Rhodes next week - are we mad?

We’re due to go to Rhodes next Wednesday for a week. Staying in an all insclusive on the east coast with a 6 year old. Lots of pools, air conditioned rooms and on the beach. Are we mad?

People we know have just returned from Rhodes today and say it’s much hotter than is being reported in the press/on forecasts.

Will we be ok as long as we stay in the resort, by the pool and inside during the hottest parts of the day?

Back from Rhodes a couple of days ago, no locals even mentioned the fires although we did see it mentioned on the Greek TV. It's only certain parts.

Temperature wise, it was way over 40 degrees. Never known anything like it! The local shop keeper said it was much hotter than normal and she was struggling herself.

We had a TUI holiday cancelled (by them) 2 days before a few months ago and they offered either a refund, credit for a future holiday or to chose anything from the brochure for immediate booking for same value. We were actually very impressed with the customer service.

I have a lot of sympathy for the residents and businesses in the affected areas right now.

Possibility of my kids being able to go swap to a different country during the summer holiday with a few days notice?

blacknredsweeties · 22/07/2023 19:59

Sorry that was a question 😂

NumberSeven7 · 23/07/2023 06:54

Fortunately we’re 30 mins away from the fires and upwind of the smoke. The sky turned an ominous shade of orange yesterday evening though.

The heat is intense. Too hot to be out in the middle of the day, although a lot of fellow tourists don’t seem to agree. There’s some cracking sunburn around the pool!

Definitely too hot to go on any trips but between the air conditioned hotel, pools and sea it’s fine.

The fires only started on Tuesday and were quite small. It only became a problem when the winds picked up and then changed direction yesterday. It’s very windy on the island at the moment.

I am meant to be going to the Atlantica holiday village but am worried given the news it is going to get cancelled.

Thats next door to our hotel. It’s a long way from the fire. You should be fine.

Bring lots of sun cream. It’s €26 euros in the local shops!

You’ll be fine
some people have to work in it

Yes, and those people who have to work in it also think it’s far too hot. Nothing about these temperatures is normal or safe. It’s not meant to be over 40 degrees or on fire. This is global warming.

You’re not wrong about the global warming - isn’t it ironic though that all the tourists who are in Rhodes at the moment have contributed massively to GW by jumping on a big fuel guzzling aeroplane to get there!

Yes, very ironic. But this is our first overseas holiday in over 5 years so I’m not feeling too guilty about it. We also don’t drive so we’re doing pretty well in terms of our carbon footprint.

I can't see an update from TUI.

I know a holiday isn't important with everything that is happening but if people have had to save years to go away and their kids are excited then it is disappointing.

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/07/2023 10:11

The authorities, the holiday companies and airlines will make sure those people whose holidays are affected are looked after. My thoughts are with the locals whose homes and livelihoods are being destroyed.

blacknredsweeties · 23/07/2023 10:18

I've not looked at the news. I've only read what's on here.

Donotshushme · 23/07/2023 10:36

Always astounds me when people are more worried about their holiday, when people's homes and livelihoods could be burning to the ground.

FoodieToo · 23/07/2023 10:42

Hi OP. We stayed there last summer and two years before that also .
Air con in rooms is excellent - I woke up frozen every morning 😂😂!
Air con in main restaurant is poor - I assume just because of the sheer volume of people and the heat of cooking.
The a la carte are mainly outdoors.
Loads of pool and fab water park .
Spend time at the swim up bar , it’s gorgeous.
Just retreat to your room regularly.

PuttingDownRoots · 23/07/2023 10:58

Tui have cancelled outgoing flights for next few days

WeAreTheHeroes · 23/07/2023 11:08

Tui are probably doing what Jet2 are - cancelling outbound flights, but still flying the planes out in order to repatriate those people who have been evacuated.

Aww that’s nice. When you have finished polishing your halo perhaps you might consider it is possible to be both worried about the holiday you have saved for and to which your kids are looking forward and concerned about the effect of wildfires and that posting on a forum to ask questions about the former does not mean you do not care about the latter.

blacknredsweeties · 23/07/2023 11:35

@Barbadosgirl Thank you.

Don’t worry. Some of us realise it is possible to care about more than one thing at once! 🙄 Of course you feel bad for your daughter and your grandchildren.

Barbadosgirl · 23/07/2023 13:36

If your daughter is with TUI then they have now updated so that anyone flying Weds 26th or Thurs 27th can change their holiday for free. Am on the phone to them now.

Hi. It's actually my sister and my two daughters. Yes she's online looking to book somewhere else thank you.
