What can I use to repel mosquito's in Spain.

Off on holiday in a few weeks. I ALWAYS get badly bitten, despite wearing trousers / long sleeves/ wearing mosquito repellent wrist bands and using sprays etc. If there is one bloody mosquito I swear it will find me. My legs in particular are a mess with bites every single time. So, I challenge you lovely lot to find me something that's going to put the buggers off!

As someone who gets eaten alive by mosquitoes, I took mosquito bands I got from Amazon, Avon skin so soft and a repellent from Boots when I went to Australia last year. I used all 3 at the same time- nothing!
Before I would have had loads

If you’re in Spain already, then try Goibi anti mosquito spray - very effective and smells good too.

Movinghouseatlast · 12/07/2024 18:38

Those Pestects things certainly don't work for me. I got bitten to shit in Italy last year, I was really uncomfortable with the itching.

Skin So Soft also doesn't work for me, and in fact there is no scientific evidence that it works as a repellent.

I use high strength Deet at night and Incognito during the day.

cansu · 12/07/2024 18:48

Deet. Plus plug ins for your accommodation plus take anti histamine daily in the run up us while you are there. I also take hydrocortisone cream for the bites if they get me.

TheShiningCarpet · 12/07/2024 18:56

DEET is gold standard

I was sceptical about the Skin So Soft claims, so looked into it before buying, and there are studies showing its effectiveness, was pleasantly surprised!

This earlier one is somewhat less compelling but still shows an effect

Mosquito repellent effectiveness: A placebo controlled trial comparing 95% DEET, Avon Skin So Soft, and a “special mixture” | British Columbia Medical Journal

Background In Canada, mosquitoes are mainly considered to be nuisance pests—their bites causing a pruritic irritation that itches for a day or two and then subsides. Until recently, there were no short- or long-term sequelae from such bites, aside from...

I’ve always used Skin so Soft and it’s never let me down.

Tried this (incognito) just now is south of France and it’s amazing - it’s like they don’t know you are even there. I’m normally a mega magnet for mozzies but they just flew past me. It’s a bug spray and instead of repelling it makes you invisible to them in smell terms. Really interesting radio 4 doc about the inventor and the process etc.

I second incognito. Really good and it doesn’t contain deet. Mosquitos love me and I react badly to bites too. I’m stocking up ready for my holiday. Can get offers on it in a few stores. They also sell other products like body wash, incense sticks too.

Ineffable23 · 13/07/2024 07:58

I use incognito anti mosquito as well. DEET is good too but it stresses me out because I don't want to melt my glasses/watch etc.

Kind patches do mosquito repellent patches that are meant to be brilliant. I’m on holiday tomorrow, and have them and the pestect bracelets mentioned above, I’ll come back and update!

Coming back to update. I forgot my patches, but the pestects bracelets were brilliant (wore one on wrist and one on opposite ankle) neither myself or DH were bitten once, including during trips to mountainous areas etc whereas on our trip last year we were eaten alive.

Pammela2 · 17/07/2024 21:02

I agree with deer and take some steroid cream incase you get bitten.

i also bought one of these. My bites usually turn into blisters and are horrible and this absolutely helped, along with the steroid cream!

UPDATE***
Used combination of Smudge, incognito spray AND showered with the soap. Was fine until evening of night 4/day 5. Should've brought some thing else that would stop the bloody itching though! I have three huge red hives on my legs. Going home tomorrow

DEET. Buy the tropical strength. Only thing that works.

Will do when I get back. Miles away from any chemist here and packing tonight. Lovely holiday but shattered just want my own bed!

I take with me Anthisan bite cream and take an antihistamine tablet. This really helps to stop any bites getting worse and stops them getting infected. I’d also suggest a Zap It to help with the itching

Wish you've posted this before ( unless I missed it?) Wondering should I get some when I get home?

Go into the local pharmacy when you get there and ask them what they recommend, using what the locals use is always the best.

If not the Pharmacy another poster's recommendation of Mercadona products is a good one, again it is what the locals buy.

BronwenFrideswide · 26/07/2024 19:28

Pity you were not near a local pharmacy because again their products for if you are bitten are very good, something called After Bite is good.

It depends. I think you’re best off starting with it ASAP. If they get worse I’d go to the pharmacy and get something off them. Definitely get some in ready for your next trip. Do you think you were lax on the 4th/5th day with your applications or they just got through? I recall spraying everywhere with incognito whilst just in my underwear so it didn’t touch those bits of skin. I went to sleep and one managed to get my bottom (even though I still had my underwear On) 🙄

Assuming you're home? Time to see a pharmacist!

Tiredallthetimeneedsleep · 27/07/2024 22:29

Was in departures! Will try to find pharmacy open Sundays.

I know probably too late but French pharmacies sell Phenergan crème, it’s great for bites.
