Where would you honeymoon in this situation

5 kids between us. Second marriage. Lucky to have a good budget. Don't mind flights up to 10ish hours from London. Love all food, little bars and adventure. But wouldn't mind two nights of luxury as part of a 5 night trip (kids mean we can't stay for longer). Don't really want Nordic, Caribbean, US (just because we've done that a lot) or anything we would normally do as a family. Something more exciting ..... GO ......

What time of year?

QueSyrahSyrah · 31/01/2024 19:58

For 5 nights if it were me I'd stay closer to London and pick something fabulous in Europe, or if you want something once in a lifetime maybe long haul but overnight and due south to avoid jet lag. Maybe safari or a gorgeous South African wine estate?

Kruger National Park. Exchange rate is good at the moment and its fabulous. Do a couple of nights at Nottens private game reserve. You will have an unforgettable experience.

Good point! I think realistically june or October - but we could actually do any time after May

Amalfi coast?

Zippedydoodahday · 31/01/2024 20:17

If it were longer I'd say Costa Rica. But for such a short break I reckon you're better to stay closer to home so you don't lose so much holiday to travel and time differences. Personally I'd pick somewhere in Europe.

Istanbul

CoQ10 · 31/01/2024 20:19

That does sound amazing and the lack of jet lag is a bonus!

Amalfi coast?

One of my favourite places but we have (been very lucky to have) done it before

Try one of the boutique hotels in Funchal. Also look at the Saccharum Resort in Calheta.

AreTheyOrArentThey · 31/01/2024 20:21

Morocco!

Glad to help!
It's also only a 3.5 hour flight so you max out on holiday not time spent flying.

thistimelastweek · 31/01/2024 20:45

Just popped in to say that I'm old and I Madeira froze my brain.

It's great if you like walking and the weather suits that.

Otherwise, there's better places

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 31/01/2024 20:49

Marrakesh
Budapest
Greek Island

Eyesopenwideawake · 31/01/2024 20:50

Madeira is fine - if you're over 80. It's overrun with cruise ships day visitors and Funchal is wall to wall massive hotels (OK, the old town is nice but it's tiny). How about Seville and Grenada? Lots of stuff to do and see and not far from the coast. Or Monaco if your budget is really healthy 😏

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 31/01/2024 21:02

Nice is great in June and October with gorgeous places to visit east and west.
Treat yourselves to the 5* Negresco Hotel on the Promenade des Anglais.

PizzaPastaWine · 31/01/2024 21:06

Istanbul then Cappadocia?

I've not been to either but they are on my list.

zippingalongslowly · 31/01/2024 21:08

I'd go in September for post school hols and mega heat but still lovely weather in the Mediterranean.

What about a Greek island? Santorini is meant to be very romantic. Or of course there are quieter ones- all sorts!

Or Sicily?!! That could be amazing for a honeymoon.

Or as someone has suggested Amalfi Coast in mainland Italy (or Cinque Terra?).

I agree with PP that Madeira, whilst nice, seems a bit meh as a choice for honeymoon.

CatherinedeBourgh · 31/01/2024 21:10

Tanzania. Ngoro ngoro crater lodge.

or Mnemba island in Zanzibar.

I think September makes sense. You're naming all of my fav places! Cinque Terre is my favourite ever, but I've done it three times!

So good to get a mix of opinions - I'd have booked Madeira based on the pictures alone. But I don't fancy over 80s cruisers!

Sicily!
taormina (stay in Four Seasons for the luxury nights) then Catania (Etna)
or Palermo and Cefalu
