Butlins Unfair holiday termination

Dontgi · 16/05/2024 14:56

My young families' holiday was terminated from Butlins skegness because my 6 year old son had a coughing fit in the early hours of our first morning there and was sick twice because of it.

Both my DDs have been sick during the night at Bognor Butlins on seperate occasions and we weren’t asked to leave. We were kindly given fresh sheets, had to fill out a form but no follow up after that.

So, your child may have a vomiting bug. Or they may have been coughing so badly they vomited, which would make me ponder the possibility of whooping cough. I think not spreading bugs throughout Butlins makes sense.

Edited

He's vaccinated against whooping cough, he does have asthma

Was this a while ago, it would seem strange that the different resorts have different policies?
Another thing you've highlighted, my younger had no symptoms of illness neither did myself or my husband

But they can’t make exceptions because people will take advantage. The rules are the rules.

Your husband also used the word ill.

TeenLifeMum · 16/05/2024 21:04

If they have an outbreak of norovirus they have to report it and the whole site could be shut for a deep clean by public health teams. You told them your dc was ill so they have to follow their policy. They’ve not done anything wrong.

We had been out of our accomodation the following day and when we returned we were locked out and the safety team were sent, I have nothing to lie about

So you were asked to isolate but didn't, breaking their T&C's.

Dontgi · 16/05/2024 21:16

We didn't have food in the accomodation. I saw the family who had contracted norovirus at a Butlins resort in the newspaper, terrible! The whole family throwing up throughout the night = reasonable ground.

It doesn’t matter. You aren’t above the rules, sickness = isolate for 48 hours or go home.

Why didn’t one of you go and the other keep your child isolated?

Theblessedchild · 16/05/2024 21:29

I'm sorry this happened to you but I have to agree with the others and say you have to take some responsibility for this.

I'm a regular butlins holiday maker and yes I've been in your position when my children were younger, the only difference being when I rang for clean sheets, I was there to receive them and yes we did isolate incase they were infectious.

The OP said they had no food - so I’m asking why the need for everyone to go rather than just one of the adults

(because clearly they just ignored the request to isolate hence being locked out and asked to leave).

longdistanceclaraclara · 16/05/2024 21:35

Butlins were right here op.

NowYouSee · 16/05/2024 21:37

I get it, it’s annoying. But places have to have strict rules even if it may seem unfair and can’t leave it down to discretion as norovirus ans the like spread so easily.

for example DC (who is asthmatic) recently got out of breath running around in after school games, gulped a load of water, some went down the wrong way. Cue coughing fits which led to a vomit. Out for 48 hours says school. Annoying but once you introduce discretion everyone has an excuse unless the child is sitting in a corner with a bucket looking green.

ItDoesntHaveToBeDave · 16/05/2024 21:39

@ARichtGoodDram Ah ok thanks. Good point

Gazelda · 16/05/2024 21:42

Their T and Cs are clear.
Your DS ate an enormous amount of greasy food.
Your DS was sick.
It's likely this was because of the food he'd eaten, but butlins aren't to know that. Many would lie at this stage.
They offered you the option to isolate or they'd terminate the holiday.
You decided not to isolate.
They terminated your holiday.

What's not fair?
What's not reasonable?

Summerof2024 · 16/05/2024 21:42

I wonder what they do for adult weekenders when literally half the hen/stag dos are vomiting mid hangover/bender.

EnglishBluebell · 16/05/2024 22:26

@Dontgi If he has Asthma then you have a case against them! Child coughed himself sick due to Asthma and Butlins made you all leave because of it. Discrimination

Except her husband said ''My son was ill last night'' and not ''My son was sick last night because he coughs a lot due to asthma''.

The last time it happened was probably 2/3 yrs ago. It was after a day of travel, lots of swimming, fun fair rides and ice cream/chocolate fudge cake.

SD1978 · 17/05/2024 07:51

You were told to isolate for 48hrs- don't want to, went out, and they then said you had to leave the resort as you'd broken the terms of their request. Seems like this was on you, not them.

This is a good point

Perhaps copious amounts of alcohol kill norovirus?

In which case Butlins assumed you were taking the other option which was to leave.
Butlins have no reason to believe that your child was sick due to eating crap all day and can you imagine how awful it would be if someone spread a vomitting bug throughout the whole resort and they had knowingly allowed a sick child to freely mix? It could cost them millions

Nonsense
They are supposed to just take the word of the parents?
They cant risk a vomiting bug in the resort, people do like to chuck the word "discrimination" around don't they

Any reason why you all had to go?
