would love to know which you enjoyed most and would go back to again

I'd go to Madrid annually if there weren't so many other places I've not been to yet. It's the one I've visited most, and over the longest time. First visit 1986, last one last year. It just pulsates with life.

As pp, much prefer it to Barcelona.

Other Spanish cities I love are Salamanca, which is perfection, and Toledo.

Brussels definitely not to be laughed at or underestimated. Went four years ago and bloody loved it. So much to do and see.

I live in Italy, and my favourites would be Rome, Florence, Siena, Verona. Can take or leave both Venice and Bologna.

Enjoyed Lisbon.

Bellagio in Lake Como. Breathtaking.

Porto just had a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and for such a small city there's a lot to see, we did 3 nights as most people recommend 2-3 but could have stayed longer. Plus the port caves over in Gaia (yes Port isn't actually from Porto!) are great, I've never been a Port drinker but I'm a huge fan now. We are planning on going back some time as it was so easy to get there and cheap too and so we can take hold luggage this time and bring more Port home.

Florence although Venice should he only list because I've been 3 times Wink

Valladolid - the best (and cheapest) food & wine, fab food market, barely hear an English voice.
Great base for exploring the area.

San Sebastián - ticks ALL my holiday boxes - beach(es), beautiful buildings, incredible food & wine, gorgeous river, endless walks, lots to see & do in and around the area

Beachywave · 15/05/2023 21:24

Porto - I went in February, would love to revisit in Summer
Likewise Budapest

Krakow - absolutely loads to do there and really reasonable to eat and drink.

Should have said that we went to both last year, and are breaking our rule, and going back to both this year!

Both very different, but both wonderful.

Yeah this exactly.
I haven't been to many cities though (compared to all the world travellers on here) and I just felt so relaxed, no compunction to rush about doing things.

I didn't like Paris or Rome, dirty, touristy and overcrowded although the 'sights' were amazing. And my least favourite for the same reason.. Amsterdam!

MissAmbrosia · 15/05/2023 21:27

San Sebastian is on my bucket list. I didn't like Porto very much but not sure why. Maybe because it lacked the Spanish type evening atmosphere. Lisbon was nice. Salamanca is amazing as per pp, and Segovia also. I still prefer Barcelona to Madrid, despite the crowds. But you can't beat Andalucia. Seville, Granada, Cordoba, Ronda, Cadiz etc.

For people who have been, I will have one day in Cannes in July, I'm deciding between staying in Cannes, taking the train to Nice, or the train further on to Monte Carlo?

It's funny isn't it, one of our favourite things about Porto was the relaxed European evenings sat drinking wine!

snowlady4 · 15/05/2023 21:59

London is my true love.
But Budapest is a wonderful city break, really something for everyone and super cheap if you're used to other city prices!

On a cruise? Monte Carlo is too far and there’s not much to do for a casual visitor. I’d go to Antibes or Villefranche sur Mer on the train. Both very pretty and traditional and have a nice beach. Lots of cute places to eat and shop.
