DD's suitcase lost at Greek airport - DEVASTATED!!

Kiki105 · 20/08/2023 12:37

My 19 year old DD has just arrived in Zante with 2 friends for their first girly holiday. Her friends have collected their suitcases but DD's suitcase didn't show or maybe someone collected it by mistake. She's reported it to the TUI rep and is now on the coach travelling to the hotel. She's absolutely distraught and in tears. Does anyone have any experience of this happening to them and the likelihood of her case being found within a short time. She has got absolutely nothing else on her other than the leggings and hoodie she travelled in. I'm feeling so stressed and helpless right now.

OP posts:

Dear me, if she’s this dramatic is she mature enough to be on holiday by herself!?

Thisweeksname · 20/08/2023 13:28

I hope the suitcase turns up OP, ignore the nasty digs, I would be upset as well. I can imagine as a teen I would’ve cried in this situation. Girls spend ages planning outfits and makeup/hair and to have nothing and be stuck in a foreign country is scary. She’ll definitely be able to get some things in shops, Zante has loads of places to buy things. Hope she still has a fab holiday 😊

Ohyesreally · 20/08/2023 13:28

It won't help in this instance but for the future, it's ALWAYS good to pack a selection of bits to last a day or two in your hand luggage just in case this happens!

I hope she gets reunited with her case soon.

She needs to stop being such a wet-wipe drama queen, quite frankly. The reps will have dealt with this sort of thing countless times. She can borrow off her mates, and pick up some cheap stuff from local shops.

Oh for heaven's sake. A lost suitcase on a trip abroad is a big deal for a young person. Hopefully it will turn up.

LondonLovie · 20/08/2023 13:30

Nightmare.

But she'll be okay. Borrow matesmake up and clothes. Go and buy a bikini.

It should turn up

my82my · 20/08/2023 13:31

Friend of a friend works for TUI.. was chatting to her about this last week at a bbq. She said they normally if they are found at Gatwick they get sent out on the next flight.
I know someone who AirTags her suitcase. Seems like a good idea, hopefully it's found soon.

I just think it’s a shame that a girl in the prime of her life can’t enjoy herself and have fun without a suitcase full of new outfits. I know that’s how she feels, but it’s just sad. She can borrow or buy things. I hope she can have a fantastic holiday.

You don’t know it’s a suitcase full of new clothes. Maybe it’s old clothes, medication, contact lenses, books for uni, phone charger. Etc.

@user1471447924

I don't see a 19 year old getting tearful over a missing suitcase a sign of immaturity. It is understandable at that age.

Devastated? C'mon

I absolutely would have been.

19
First girls holiday
Just you and your mates
All that "holiday shopping " you've done

Of course you would be.

OP fingers crossed her stuff turns up soon.

We've recently had a case lost coming home on a TUI flight. Hopefully your experience is better than ours but the overwhelming feeling we got from them was We've Had Your Money And Now We Couldn't Give A Shit.

Some nasty vipers out today on various threads , not just this one . She’s 19 on holiday with her friends and her case has gone missing ! She’s allowed to be upset and her mum isn’t with her ! It does make a difference , hope it turns up for her tonight

Doteycat · 20/08/2023 13:34

Ah bless, sure its horrible when shit happens like that. But sadly thats part of being a grown up - shit happens. What she needs now from you is the how to deal with it part. Freak out and be gutted and let it ruin the holiday, or girl-up and roll with the punches. Its ok to be gutted but u gotta go with, ok go get yourself a nice bikini and a cocktail and a laugh with your mates, its just stuff. Its shit, but its just stuff and it will probably turn up. Dotn let it ruin her holiday cos that is a TOTAL waste then. Sure it could all turn up tmro and you wont hear a word then cos she will be on her merry way.

Do you spend much time around 19 yr olds planning hols in Zante?

Daisymaybe60 · 20/08/2023 13:35

It happened to me in China, when we arrived for a 3 week tour but my case didn’t. It’d gone back to Frankfurt on the Lufthansa plane, then was sent back out again. Fortunately just an hour before we left Beijing our rep got a call to say it was at the airport. Thrown in a massive room with hundreds of other lost cases stacked floor to ceiling. It was just by sheer good luck that we found it. Smile

Since then I’ve always a) packed a few essentials and a couple of outfits in my carry-on, b) shared cases 50/50 with whoever I’m travelling with. c) bought a bright case that’s easy to spot. Insurance is a must, of course.

