs are self catering and we always pack accordingly. You're lucky if there's enough big roll for the first night let along any foodstuffs.

husbandcallsmepickle · 19/08/2024 04:05

Another example of someone not reading the small print which clearly states what is and isn't included.

How long is the small print if it details everything that's not included? Wildebeasts? Tips to the moon? Circus performers at dawn?

Edingril · 19/08/2024 05:30

I presume you read all the information on the property and what was included?

And it said that provided breakfast and they didn't follow through?
