Family rooms allocated with ignorance

Maybe naive but when booking a family room in a hotel with 2 twins under 2 and room for 2 travel cots you would surely expect a room with bath and not shower? You live and learn that sometimes you deal with idiots. An offer of 'renting' a baby bath added insult to injury to deal with 2 babies and fill it from a shower...Sadly a full hotel and no alternative and unapologetic over a stay cut short and no discount. So it may should silly but double check the room will have a bath when booking stays. I so want to let rip on Trip Advisor but dont want to be blacklisted to stay again minus grandchildren as a very unique resort.

I used to manage a hotel and people like you were the bane of my existence. The only people dealing with idiots in your situation were the poor hotel workers who offered you a solution to a problem caused by you not checking if there was a bath in the room you booked when you booked it!

wintersgold · 01/01/2024 19:19

YABU it's not the hotel's problem how you manage the shower/bath situation. You should have checked and the responsibility lies firmly with you.

After 10 pages of pretty much the same answer, are you still feeling like other people are the obvious idiots in this scenario, OP?

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 01/01/2024 19:21

You are not being unreasonable to have not thought about it - I’ve done the same! But most shower trays work as shallow bath, can normally find a cup to tip water. Ive used a large plastic salad bowl in one self catering place - you are going to get just as wet, may not be easy but absolutely doable.

Danielle9891 · 01/01/2024 19:23

Your being unreasonable OP. It's fairly common now to have a hotel room without a bath. In fact, I think baths in hotels are starting to be seen as old fashioned. I work in a hotel and a few of the older rooms that need updating has baths and it's one of the few complaints we receive. People want showers now. Even the housekeepers have mentioned the baths are never used.

If I'm staying somewhere for the 1 night then my daughter will probably not need a bath but if we're staying longer, I'd take her in the shower with me. When we go on holiday in (both hotels or a static caravan) there's never a bath and if we are stopping for longer than a few days then I'd take a cheap blow up paddling pool from the poundland. It's tiny so it fits under a shower.

GlasgowGal82 · 01/01/2024 19:32

If you want a bath it's on you to check the room has that facility. It sometimes isn't an option and in the past we've taken a big plastic storage box in the boot of our car and have filled that up using the shower to bath baby. Toddlers (and even babies!) can be easily washed in a shower. You are overreacting by cutting short your stay imo.

pollymere · 01/01/2024 19:52

We took our DC into the shower from about six months old! On holiday the wet room was a godsend for getting off sand. If they were dirty you could've popped them in the shower. If not, then why bother anyway? I've never really understood the need to bathe them before bed - it used to make mine way too excited!

fetchacloth · 01/01/2024 19:56

I've been in many different hotels in the last 20 years and very few have had baths.
Hotels these days have showers as they save space and are cheaper to operate. They tick a sustainability box for eco reasons.
Baths are probably reserved for the high end country house hotels sector.

DoughBallss · 01/01/2024 20:07

I really don’t see an issue here, we’ve showered with our babies since they were 6 months old…our 3 year old prefers a shower over a bath most of the time

liveforsummer · 01/01/2024 20:26

I don't think I've ever used the bath in a hotel room even with young dc so it wouldn't occur to me to be bothered. You should definitely have checked if it was a deal breaking requirement as it's not one many have these days

Maternityleavelady · 01/01/2024 22:04

I feel your pain about needing a bath for your little ones, unlike most of the posters. We spend a long time hunting for hotels with baths as our nearly 2 and 4 year old have never had a shower before! I certainly didn’t have showers myself until I was about 9! Bathtime is part of their relaxation routine before bed and very important to us.

Have you ever thought about making their routine a bit more flexible so you can live a bit?

Not having a shower until 9 seems extreme

beanontoast · 01/01/2024 22:28

You live and learn that sometimes you deal with idiots.

The only idiot here is the one who didn’t check what facilities the room had and wants to leave a bad review because of it. Give your head a wobble.

CountessWindyBottom · 01/01/2024 22:40

Personally I love a bath. And when travelling with or without children I’ll normally check if the rooms with/without baths are hugely variant in price. Most city hotels, often relatively high-end ones, only come with showers these days

Fluffmum · 01/01/2024 23:41

Sit them in the sink

Depends how old the poster is. Lots of people in the 70s and 80s didn't have showers, they were a relatively new thing. So maybe her parents didn't have a shower until she was older. Certainly I had friends at school who only had baths in their homes as showers were considered "foreign" and new fangled. A bit like duvets v sheets abd blankets. Although I am sure there are many posters on here now that would never have experienced sheets abd blankets.... [old gimmer]

This is a lesson that comes the hard way. A lot of guests and hotels now consider showers the norm and baths to be old fashioned so they swap.

I love a relaxing, pampering bath whilst away, but I've learned to always check at booking.

I had a colleague who took a relaxing, pampering bath while away and returned with a raging case of tinea on her bum, nether regions, upper thighs etc. Absolutely only way this could have happened was the bath (visiting cold country, wore full layers, never had exposed skin on public transport seats, restaurant seats, kangaroo’d it with toilet seats etc). Took ages to get it under control. I never used a bath that wasn’t mine after that, and even used thongs in hotel showers for over a decade after. To be fair it was a good 40 years ago this happened but I felt so sorry for her, and on the odd occasion I’ve come across a bath in a hotel I’ve given it a wide berth.

I had to look up tinea, but it seems you can get it from towels or sheets.

We live a lot - and it’s never been a problem for us to pay a bit more for the luxury of a bath - the kids love it and we are happy (I love a bath myself so the idea of going on holiday without a bath to chill in doesn’t appeal at all).

I don’t plan to make my kids wait until they are 9 to have a shower - that’s just when I had my first shower!

Hopefully she’s been blacklisted from the unique resort. I doubt this was her own unreasonable behaviour.

You are right @StiffyByngsDogBartholomew - my brother was born in the 70s and I was born in the early 80s so I grew up initially with sheets and blankets and no shower. We got duvets (I remember being so excited when we got these!) and a shower installed when I was 9. Initially I liked having a shower as I felt like a big girl, but after the novelty wore off, I always preferred the bath. I have more showers these days for speed what with having 2 small kids but adore a bath when I get time.

WadiShab · 02/01/2024 10:28

It really is luck of the draw most of the time they have a room category and within that category some have baths and some have showers. Even if you request a bath prior to arrival it is seldom a guarantee. I'd get on TripAdvisor about their poor response and lack of interest regarding the issue if nothing else. I would not concern myself with being " blacklisted".
