What can I use to repel mosquito's in Spain.

Off on holiday in a few weeks. I ALWAYS get badly bitten, despite wearing trousers / long sleeves/ wearing mosquito repellent wrist bands and using sprays etc. If there is one bloody mosquito I swear it will find me. My legs in particular are a mess with bites every single time. So, I challenge you lovely lot to find me something that's going to put the buggers off!

Diluted Dettol. Soak a cosmetic pad and smear yourself with it. You’ll stink but it’s worked for me during this pathetic few days of ‘summer’ we had. I had clusters of mosquito bites until a friend mentioned she uses the solution in a spray bottle when she’s on holiday. (so whichever you prefer)

I'm off to Turkey in two weeks and get eaten alive. I've bought these bracelets and they get great reviews!

I'm going to wear one on my wrist and one on my ankle for double protection.

These, from the Mercadona supermarket. The wristbands might work but I've never tried them when I've been there.

Kind patches do mosquito repellent patches that are meant to be brilliant. I’m on holiday tomorrow, and have them and the pestect bracelets mentioned above, I’ll come back and update!

Avon so soft.

HumanbyDesign · 12/07/2024 00:10

Citronella oil. Absolutely in various formats & completely natural!

EffinMagicFairy · 12/07/2024 00:14

Get one of these if you unfortunately get bitten., they stop the urge to itch www.amazon.co.uk/ZAP-IT-Mosquito-BITE-Relief/dp/B00E1MKX9G#:~:text=Extensively%20tested%20by%20leading%20entomologists,effective%20device%20to%20reduce%20itching.

This is good, just smells a bit lemony

Link here for reviews but don't buy it on Amazon as delivery is a fortune!

The one thing that I have found works best is to not wear any perfume and also avoid other products with a strong scent: body lotion/shaving foam/shower gel etc. I still wear a repellent too but have found not wearing perfume has definitely made a difference.

Merryfreddy · 12/07/2024 01:15

The bracelets didn't work for my family or me when we used them on a trip to Spain a couple of years ago despite the great reviews. One person even got a bite right under the bracelet they were wearing!

Kleptronic · 12/07/2024 01:16

Sprays containing Deet and Picaridin actually work the best, for the longest, against the most species. Soray your clothes. Wear loose clothing and cover arms, legs, ankles and feet.

IR3535 (Ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate) also works but not for as long and only against mosquitos and some tick species.

There's a BBC Sounds 'Sliced Bread' episode where they tested them in a mosquito factory (!). Citronella etc. do nothing at all.

Mukirinessly · 12/07/2024 03:05

Yes Deet or Picaridin. Don’t bother with anything else.

Knackeredmommy · 12/07/2024 03:09

In the Caribbean now, this is brilliant, www.mosi-guard.com/

AphraBean · 12/07/2024 06:42

DEET - highest % you can get - and cover up from dusk to dawn.

I react horribly to mosquito bites so have tried all sorts of bracelets, patches, essential oil based things etc, But DEET is the only thing that works.

Greatallblack · 12/07/2024 06:45

Odomos cream (buy on Amazon) only thing I’ve ever found to work.

Oneearringlost · 12/07/2024 07:04

DEET! Nothing else works anywhere as well.
Second listening to the BBC sounds "Sliced Bread".

We recently used these on holiday. One on one wrist and one on one ankle each as they suggest and noone got bitten at all and none of that slimy spraying over tiled hotel floors reeking the place out.

Highly recommend.

Came on to say these - we used them last year in Majorca and they're brilliant.

mitogoshi · 12/07/2024 07:11

An insect repellent containing 50% deet, nothing else is really effective

Ohthere · 12/07/2024 07:13

‘Off’ is the best one where I am, or Autan. Get the tropical version if you can. If sitting outside at peak mosquito light a mosquito coil too. I don’t know if they’ve stopped biting me or if I’ve built up resistance and don’t react anymore but I don’t seem to have any bites yet this year. Maybe they’re just waking up as the summer was late in arriving. Best of luck, I hate the wee bastards!

Jungle Formula works for my DH and I and mossies love my DH. We always spray up before going out for dinner (we try and use the balcony or a designated part of the room for this as it’s not good for my throat). I concentrate on my wrists and ankles. We found leaving the balcony/patio door closed after about 7.45 pm really helps too.

Interesting.

I’m pregnant and didn’t want to use Deet even though apparently it is fine.

I am the same as you OP, mosquitoes love me and apparently your blood even better when you’re pregnant.

I used Incognito spray and shower gel, did a load of sitting outside at dusk and other risky things, and got one bite on the way home when I forgot to put it on.

Other people I was with did get very bitten so it wasn’t just they weren’t around.

So my experience is that other stuff than deet does work, but I’m also a fan of sliced bread programme and would usually agree with it!

Anyway, Incognito, spray is non sticky and I think smells nice, also used shower gel as a backup.

If you are a walking all-you-can eat buffet for biting insects bracelets, Avon Skin so Soft, citronella, eating marmite and other woo products simply will not work.

DH is attractive to mosquitoes and reacts badly to their bites. The only products that work for him are proper insect repellants. Those containing high levels of deet or picaridin are the only things that work for him.

The first list may work for those only moderately attractive to mosquitoes, but not for DH. If he so much as misses an inch of skin when applying the repellent he gets bitten there. He is that attractive to mosquitoes.

He uses Autan or Jungle Formula.

I promise you I usually am that buffet! And it is the first holiday I have never been bitten using Pestects. I sound like I work for them now!!

Tried this (incognito) just now is south of France and it’s amazing - it’s like they don’t know you are even there. I’m normally a mega magnet for mozzies but they just flew past me. It’s a bug spray and instead of repelling it makes you invisible to them in smell terms. Really interesting radio 4 doc about the inventor and the process etc.
