£5k - where?

HoppyHat · 27/01/2024 17:15

I inherited £5k from a relative when they died with the caveat that it should be used for travel.
Her NOK said of course I can ignore her wishes. But tbh I'm in a position where I actually DO want to follow her wishes.

So, looking for a bit of inspiration really!

Where would you go?

For how many people, and what ages? What do you like doing, and where have you enjoyed to visit before?

HoppyHat · 27/01/2024 17:26

I left out who and what we like and where we've been before on purpose so I maybe just get some suggestions that I hadn't considered iyswim.
So really just wondering where YOU would go, not your ideas of where I should go necessarily.

But no kids, just me and dh

It totally depends on how long you want to go for, what time of year, do you want to stretch the 5k or do you want to blow it in a fancy hotel for three nights?

Your question is somewhat pointless without that info.

VioletladyGrantham · 27/01/2024 17:32

A river cruise through Austria, etc.

ooooohnoooooo · 27/01/2024 17:38

DH and I went 1st class interrailing last year. Several countries, lots of variety. A brilliant and memorable trip.

PinkPondQueen · 27/01/2024 17:39

A road trip around Sicily including getting the ferry out to the Aeolian Islands, ending with at least a week on Stromboli watching her erupt! My favourite place on Earth ❤️

Riverlee · 27/01/2024 17:40

Luxury holiday to Seychelles.

TeenLifeMum · 27/01/2024 17:45

I really want to tour parts of America - Boston and Nantucket, Washington DC, New Orleans, Denver/Salt lake city - so I’d pick one or two of those areas. But, I’m aware my holidays aren’t what most people opt for.

froomeonthebroom · 27/01/2024 17:45

California road trip

FannyFifer · 27/01/2024 17:49

I have always wanted to do the trans Siberian express, might not be the best plan at the minute though.

Crochetablanket · 27/01/2024 17:49

I’d do USA multi city trip , NEW York and Washington or Chicago and NewOrleans

@ooooohnoooooo that sounds like my kind of inter railing - did you plan it yourself ? Or go with a suggested itinerary ?

slowerprofessor · 27/01/2024 17:50

Ah ok, no children still helpful!
I'd do a road trip in California Star

Chewbecca · 27/01/2024 17:50

I’ve never been to Australia/ New Zealand and a trip there is very much on my To Do list when I have spare time & finances. Also a Pacific Islands cruise. And a Vietnam trip. The list is actually quite long…
My favourite (possibly) past ‘special’ trip that I would recommend was to Japan.

Chocbuttonsandredwine · 27/01/2024 17:51

Sri Lanka
costa rica
west coast of USA, San Fran, Big Sur etc
Marrakech
Spanish coastal road trip

Samanabanana · 27/01/2024 17:57

Canadian Rockies road trip!

BIWI · 27/01/2024 17:59

If you can take the time, I'd go either to Australia/NZ and travel around, or to the US/Canada and do that.

NewYear24 · 27/01/2024 18:00

I think I’d pick a multi centre holiday in Thailand as I haven’t been there, or possibly visit India.

I would say some of the suggestions so far would cost more than 5k.

Midnlghtrain · 27/01/2024 18:01

Canada - lake Louise etc
New York / Chicago / Boston
Antarctic (drake passage cruise)
Safari (South Africa)

So many possibilities!

AIstolemylunch · 27/01/2024 18:03

Holiday to the Seychelles here too but sadly I don't think 5K is enough. With that id prob go greek islan hopping or phillipines/vietnam

jay55 · 27/01/2024 18:05

Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica. Visiting pyramids, cloud forrest and volcanos.

eurochick · 27/01/2024 18:06

Costa Rica and Cambodia would be top of my list.

HuntingForChicken · 27/01/2024 18:07

Lots of these posts seem to be talking about holidays that could easily cost double the budget.

HeyMicky · 27/01/2024 18:08

China by rail.

St Pancras - Brussels - Cologne - Moscow - Ulan Batar - Beijing

I agree, I had to go back to read OP, thought maybe i'd mistaken 5k for 15k...! 5k doesn't go far these days some of the suggestions are waaaay off the mark unfortunately!

Whatsinaname1234 · 27/01/2024 18:11

Vietnam is pretty great and for £5k you can live it up as it’s affordable, also you can see a lot.

Someone suggested new york but it’s so expensive your budget may not get you far. We spent around that sum in 4 days in december excluding flights. I reckon you’d want more for your money.

New Zealand is also amazing and beautiful. So special.