Hope it turns up soon, OP - I can understand your DD being upset, but at least she’s got you to calm her down and help sort out the practicalities.

You’d be pretty daft to put essentials that you can’t replace like medication and contact lenses in your checked bag.

JusthereforXmas · 20/08/2023 13:36

I have never traveled with checked in luggage and have gone away for 2 weeks before fitting it all in a carry sized on wheelybag and had more outfits than needed. Also gone away with kids with everything in hand luggage.

Unless your going skiing or something what do people need thats so bulky it needs checking in.

Surely everyone is aware bags go missing, why not have all your 'needed' items (chargers, id, money, medications) and a few outfits in your hand luggage?

my82my · 20/08/2023 13:36

🙄🙄🙄 At all the bitchy comments your getting!!!
Hopefully your daughters stuff turns up soon. Both of my teens have been abroad with friends this year.. planning what they were going to wear was a big deal to them too.

limitedperiodonly · 20/08/2023 13:36

I bet it will turn up within 48 hours. It's happened to me four times going out and once coming back, which obviously wasn't bad because by that time I knew it would probably turn up.

It's always in August because airports are so busy. It probably never left the starting airport and will get put on the next flight and delivered to her hotel. If she's staying in an apartment she might have to go and get it because that might be more secure.

Next time, she should split things with her friends so they all have something of their own. Also put your name, phone number and flight details inside the case. Luggage labels sometimes get torn off the outside. If the worst comes to the worst, they break into cases and reunite you with them if they find the details. They really do. But make sure it's a phone number with an international dialling code, not a home address that might be empty.

And yes, I know it's not like dying of cancer or in a plane crash but it is devastating when you are that age and think about all the things you planned to wear on your exciting holiday. If it happens to me again at my advanced age I'll be pretty cheesed off because like many people I like my clothes and don't want to borrow anyone else's - particularly not my husband's. He wouldn't be thrilled at wearing mine either.

If it makes you happy to travel with just a spare pair of knickers and a cossie in a backpack then whoopee for you. It would be so boring if we were all the same, wouldn't it?

If she’s in holiday as an adult she can sort it out

Why are people such cunts I wonder?

Cheeseandlobster · 20/08/2023 13:36

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 20/08/2023 13:21

This.

People are dying in climate disasters.

Odfod

If we were only allowed to feel upset about climate change this board for one would be very dull. The op knows that there are worse things out there but a 19 year old is entitled to feel distressed that all those lovely outfits she planned for her long awaited holiday have been lost. Jeez

PlumPeony · 20/08/2023 13:37

Does her travel insurance cover anything for lost luggage?

GoFaster83 · 20/08/2023 13:37

Yep. Devastated. 24 hours of that holiday at least is without the belongings she packed and paid for to be delivered safely. Good for you if you can afford another holiday to make up for it later in the year. Good for you if your friends packed enough underwear to share. Good for you if your pals are the same clothes size. But I know many people for whom this situation would be devastating.

Hope she's OP

Cmon, you know once you turn 16 you are NEVER allowed ask for help from ANYONE.
I mean whats next, a forum where people go to ask for advice or suggestions on all sorts. Cop yourself on.

Mariposista · 20/08/2023 13:38

Borrow off friends, buy a cheap bikini and crack on. It’s not nice, but not the end of the world - it will turn up.
Time for a bit of resilience.

Fizbosshoes · 20/08/2023 13:39

I'm pretty surprised at all the harsh comments. Considering how 90% of MN can't wear an outfit for an entire day without having to shower twice and wash the outfit, being stuck in a hot country with only the clothes you're standing in is pretty upsetting by anyone's standards. As I mentioned this happened to me recently. Of course toothbrush etc is easy to buy a new one. My choices for borrowing a bikini were from someone size 4 or someone size 12, and if you're going to a tourist destination the shops to buy stuff like underwear are pretty limited, and /or overpriced. I felt like we wasted the first day just trawling shops looking for clothes to wear!
