Rhodes next week - are we mad?

We’re due to go to Rhodes next Wednesday for a week. Staying in an all insclusive on the east coast with a 6 year old. Lots of pools, air conditioned rooms and on the beach. Are we mad?

People we know have just returned from Rhodes today and say it’s much hotter than is being reported in the press/on forecasts.

Will we be ok as long as we stay in the resort, by the pool and inside during the hottest parts of the day?

I assume you lose all your money if you don’t go?

Or can you rearrange for a small fee

If not I’d go

We did Rhodes with a toddler and the heat was too much for her at the time, but I’d still go now she’s older (nearly 6)

Caspianberg · 17/07/2023 12:17

We are living in southern Europe. It’s actually not that bad if you can stay out of day heat and not go rushing around.
On holiday people don’t have anywhere urgent to go, so just relax.

My sons Nursery still when out today early whilst cool), there’re no air con indoors either ( or at our hours or most people we know either). But awnings out, shade. I did yoga outside first thing. We will stay mainly indoors with trips out into garden shade paddling pool and water play for toddler. You will have hotel pool. We have been taking him most evenings for a walk or playground 7pm onwards when it’s cooler and it’s been busy at the park at that time. So I suggest similar with your 6 year old and do park/ town wander around 7/8pm.

Oh I take that back - BBC says 37/38 for two days.

But there is also the ‘feels like’ temp which could be quite a few degrees higher than the actual temp.

I think my biggest concern is getting out of the air conditioned plane onto the tarmac in 40 degree heat. I’ve heard the airport isn’t air conditioned and I don’t know if the buses from the plane to the terminal are air conditioned.

I was in Rhodes a few days ago.

The buses from the plane to the terminal are not AC but the terminal building is . But the journey takes about 3 mins, it’s not a huge airport.

In the resort - just get up early - Id be at breakfast when it starts at 7am and then relax in your room 12-3.

Drink lots of water and no alcohol in the day. Save that for the evening.

Loose cotton/ linen clothing is much better than skin tight Lycra crop top and shorts .

Make sure your child has a rash vest, hat and shorts on in the pool and on the beach. Yes even if you bought them a cute bikini with Princess slogans on it Hmm.

Take some pool toys for your child , like sticks they can dive for, inflatable and small soft balls.

You don’t need more sunscreen that normal - you don’t get more burned at 42 degrees than at 32 degrees. But you do need factor 50 esp for your child. It feels hotter than usual because there is no wind, usually Rhodes iswindy .

Caspianberg · 17/07/2023 12:37

One thing I do suggest is make sure you and child have easy on off shoes for outside around pool or on balcony. I just nippe do it to hang laundry on our balcony and the tiles were burning hot even with socks on. Probably crocs of similar for child so they can get wet

What is mad is booking a summer holiday somewhere known to be hot, then considering cancelling & losing all the money you have paid because of the temperature?

I'm genuinely surprised at the replies saying about requesting refunds, surely this is the chance you take when you book a holiday?

I’m not considering cancelling.

Think not what climate change will do for your holiday flight, but what your holiday flight will do for climate change

We haven’t flown on holiday for 5 years so I’m not feeling too guilty about my carbon footprint.

gingercat02 · 22/07/2023 18:01

Sending thoughts to anyone out there, and hoping you're safe.

ThexFallxIsxSkying · 22/07/2023 18:08

blacknredsweeties · 22/07/2023 18:10

My kids are going with TUI Wednesday. What will
Happen if it's cancelled? I'd be gutted for them.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 22/07/2023 18:14

Hope you’re ok OP.

Surely keeping them safe is more important than they being gutted?

Greek news here in English. https://www.ekathimerini.com/

Google maps also has a wildfire setting so you can see where the fires are near. The authorities are experienced in dealing with wildfires, particularly in the mountains. The Valley of Butterflies has a devastating fire some years ago.

Just seen the news and feel sick. We are meant to be going on Wednesday with TUI too and I see the fires are spreading up the coast. We are a bit more to the North but am really worried

blacknredsweeties · 22/07/2023 18:40

@Moodflump If it's not safe I'd assume they wouldn't be able to go.

You’ll be fine
some people have to work in it

We’re staying at the Atlantica Aegean blue, so just up the coast from Lindos. We have no plans to attempt any trips sadly. I was really looking forward to seeing the accropolis.

The Atlantica hotels are fabulous.

Barbadosgirl · 22/07/2023 19:16

I am meant to be going to the Atlantica holiday village but am worried given the news it is going to get cancelled.

PuttingDownRoots · 22/07/2023 19:17

We had a TUI holiday cancelled (by them) 2 days before a few months ago and they offered either a refund, credit for a future holiday or to chose anything from the brochure for immediate booking for same value. We were actually very impressed with the customer service.

I have a lot of sympathy for the residents and businesses in the affected areas right now.
