Butlins Unfair holiday termination

My young families' holiday was terminated from Butlins skegness because my 6 year old son had a coughing fit in the early hours of our first morning there and was sick twice because of it.

My husband rang to request fresh sheets, his opening line being "my son was ill last night" taken very literally!!

Well he was

Would children with sickness bug feel well enough to be playing and carrying on as normal? Or is it more accurate that children are sick a lot, sometimes because they eat too much, sometimes because they trigger their gag reflex from coughing too much thus inducing vomit

Sorry OP this one is on you really

Yes they could that's why the 48 hour rule is annoying as the child is often perfectly well and bouncing around

From 20 years of working in schools - yes. Children with bugs absolutely can seem fine between vomiting sessions with some things

At the end of the day it’s in their t&c’s

And if you chose to leave rather than isolate then you terminated your holiday, not them

Marblessolveeverything · 16/05/2024 20:07

YABU, your child vomited that are very open about the rules 🤷‍♀️

nocoolnamesleft · 16/05/2024 20:10

So, your child may have a vomiting bug. Or they may have been coughing so badly they vomited, which would make me ponder the possibility of whooping cough. I think not spreading bugs throughout Butlins makes sense.

Dontgi · 16/05/2024 20:11

I should have given my reasons for discussing it on here sooner,... don't want this to happen to any other genuine family. Both my children have coughed so much that they've been sick, I thought it was common. I would have.cleaned it up and noone would have been any the wiser but it obviously ruined our holiday and I just want as many people as possible to be aware of it, so the same doesn't happen to them

When DD was was much younger she was poorly on holiday and we requested clean sheets/towels which hotel provided. She had a miserable 24 hours staying in the room just in case )not poorly again) but we weren't asked to leave? How odd

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 16/05/2024 20:13

And to be fair I think hers was probably eating too much ice cream too

It's in the t&c so everyone will be aware and most people wouldn't let their kids eat like that

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 16/05/2024 20:15

Ahh apologies just read OP saying they were given option to isolate.

Dontgi · 16/05/2024 20:16

There was no between sessions in this case, one episode of coughing where he was sick twice, no more after that, no other symptoms before or after

ARichtGoodDram · 16/05/2024 20:17

Why did you choose to leave rather than isolate?

Dontgi · 16/05/2024 20:21

We were not given the choice, resort safety team were sent round saying we had 2 hours to pack our things and leave

OP posts:
Dontgi · 16/05/2024 20:26

I truly respect why these measures are in place but this was just not fair

You said you could isolate for 48 hours or have your holiday terminated.

Unless there's a specific underlying known medical condition, I would assume coughing in the night is caused by a virus, especially in a child if that age. If for example he has asthma and you know that it causes coughing fits which make him sick, obviously that's different but otherwise sorry m, I'm with them, balance of probability he's ill

He does have asthma

Marblessolveeverything · 16/05/2024 20:31

@Dontgi The rules are the same for everyone so it is fair.

If your child is known to vomit if coughing, do you know what caused thr cough?

And why on earth were they let eat so much in one day. Their stomach must have been uncomfortable that is a huge amount for anyone not to mind a six year old.

I get the on holiday have treats but I am reading three burgers and ice-cream and I am reading this as this is something you know they are prone to.?

That’s not what you said earlier…

Because my son had been sick twice we were told that we had reported an illness and we could isolate in our room for 48 hours or have our holiday terminated!

The rules are the same for everyone, that’s precisely what makes them fair

We had been out of our accomodation the following day and when we returned we were locked out and the safety team were sent, I have nothing to lie about

OP posts:
PilgrimsGrin · 16/05/2024 20:41

So they told you to isolate, you ignored them and when they checked to make sure you were isolating they then terminated the holiday?

SouthLondonMum22 · 16/05/2024 20:42

Sounds like you were locked out because you refused to isolate.

No one has ruined their holiday except for you. Butlins can’t bend their rules.
