£5k - where?

HoppyHat · 27/01/2024 17:15

I inherited £5k from a relative when they died with the caveat that it should be used for travel.
Her NOK said of course I can ignore her wishes. But tbh I'm in a position where I actually DO want to follow her wishes.

So, looking for a bit of inspiration really!

Where would you go?

Greek island hopping for 2weeks including spending money

creusa23 · 27/01/2024 21:14

Snow shoeing and husky sledding in the Arctic - with bonus northern lights if you're lucky. I did this trip a few years ago and it's the best place I've ever been (and a really good holiday company too). All arctic clothing etc provided for you so no extra cost there, so with a bit of spending money and airport parking etc that should be bang on 5k for two of you!

Japan. Best place I've ever been. 2nd only to Iceland, with slightly lower chance of being cooked by a volcano

HoppyHat · 27/01/2024 21:19

Thank you all very much for your input. It's really helpful.

We could add a bit to the pot but not masses.

My relative lived for travel and was pretty adventurous, even into her 80s and a widow.

I'm going to make a list of all the ideas posted that make me feel excited and show dh. And take it from there.

Thank you all again 😊

Brazil or Argentina!

Dmsandfloatydress · 27/01/2024 21:25

5k will get you a couple of weeks 5 star in Thailand, or an African safari in Kenya or south africa. Not enough for Botswana unless you are budget camping. It's not enough to do new zealand or OZ properly unless backpacking. Costa Rica maybe? I would go for the safari. See all the animals in the wild before they are gone.

Alloveragain3 · 27/01/2024 21:29

You've got me thinking now!

Safari in Africa and then on to Cape Town for a winery tour and some beach days

OR

Japan for Cherry Blossom season

Canadian road trip. You can pinch our itinerary if you want! Nothing on earth can compare to seeing grizzlies and orcas in their natural habitat.

I would love to see your itinerary please! Always wanted to visit Canada but not sure where to start 🙂

Ansjovis · 27/01/2024 21:51

I'd go and see the midnight sun in Finland. Everyone thinks of Rovaniemi as the home of santa but in the summer time there are so many wonderful experiences possible and no crowds.

jelly79 · 27/01/2024 21:56

Croatia
Italy

CardinalCat · 27/01/2024 22:08

Is there anywhere that your loved one particularly liked to travel to, which would make it meaningful?
I think I would honour the legacy by spending it in accordance with their wishes and if they had a favourite place, maybe going to explore near there? Sorry for your loss- hope the trip isn't too bittersweet and you really enjoy it!

@Tothepoint99 sorry to hijack but Japan's on my wish list. What kind of budget is doable? Any hints /tips ?

@Crochetablanket we planned it ourselves.

The app is a bit shit but we ended up just deciding roughly on countries /cities to go to and took it from there.

There's a good FB group 'interrailling for the older crowd' (😂) that's worth looking at.

We went to Amsterdam
(Tulips!) , Berlin (fab) sleeper to Vienna (loved it, new fave city), chur, across mountains (spectacular!) to Italy. Verona and finally Venice (flew back) Just under 3 weeks in all so quite a leisurely pace.

Trains are such fun and so much more relaxing than flying. We met lots of interesting people and saw amazing views.

A wonderful trip. We organised accommodation ourselves too.

I'd encourage everyone to give it a try.

@ooooohnoooooo
Thank you! I’ve already been on the site and I’ll def join the FB group too 😁. I love train journeys and there’s so many places to choose from in Europe.

Donimo · 28/01/2024 08:17

Top of my list, I have been and loved

  • New Zealand self drive. Only been to North Island so far but can't wait to do the South Island.
  • USA self drive- Las Vagas to Yosemite to the coast and then drive up to San Francisco
  • Tour around Sri Lanka, we hired a driver (fairly cheap to do) but meant we could go where and when we wanted rather than an organised tour
  • South Africa (going a easter)
  • Italy I love. The lakes and amalfi coast
vincettenoir · 28/01/2024 08:36

Inter-railing around Europe. You could visit a lot of cities and do a couple of coastal places too.

Firstleftpastthetree · 30/01/2024 08:54

Another idea. How about a few days in Helsinki, followed by aurora chasing in northern Finland? That's a holiday to remember forever.

KeeeeeepDancing · 30/01/2024 08:56

South Korea and Japan.

TempleOfBloom · 30/01/2024 09:35

Vietnam.

Or West coast fly- drive. Whale watching, Big Sur, sequoias, Grand Canyon , Yosemite. But that might not be doable for £5k?

minipie · 30/01/2024 09:39

Vietnam and Cambodia, or India. India is not for the faint hearted but it is unforgettable.

@Tothepoint99 sorry to hijack but Japan's on my wish list. What kind of budget is doable? Any hints /tips ?

Ah sorry, my reply was to the fact you can still do the Orient Express. 😊

Verite1 · 02/02/2024 13:53

Thailand or Vietnam. Flights will be most expensive then you can get decent accommodation for cheap price whilst there. Money will go further in Vietnam I believe, but flights are bit more difficult.

Drudgeryofthissocalledlife · 02/02/2024 14:09

I'd go first class inter-railing and go to a mix of luxurious and budget accommodation with nothing mediocre in-between! That flipping between hostelling (which is a completely different ball game in Europe) and seriously special places is the variety I like and will make for memorable moments.

See what deals are up for grabs on jacksflights and let that decide!
