Do you feel like you’re wasting money flying business class?

falindra · 11/11/2023 21:22

I fly with work and get biz. So it’s hard to go back to normal and fly economy. We earn decent salaries but no way would we ever spend £2-3k of our own dosh on a flight.

We religiously collect avios and upgrade ourselves. But even then the taxes go up so we’re spending the airmiles plus another say £400 in taxes. We take home around £7k a month so £800 in taxes just to fly business class is a lot of money to us.

does anyone else feel the same?

It’s actually pretty vile.

G5000 · 11/11/2023 22:32

400 per person for long haul business class I would see as an absolute bargain and well worth it. But generally no, I might splurge on premium on airlines where it's a good one, not business. I earn a lot but still, just booking the trip to San Fran for me and kids - 1.5K in eco, 10K in business. No way, we will manage.

Janedoe82 · 11/11/2023 22:31

It is the smugness that there is no point going if you can’t afford to upgrade.
could just have said thinks it is worth it. But it is derogatory to all those who don’t have that luxury. And in my opinion is an unpleasant thing to say. Would she say in front of someone who she knows could never afford it? If not why say it at all!

For her. That is her preference. No smugness to it.

Why is your opinion any more valid than hers?

Not sure how saying that if you can’t afford to fly business class you can’t afford to go on holiday isn’t an arrogant thing to say?
Totally out of touch with reality for the majority of people and just makes her sound like a complete twat. Really quite embarrassing 🙈

Are you reading the right post? It's entirely up to Hobo how she chooses to travel and very weird that you feel at liberty to police here travel choices

Very odd response. She stated what she personally prefers on a thread about travel preferences and Jane Doe is acting like she admitted to torturing baby animals.

More embarrassing how you’ve latched onto this and posted about it four times! That poster is stating her own preferences not how anyone else should travel! We also factor business class into the cost of any of our long haul holidays, doesn’t make us arrogant dicks😂

LunaTheCat · 11/11/2023 22:37

I have just flown Economy from NZ to Europe and back… a special version of hell ! Business Class flights for 2 £12000 currently!
I have flown business pre covid when long haul much cheaper… it was amazing but not worth current cost.

G5000 · 11/11/2023 22:37

nothing wrong with only flying business class if that's the poster's preference. I can also say that I personally won't go on a holiday at all if it involves camping, that doesn't make it arrogant and out of touch.

RunningFromInsanity · 11/11/2023 22:39

Anything over 8hrs is business class for me now.
1-2hours- I’d fly economy and wouldn’t even pay to
book a seat.
2+hours - paying for premium or extra leg room.

user1471548941 · 11/11/2023 22:41

It depends. We have similar income and both travel business for work- DH more than me.

Recent holiday to North America we booked in the BA Premium Sale and managed to get a great deal on business to our chosen destination (end of season). We went out Premium economy which I generally find a real sweet spot, often only a hundred or so more and well worth it for things like seat allocation and extra leg room for 6,4 DH. Price of business probably would have been wasted for a not too long day time flight. We get lounge access anyway due to DH member status.

Transatlantic flight home overnight with work the next day? Well worth the money we paid in the sale as it meant a night’s sleep over missing a night completely. I think we’d also try and upgrade to business if flying east on the way out, in order to beat jetlag and get on with our holiday quicker. We didn’t when going out to the Maldives as the plan was to laze on the beach all week and it was thousands rather than hundreds. However our next trip is to Singapore so much longer, overnight flight and a “busy” holiday schedule so will increase the flight budget in order to get our holiday going quicker!

Ihatethenewlook · 11/11/2023 22:41

It is completely pathetic that there are people in the world that would turn their nose up at a holiday abroad if their flight isn’t luxurious enough

gotomomo · 11/11/2023 22:42

Premium economy if it's not too much more

StSwithinsDay · 11/11/2023 22:43

Depends on length of journey. Less than 4 hours economy. Anything longer then business or first.

NeverHadHaveHas · 11/11/2023 22:44

Saying business class is a non-negotiable for her isn’t a reflection on how she feels about people who can’t afford to pay for it. It’s just the same as people saying they would rather not go on holiday if they could only afford to go to a 2* hotel in Magaluf 🤷‍♀️

PegasusReturns · 11/11/2023 22:46

I normally fly business class, but I do have a limit at which I just won’t do it. It’s more the principle than the actual cost.

we recently had a family weekend in NYC, the flights were £11k, so we were in premium economy.

I read the same post.

If I cant afford a business class flight, I can't afford the trip. It's non negotiable for me.

I guess that poster is extremely high maintenance compared to me. I can think of far better ways to spend the ££££ not splurged on a few hours on a plane.

Jk987 · 11/11/2023 22:48

For long haul it's worth it if you can get a good deal. In 2019 I went Business class to Cairns, Australia for £2,400. A long stop in Shanghai but worth it to lie flat and for the hospitality.
I wouldn't bother for a trip to Europe.

AtomicPumpkin · 11/11/2023 22:48

No, because I don't do it.

TerrysNeapolitan · 11/11/2023 22:50

If the plane takes off in aeroplane shape. And lands in aeroplane shape. To be that is a successful flight. If it goes down. Doesn't matter where you are sitting love. 👍

SiobhanSharpe · 11/11/2023 22:51

I haven’t flown for a couple of years as I’m really not keen on it (despite flying regularly all my life since i was a tiny baby) but I find BC makes it far less of an ordeal for me.
I am very bad at dealing with crowds so a quick and quiet check-in, fast track security and a peaceful airport lounge are bliss, likewise early boarding before the throngs of people get on. Luckily we can afford it.
But I love Brittany Ferries ships to Spain, we go every year, just load up the car — no worries about luggage restrictions. It’s relaxed and civilised.

jay55 · 11/11/2023 22:53

Within Europe I suck it up and fly budget airlines.
Long haul I pay up for business and try to book during sales if I don't have the points.

Chickydoo · 11/11/2023 22:53

I fly longhaul a fair amount. I always fall asleep on planes so anything other than economy would be wasted on me.

And that’s you. You probably spend money on things I don’t value.
Me, personally, I only really spend my money on holidays, so I’m happy to spend extra on making the flight super comfortable.

But some would rather be laying down on a bed during that flight that sitting upright touching people on either side.
There isn’t a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to fly, but there is a comfortable v uncomfortable way.

HappyMavis · 11/11/2023 23:02

Silly and unfair to call the OP smug, they've openly shared their take home pay and it's not particularly impressive, and I would say is around the bare minimum to consider an occasional self-funded business class treat.

I personally prefer luxury cruising, but have the time to do so, unlike the salaried OP, and again this just shows them to be open regarding their limitations rather than smug.

I take biz class when flying, except for short haul, for example when flying to Jersey it really is pointless.

Those of you being rude, don't forget there are other benefits/reasons such as a chauffeur and the private lounge services. Keep it up OP, you should always stretch to the life you aspire to as one day you might just make it!
