Global warming- Greece

jennylamb1 · 13/07/2024 10:39

In Rhodes, Greece. Have been holidaying here for over 30 years, as have family here. Yearly average at this time of year is high 30 low 24, this week if will be 39/24 and compared to the usual pleasant heat and balmy evenings, it is like being in an oven.
I know it's global warming, however the increase in the number of heat waves here has ramped up significantly and I feel as if for the first time we're experiencing it firsthand which is sobering.

not a hint of global warming here in the UK this summer 😞

jennylamb1 · 13/07/2024 11:39

Well, that's kind of it, unseasonable heat in some areas and unseasonable non heat in others.

it’s not particularly unseasonable at late teens / early twenties i. the UK

just could do with a. bit of global warming on these shores!

itistooeasy · 13/07/2024 11:42

So last time you’ll fly to Greece presumably?

It’s the wettest summer for 24 years. Something is clearly amiss.

Comedycook · 13/07/2024 11:43

We're off to Greece this summer and I'm also feeling a bit apprehensive of the temperature.

usernother · 13/07/2024 11:44

Currently 12 degrees where I am in the UK. I yearn for late teen temperatures.

Fizzadora · 13/07/2024 11:45

Well if you stopped flying to Greece every year maybe the globe wouldn't be quite so warm.

What we are experiencing is global warming. That's why we have such a wet summer. They always said that's how it would play out for us and then you still have people wanting climate change so they can sunbathe from March to november. That's not how it works.

That is true.

climate change, rather than global warming.

jennylamb1 · 13/07/2024 11:49

That is true.

so no greece holiday next year?

halava · 13/07/2024 12:14

Simple solution - staycation in UK during the cooler Summers and have your two week break in two lots, i.e. the two half terms in October and May. Should be tolerable.

I'm afraid I am veering towards climate scepticism. There were always heatwaves, storms, floods, and so on. So I've taken my Green hat off for a while. And anyway I travel a lot and can't be a hypocrite now can I?

Actually the weather we have is likely an impact of climate change - we stopped saying global warming because people understand that to mean a warmer nicer uk

The gulf steam means that historically we have milder better weather than we should for our latitude. It is very susceptible to climate change

Lots of the climate models say the uk will be more miserable than normal

The wet cold weather we have may not have happened if we hadn't messed up the climate

At best the uk will get much more rain - with the warming that has already occurred it will be 10% more rain

At worst for the medium term rain and more cold like we have now

halava · 13/07/2024 12:18

Mild Winters, wet cooler Summers. What's different about that here?

Do you know what the emissions are for aviation? If you did, you wouldn't be spouting this.

BubblePerm · 13/07/2024 12:52

I went to Rhodes in mid June believing it wouldn't be as hot.
The stuff online was saying early to mid thirties but shop and coach thermometers were showing 38-40oc. Far too hot for me and I've noticed over the years that temperatures are downplayed online.

halava · 13/07/2024 13:31

Air temperatures are taken in the shade. The temps in full sun are obviously higher again. I was caught out with that several times myself.

missshilling · 13/07/2024 13:40

I remember being in Cyprus and the BBC weather app was telling me it was 27 degrees in the town I was in. The reality was 38 in the shade.

Biggleslefae · 13/07/2024 13:40

When rising temperatures mean that countries such as Greece become former holiday destinations their economies are going to take a big hit😔

itistooeasy · 13/07/2024 13:56

itistooeasy · 13/07/2024 12:05

i didnt think you’d be back to answer

Yes, agree, the Met Office app temperature is completely different to the BBC Weather one.

Pefkos?

Hoppinggreen · 13/07/2024 14:20

We experienced halestones the size of golfballs in Italy last year that damaged cars amongst other things, it was quite scary.
There is definitely some sort of climate change going on

HerbertHoover · 13/07/2024 20:25

Jeez @itistooeasy settle down a bit. OP doesn't owe you an explanation nor do you actually need one.
