Do you feel like you’re wasting money flying business class?

I fly with work and get biz. So it’s hard to go back to normal and fly economy. We earn decent salaries but no way would we ever spend £2-3k of our own dosh on a flight.

We religiously collect avios and upgrade ourselves. But even then the taxes go up so we’re spending the airmiles plus another say £400 in taxes. We take home around £7k a month so £800 in taxes just to fly business class is a lot of money to us.

does anyone else feel the same?

I'm sorry but what language is this you are speaking?!

Torganer · 11/11/2023 21:30

Not me, I also use avios and always go business short haul and either first or business long haul. It takes so much stress out of flying and feels like we start our holiday earlier. These are just my spending priorities though, it has a huge benefit for us.

OhpoorMe · 11/11/2023 21:31

I feel the same. I earn very well but can imagine just spunking money on business or first! I'd rather have an extra holiday.

PictureOfFlorianTray · 11/11/2023 21:52

No.

JustKen · 11/11/2023 21:55

Budget if I'm paying. Business or First if someone else is.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/11/2023 21:57

Economy if paying ourselves. No way am I spending money on it.

YesIAmTired · 11/11/2023 21:58

I prefer premium economy for long haul flights. Still plenty of space for me.

idontlikealdi · 11/11/2023 21:59

No

angsanana · 11/11/2023 22:00

I pay for economy when I'm the one that's paying but I travel a lot for business, and fly prem ec / business when I do, so usually upgraded. Tbh if d rather spend my own money elsewhere

Travelismything · 11/11/2023 22:02

I agree, I earn well but would prefer to spend the £ on an additional weekend break.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/11/2023 22:02

The plane gets there at the same time, regardless what class you're in

I'd also rather go somewhere amazing and rough it than somewhere luxurious so I don't think I'm the target audience.

Janedoe82 · 11/11/2023 22:04

Same monthly take home but no way would we spend thousands on flights. So many other things to spend money on.

AgaMM · 11/11/2023 22:04

I think it’s a waste on short haul flights, as the difference between economy and business is minimal.

Definitely worth it on long haul flights.

LocalHobo · 11/11/2023 22:06

If I cant afford a business class flight, I can't afford the trip. It's non negotiable for me.

DH is the same. He refuses to fly long distance on anything but business class as a minimum. Whereas for me, a luxury hotel is important so that’s my priority.

Tatumm · 11/11/2023 22:10

Even short haul? I don’t fly much now but would go to a maximum of premium economy for long haul, economy for short haul, even when I earned well.

verrymerryberry · 11/11/2023 22:14

I only fly for holidays and flew business for the first time to San Francisco and 1000% worth it. Used Avios and companion voucher

Club world suite, Lounge access lie flat bed and extra hand luggage and extra checked bag all amazing extras you can't pay for individually

Arrived in SF as if I hadn't been in a 12 hour flight it was so quick and the food was divine. Insane amount of foods. Had a really good sleep going despite it being a day flight I was shattered from work. Didn't seek as well coming back despite the night flight. Had an amazing two weeks and the flights really did make it for me. Originally booked premium economy outbound but changed to club world both directions.

Coming back was great too the BA Lounge at SF direct boarding.

Today we booked economy flight to Cyprus using Avios and a voucher for 5.5 economy will be fine I think but dh want to up grade (he's tall and no ex leg room in economy) so might try for a voucher.

When and I was younger economy was fine but I appreciate the luxury as middle age looms.

Also I'm getting g to be a bit of an av geek!

Localhobo that’s a really arrogant thing to say. 😳

ScandiNoirNuit · 11/11/2023 22:14

We earn well, but have never been able to justify the extra for business vs economy. I’d rather spend the significant extra on another holiday or whilst we are away.

we have just started collecting Avios and I’m not sure I’ll use for business, even though that seems to generate more value, I think I’d prefer to put towards more economy trips. Do other people do this? Seems like everyone uses their Avios for business class flights!

Netaporter · 11/11/2023 22:16

I find avios best value for BC short haul as you don’t worry about seat selections and baggage allowances. Long haul we do spend the money on BC - I find I waste less of my holiday overcoming the lack of sleep/change of time zone etc. I’ve found it is better value to add a stop over into the trip which does reduce the cost significantly. Very good article in today’s Times about doing this.

No it’s not. She’s stating a personal preference.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBabyYeahRight · 11/11/2023 22:25

I'd rather fly economy class and either extend my holiday or have a week somewhere else later on in the year.

Janedoe82 · 11/11/2023 22:25

Not sure how saying that if you can’t afford to fly business class you can’t afford to go on holiday isn’t an arrogant thing to say?
Totally out of touch with reality for the majority of people and just makes her sound like a complete twat. Really quite embarrassing 🙈

Because she has a personal preference? That she chooses to make mode of transport a priority in his holiday planning?

How on earth is that twattish and embarrassing. Lots of people go on several low cost holidays a year, whereas others choose to go on one holiday where they splurge. Why is that a problem?

Janedoe82 · 11/11/2023 22:31

It is the smugness that there is no point going if you can’t afford to upgrade.
could just have said thinks it is worth it. But it is derogatory to all those who don’t have that luxury. And in my opinion is an unpleasant thing to say. Would she say in front of someone who she knows could never afford it? If not why say it at all!
