£5k - where?

HoppyHat · 27/01/2024 17:15

I inherited £5k from a relative when they died with the caveat that it should be used for travel.
Her NOK said of course I can ignore her wishes. But tbh I'm in a position where I actually DO want to follow her wishes.

So, looking for a bit of inspiration really!

Where would you go?

oh yeah 5k probably could do a safari, thats a really special experience

HoppyHat · 27/01/2024 18:19

Thanks everyone! Loads of ideas to ponder.

idontlikealdi not a pointless question at all. I clearly said what prompted my question, and followed up by explaining I didn't necessarily want you to suggest where I should go, but where you all would do in the same position.

So someone might like a really really luxurious and very very expensive weekend somewhere whereas someone else might suggest a really cheap hostel backpacking trek somewhere unfashionable but amazing where £5k would last a month!

I've done a lot of international travel so these days I'm just as happy in the UK. I'd hire a castle or a huge luxury cliff house and have a fabulous long weekend with the people I love most.

Chewbecca · 27/01/2024 18:26

I’ve made the (quite possibly wrong!) assumption you can add to the £5k, that’s going to take your existing holiday plans to the next level!

gazpachosoupday · 27/01/2024 18:30

I would go to Malta for personal reasons.

In a dream world, I would do something like the Orient Express for a really expensive holiday

Or I would do a couple of weekend breaks maybe one every couple of months, so I had something to look forward to.

Just talking about myself, its been a while since I have travelled, I would stay close to home to start off with, till I got my travelling bug back (if it came back)

Atethehalloweenchocs · 27/01/2024 18:30

Japan!!!! I have always wanted to go there, but no way can I afford it. The other thing I would love to do is go to Venice on the Orient Express (if it still even does that).

hellojelly · 27/01/2024 18:33

I'd go skiing. Leisurely breakfasts every day, skiing until after mid afternoon. Late, small lunches, a spa treatment in the afternoon, then some drinks and dinner later on.

SheWasASkaterGirl · 27/01/2024 18:39

It depends on what you like. If you're into history abd architecture and food id suggest a trip to Italy.

If you're into beach holidays and just lazing around in the day all inclusive but partying in the eve I'd suggest Cancun.

If you're flexible on dates and can go 3+ weeks I'd maybe suggest Thailand. Play around on skyscanner and return flights are around £700pp return. Then once you're out there costs of travel, accommodation and food are so cheap. A nice 4* hotel is often under £50 a night for the room so you don't exactly have to slum it.

Or if you're looking at something different and don't want to blow the whole budget in one go, then do loads of easyjet long weekend city breaks. We flew to barca last November for £50 return. Stayed in a 4* hotel via expedia deal. Airport parking was about £30. Just book everything months in advance. It will give you loads of little weekends to look forward to.

Route 66 🇺🇸

MaryActsLikeSheDontCare · 27/01/2024 20:32

Vancouver island. That’s my dream

Snoozymoozy · 27/01/2024 20:38

Assuming you can add to the pot, I'd do a california road trip (including Yosemite) or the Maldives. These were my most memorable trips!

SausageAndEggSandwich · 27/01/2024 20:42

Chile - mountains, beaches and stargazing in the Atacama desert

ooooohnoooooo · 27/01/2024 20:49

@Crochetablanket we planned it ourselves.

The app is a bit shit but we ended up just deciding roughly on countries /cities to go to and took it from there.

There's a good FB group 'interrailling for the older crowd' (😂) that's worth looking at.

We went to Amsterdam
(Tulips!) , Berlin (fab) sleeper to Vienna (loved it, new fave city), chur, across mountains (spectacular!) to Italy. Verona and finally Venice (flew back) Just under 3 weeks in all so quite a leisurely pace.

Trains are such fun and so much more relaxing than flying. We met lots of interesting people and saw amazing views.

A wonderful trip. We organised accommodation ourselves too.

I'd encourage everyone to give it a try.

Lots of these posts seem to be talking about holidays that could easily cost double the budget.

I was just thinking that! Most flights to the USA/Canada are £800 pp at least. Australia £1200/1300 pp!

JaneKatSuttonGoals · 27/01/2024 20:53

Japan - but no idea if it's doable for £5k
Otherwise probably Greece or maybe Italy - Sorrento/Positano/Ischia/Capri

converseandjeans · 27/01/2024 20:58

Interraiiling through Europe
New York
Australia
Canada

Jeannie88 · 27/01/2024 21:00

Depends on what you like? Arctic/anywhere cruise, American tourism, cultural tours in Asia, backpacking. Personally if was free to travel wherever I wanted and places I hadn't been i would go exotic and far away. X

myphoneisbroken · 27/01/2024 21:01

Greek island hopping for sure

reluctantbrit · 27/01/2024 21:04

With this budget I would go for Iceland or Sicily.

Sounds great. Looking to do that this year but with children in tow.

Firstleftpastthetree · 27/01/2024 21:08

Canadian road trip. You can pinch our itinerary if you want! Nothing on earth can compare to seeing grizzlies and orcas in their natural habitat.

biarritz · 27/01/2024 21:10

With that budget you could do an off peak ski holiday and have enough left to do ten days interailing in the summer (I would include Austria, Poland and Slovenia in the itinerary)
