Where is the most overrated holiday destination you’ve been?

Where have you been on holiday and thought “wow, that was a waste of my time and money”.

Mine was travelling to a fairly remote tropical island where people were supposed to be so friendly. Unfortunately we found the people we interacted with in the hotels and restaurants to be anything but nice. It piddled down with rain and then we almost got scammed.

Madeira.... they have this attraction where they push you down a hill in what can only be described as a 90s style wicker patio sofa.... it was just all a bit meh

I came on to say the same! We went there on a cruise - thank god we didn't do a 2 week holiday there!
I love Maderia but you have to go further than Funchal and I've never been on the wicker rides in all the rimes I've been there.
The walking is spectacular!!
I had two weeks in November and looking at when we can a weekend back there soon.

OddityOddityOdd · 23/01/2024 21:36

Hollywood, dull dull dull. Really don't waste money going there. Universal studios slightly interesting but hardly worth the journey.

MrsBungle · 23/01/2024 21:36

Orlando - well the theme park bit. Shit hole.

I’ve not been to Paris for 10 years but I loved it.

I love the Maldives too! I can imagine it’s not quite the same experience in the rainy season though.

I also loved Cape Verde. We saw a turtle laying her eggs in the moonlight. We went all over the island and did sand boarding. It was so interesting!

Agree LA is a shit hole.

PlasticineKing · 23/01/2024 21:37

Vegas. A meat market, should have gone to old vegas rather than the strip.

Loads of places here that others have hated and I’ve loved, just goes to show how we’re all different 🤪

Bracksonsboss · 23/01/2024 21:37

Las Vegas. Blackpool on steroids.

Hawaii (Maui), full of ancient couples in matching leisurewear
San Francisco

rabellocloud · 23/01/2024 21:38

Loved Rome. Liked Berlin. Adore every Polish town and former USSR state I've been to. Loved Moscow

MaidOfSteel · 23/01/2024 21:39

Santa Monica in California. It used to be lovely. Now, the homeless problem is right in your face and everywhere. You could be sat eating on the pier and be approached several times, asking if you're finished your food and can they have it. It's such a sad situation, but also very intimidating. Los Angeles is much the same. Southern California, as a whole, is not what it used to be.

Marchintospring · 23/01/2024 21:39

I guess the clue is in the word "overrated" .

If all you have ever read or heard about a place is positive it stands to reason that lots of people will want to go there. Then of course there's more tourists/ tourist activities than an authentic feel of the place.
Venice is obviously unusual/historic/stunning but any sense of it being a working city is lost. It feels like a theme park for adults.
Who wants non western countries, westernised? Who like the western cities with shops of cheap non western crap that look the same. Who wants traffic, homeless people, beggars, Gucci and Chanel when they are promised sun, space, freedom and difference?

It’s the dog poo, I’ve just never seen so much dog poo in one place.

Yes and they seem to drag their dogs along while they are pooing so it is up the middle of the pavement.

I lived in Dublin for 12 years and adored every moment, so I'm sad to see so many people don't like it. Now live in Portugal but only visit Lisbon as a tourist - it's not nice in high season but in spring and late autumn it's lovely.

QuarterPastThree · 23/01/2024 21:40

Kanoni in Corfu. Hot, dirty, full of rats and cockroaches, and stank of sewage. Huge mosquito-infested lagoon, and too close to the end of the airport runway for comfort. Vlacherna monastery looks nice, but that's it.

rabellocloud · 23/01/2024 21:41

I'm going to Paris next month for 2 nights for a celebration. No grand planned. Await the trip with interest.

mauvish · 23/01/2024 21:41

I can't think of any one place that was so terrible I'd never return. Even if somewhere was underwhelming, there have always been some good experiences there.

I didn't like Venice as much as I'd thought I would. I think that's the only real travel disappointment for me. (Actually I spent a few weeks in Italy about 30 years ago and decided the only way you'd get me back to Italy would be to rid it of Italian men first. But I have been to various places in Italy more recently and it's all been fine. Don't understand how anyone can downrate Garda, the scenery is stunning and you can walk up a mountain then have a vino by the lake - what's not to like?!)

I've been Barcelona many times as my daughter used to live there, and I enjoyed it but we stayed away from the really bad tourist haunts. If you went for a weekend and got mugged on Las Ranblas on your first night, I can see why you'd hate it.

I'd avoid any sunlounger -and-cocktail place as I know I'd hate it so in doing that I've saved myself a lot of anguish!

Florence. It was absolutely heaving with tourists (I was one too!), streets jammed, long queues for everything, and so on. Yes I know it is a stunning city, but once I managed to crawl through a few streets and see the Duomo and the bridge, I was glad to get out. Not a chance of seeing the museums and galleries, even if pre booked, too many people. I've a feeling it's crammed all year round too a bit like Venice I suppose. I'll have to go there in January and get up at six in the morning or something!

However, not too far away is Lucca which is absolutely delightful and charming. I enjoyed it there a lot!

I had nothing like that, I even got to spend a good half an hour in front of the David without another soul around, we walked along empty streets at night, sat in empty churches and didn’t queue for anything, thanks to the blooming freezing weather in the middle of the winter 🤣

But blimey, it was cold… so cold…

badmonkeybananas · 23/01/2024 21:42

San Francisco, Malta, and Rome

TheaBrandt · 23/01/2024 21:42

Also baffled at the Paris hate. We love it teens always ask to go back.

Touty · 23/01/2024 21:43

Barcelona (been many times)

I’ve done this and pissed myself at this comment.

Tombero · 23/01/2024 21:44

I agree with Morocco, a lot of unpleasant, leery attention and a hideous dose of campylobacter.

LadyWiddiothethird · 23/01/2024 21:44

Altinkum in Turkey,hated it.

Hobbesmanc · 23/01/2024 21:45

There's always been something I've enjoyed about all foreign travel. Just been abroad is amazing. But there's places I'd not rush back too. Dubai and Qatar. As expected just a bit soulless and dull. Malta. Just not as nice as other Med islands. Bern and Geneva. Switzerland is gorgeous but it's cities are a little tedious. Singapore fades away in comparison to other Asian cities.

Worst city ever. Manila. You'd have to pay me to stay there again. The rest of the Philippines was lovely.

Medusaismyhero · 23/01/2024 21:45

Sad to see so many people saying Dublin though I do get it. Don't write Ireland off because of it though - Belfast, Derry, Enniskillen in the North are amazing and there are so many amazing places in the South too.

Agree with those saying Rome - it's dirty and graffiti ridden and the people are rude. It's also spectacularly beautiful in some spots.

Love Mallorca but think Ibiza has gone badly downhill in the last 10-15 years. Not the party heaven it used to be.

someon · 23/01/2024 21:45

I don't like Paris been once would not go back it's really was dirty.

I would never go back to Tunisia felt that was dirty and ppl were not that nice
Lisbon went first time was great but second time was meh !
Maldives overrated was a beautiful island but you can get cabin fever if you're that type that likes to go out and about. Saying that I would go again and try another island

Japan I loved went all over and the ppl there are really friendly. I did find the food tricky but I would go back.

This summer I've book a week in Santorini 🙈 I'm trying 2 different hotels one on the beach and another in caves seems it's not that popular !

SantiagoSky · 23/01/2024 21:46

I didn't enjoy Legoland and Disneyland much.
