Rhodes next week - are we mad?

We’re due to go to Rhodes next Wednesday for a week. Staying in an all insclusive on the east coast with a 6 year old. Lots of pools, air conditioned rooms and on the beach. Are we mad?

People we know have just returned from Rhodes today and say it’s much hotter than is being reported in the press/on forecasts.

Will we be ok as long as we stay in the resort, by the pool and inside during the hottest parts of the day?

I presume you are not very well travelled?

Wow.

Worldgonecrazy · 17/07/2023 06:46

I have been various places with similar temperatures, sometimes with no air con. Do any strenuous stuff early morning, move more slowly, drink lots of water. Have a lovely holiday!

bladebladebla1 · 17/07/2023 06:46

We had this here last year didn't we? Surely it's a lot better when you're away in pool and sea and not working. If we handled it here you'll handle it there. Chill, it's just hot

Eurydice84 · 17/07/2023 06:49

I have just come back from Rhodes - we were there until Thursday last week so admittedly a bit cooler than it is now, but still mid 30s. I think you would be fine as long as you keep by the pool/sea, take plenty of shade breaks (esp in the hottest hours of the day), wear a hat and drink loads. Avoid excursions at peak times, and be careful with Lindos or avoid altogether - it is much hotter than the rest of the island due to a geographical quirk, which means it doesn't get any wind!

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 17/07/2023 06:51

My daughter is in Zante at the moment. Her and her friend are getting up early for sea swimming and then keeping near the shade and going in the pools a lot. Plenty of high factor sun cream, hats and stuff to protect them. Yesterday it was 33 degrees at 2pm (so not as hot as being reported) and she said it was pretty unbearable. She took a little fan that's which has helped if she's gone to any places without aircon.

Have you been able to speak to the Travel Agent, to see if they are allowing customers to postpone due to the circumstances?

The circumstances that it is hot in summer??

I don’t tend to travel to hot countries at the height of summer

Then why Rhodes in July? Get up early, have a siesta, then stay up late. The UK press love to make the worst of it.

I presume you are not very well mannered?

We are currently on a Greek island, it’s hot but manageable. We are spending more time in the pool/shade than usual and being careful to drink lots of water. We haven’t attempted any day trips, it’s too hot to be moving around, but quite a few tourist attractions are closed.

What was you hoping to achieve from this post? I hope it made you feel better if that was the intention.

Hobbesmanc · 17/07/2023 07:41

Lindos town is lovely but it's always rammed during the day and the cramped narrow streets just retain the heat. The acropolis is wonderful but unless you go really early of last thing in the evening, it can be a miserable experience. It's a climb up ( do not get one of those poor donkeys) with no shade and awful queues.

I'd avoid town completely and till the evening. It's also a very steep trek down, the bus is hot and rammed and the taxi queue to get home might deter families.

Rhodes is fabulous but high summer visitors should focus on enjoying the amenities of an air conned hotel. Get shade. Plenty of cold drinks and don't try to walk anywhere from mid morning till late afternoon.

MissyB1 · 17/07/2023 07:44

We are off to mainland Greece (but on the coast) on Wednesday. I’m slightly apprehensive about the heat but we will just swim a lot (which we always do anyway). Will stay in the shade a lot and drink loads of water. I’m still looking forward to my holiday!

This is not aimed at you OP but a general comment. What exactly is the point of going on holiday when you have to sit inside the hotel most of the day and can’t go out exploring or walking anywhere - can’t even sit on the beach? It doesn’t sound fun at all.

If you look at the average temperatures it would ordinarily be fine.

There is a heatwave extreme at the moment which was likely not known at the time of booking.

That's like saying "what's the point of going on holiday to the beautiful Welsh countryside if it rains so hard all week that you can't see any of the views". The point is that you didn't know that the weather was going to be disastrous when you booked. Presumably the OP didn't book last week - though tbf Rhodes in July was always going to be a strange choice if you don't like the heat even in average but rather.

AnxiousPixie · 17/07/2023 08:08

We're in Malta at the moment about 38/40. It's fine in the shade/by the pool. Our 5yo and 8yo are loving it. Just making them keep their swim vests on so they are covered and making sure they drink lots. Pretty sure a full day of sight seeing would be a bit much but we have been out for the odd half day and it's fine. Enjoy.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 17/07/2023 08:09

Well, southern Europe in July and August is always really hot. Recent years, even more so. And posters were talking as if this was a habitual way to be on holiday.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 17/07/2023 08:10

Eg ‘it’s fine’!

Isthatyoudoris · 17/07/2023 08:15

We are in Rhodes. Staying in an inclusive hotel. It is hot but the rooms are very cool, beach has a nice breeze and been dipping in the pool.
Make sure you drink lots of water and loads of suncream. I bought my 3 dc's a rash vest each in one of the supermarkets. They are amazing and like a sun/water proof t-shirt. They haven't taken them off since being in the sea/pool. We went to Rhodes old town on Thursday and it was 42c. Very hot but the restaurant had aircon.
Enjoy your holiday OP. Just keep hydrated. Also, wear a hat. My DC's are all very blonde so they have been wearing hats all the time. Wished we could stay longer but home tomorrow.

Soapyspuds · 17/07/2023 08:24

Can anybody else see these 48oC forecasts on any actual weather forecasts? I have looked at various sources and they all top out at 42oC. Where are the media getting 48 from?

Different forecasts vary wildly because they get their data from different sources. Met office says max 40 degrees in Rhodes this week, BBC says 37 max.

Get up early, take a decent walk before breakfast, swim then retire to the shade/aircon spaces, nap in pm then stay up late - it's often that hot in Spain, 42 when I last was in Madrid

TheChosenTwo · 17/07/2023 08:28

The only thing I’d consider is if you’d get your money back by cancelling due to heat.
I have no idea, I’d guess not unless there was official advice stating not to travel there.
If the choices were

  • lose all the money and not be able to rebook anywhere thus losing my holiday totally
and -go on the holiday and be a bit hot i’d be going on holiday.
TheChosenTwo · 17/07/2023 08:30

That was formatted correctly before I posted!

TheFlis12345 · 17/07/2023 08:32

When I went to Rhodes many years ago, a local told me it is always 5-10 degrees hotter than most weather forecasts because they only monitor the temperature from one point on the island (near the airport if I recall correctly?) where it is cooler than most of the towns.
