Global warming- Greece

jennylamb1 · 13/07/2024 10:39

In Rhodes, Greece. Have been holidaying here for over 30 years, as have family here. Yearly average at this time of year is high 30 low 24, this week if will be 39/24 and compared to the usual pleasant heat and balmy evenings, it is like being in an oven.
I know it's global warming, however the increase in the number of heat waves here has ramped up significantly and I feel as if for the first time we're experiencing it firsthand which is sobering.

"So last time you’ll fly to Greece presumably?"

"so no greece holiday next year?"

"i didnt think you’d be back to answer"

Jeez @itistooeasy settle down a bit. OP doesn't owe you an explanation nor do you actually need one.

of course the op doesn’t “owe” me a blooming thing

but the lack of insight in starting a thread about global warming

whilst on holiday in Greece, having flown there and indeed every year for the last three decades…. is both a little funny and weird

Chewbecca · 13/07/2024 20:42

We went to Greece in June and were also concerned about their future.

Greek agriculture, as well as tourism, has a pretty bleak outlook.

Not sure where we will go next June!

We experienced halestones the size of golfballs in Italy last year that damaged cars amongst other things, it was quite scary.
There is definitely some sort of climate change going on

no shit.

bellamountain · 13/07/2024 23:07

I was holidaying in Greece over 20 years ago and remember temperatures in the late 30s and early 40s.

Lampzade · 13/07/2024 23:10

Budapest has been 35-40 degrees this week

StSwithinsDay · 13/07/2024 23:14

@itistooeasy · Today 11:10
not a hint of global warming here in the UK this summer 😞

Yes there is. The rain is also part of climate change.

Sinuhe · 13/07/2024 23:22

My hometown used to be covered in snow from mid December to March with hot dry summers around 30-35°C.
Nowadays it's wet & rainy winters and wet and rainy summer with sporadic heatwave of nearly 40°C.
That's central Europe.

Global warming is no longer a thing. Although average world temperatures are rising this gives rise to Climate Change. The reason we are having crap weather this year is because the jet stream is sitting south of us. This has been predicted by at least one climate change model.

You have correctly identified that this is unusual, although we went to Kalymnos in June in the 90s and it was 40 degrees for about a week.

Parts of Florida that occasionally flooded are now permanently under water.

Brightredtulips · 13/07/2024 23:27

Really cold where I am in the uk.

SinkingFeelingSoph · 13/07/2024 23:31

@Funfaxfan were the forecasts for the UK to get colder and wetter? I’ve looked at some modelling but it seems fairly unpredictable… have you got some good sources to share?

I hope this government takes the climate emergency for what it is!

I was in Turkey almost 20 years ago and experienced heat of 48 degrees 🥵 not sure particularly new.

Meanwhile I've had the heating on today 🙄

Garlickest · 14/07/2024 00:40

Here you go - My town, Midlands UK.
73-year historical average compared to last 12 months:
Temperature & rainfall graphs - history is the dotted white line
Pie charts - bonus chart for July only.

Summary: it's getting warmer overall, and this year's been a lot wetter.
1982 was wetter, though, and 1976 was hotter.

That's not quite how it works, itistooeasy.
What used to be once-in-a-hundred-years extremes slowly shift to become the new normal.

Google AMOC and see if that gives you a little clue about what’s happening here.

i don’t deny global warming
good grief no

distinctpossibility · 14/07/2024 06:50

For anyone genuinely interested in the impact of climate change on the UK, National Trust have produced this tool where you can add "layers" to show relative risks (eg storm damage, or humidity) now and predicted across the UK. https://www.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=a44672bb34c4491a909034d0eed76583

SinkingFeelingSoph · 14/07/2024 07:56

@distinctpossibility thank you that’s great.

It doesn’t seem to show the changing coastline and flooding risk, which is significant

You can care about global warming and still go on one holiday. What if it is her only holiday in the year, or if she doesn’t drive a car, or if she doesn’t have children/pets? Flying is not the only cause of global warming?

indeed i agree

but come on… it is pretty funny to be starting a thread about global warming whilst you’re actually on holiday having flown there!

sparkles79 · 14/07/2024 10:06

Just out of interest we're off to Greece end sep/beginning oct next year. How warm is it likely to be?

Yeah yeah fair enough :)

Teacheronholiday · 14/07/2024 11:10

It seems like some people are surprised that global warming and climate change is happening... Just as scientists have been warning us about since the 70s...

SpanielintheWorks · 14/07/2024 11:23

Well, yes, but most people are natural sceptics; and it's taken some time to go from 'maybe this might happen ' to the current overwhelming agreement (or 'oh shit moment', to use the technical term).

Applepencilplant · 14/07/2024 11:25

Going on one holiday isn’t going to make much difference. If people try their best 80% of the time it would make a real difference.
