Anybody else really boring on holiday?

BG2015 · 09/04/2023 23:34

We're currently on holiday in Mexico. It's amazing, fabulous hotel and just loving our time here. Both mid fifties and done the holidays with mates plus holidays with young and then teenage kids. Our time now.

Explored the area, day on the beach and done a couple of trips but our day to day is pretty boring really.

We're early risers so breakfast is 7-7.30am. Down by the pool by 8am. Early morning sun and the quiet is bliss. The noise of the animals and birds so different to the U.K. birdsong.

Couple of iced coffees when the bar opens at 10am. Reading, listening to music, swim. Lunch at 1 ish and afternoon, few cocktails and back to the book under the shade.

Evening meal at the a la cartes around 7pm, last drink in the bar and we're back in our room by 9pm.

We just can't seem to extend our evenings. We're both quite happy with this, don't think I could stay up until 11pm.

Anyone else in a similar holiday vibe?

Not boring. Currently in Spain. DP, me and DPs brother and teenage niece. Been out doing lots during the day. Last night all knackered and in bed for 10pm. I just got up and all snoring away.

YukoandHiro · 10/04/2023 06:52

I'm at the young DC stage and that sounds glorious to me. Also I'm an early riser but my DH likes a lay in so I'm quite envious of that pattern for both of you too.

itsgettingweird · 10/04/2023 06:53

Sounds bliss.

Reading, nice weather, nice food.

No housework to do and say to day errands.

That's my idea of a holiday!

DustyLee123 · 10/04/2023 06:55

Sounds perfect to me. I’m always in bed by 10pm, wherever I am.

DustyLee123 · 10/04/2023 06:56

My DH always lies in as long as possible, so I’d say you’re lucky to have one that gets up early with you.

Shivermytimber · 10/04/2023 06:58

This sounds like heaven to me. I think what you want from your holiday depends on what life you have out of holiday.
My normal life is work approx 50 hours per week, run 30 miles, dog walk 20 miles, 6 cardio classes. I’m knackered. Holiday for me is all about resting in the sun, reading books and afternoon naps.
hmmm reading that back maybe I need to reassess my life a bit 🤣

dimpleton · 10/04/2023 06:59

I think the whole point of holidays is doing what makes YOU happy.

I couldn't lie around a pool all day, I'd be bored stiff. My ideal holiday involves going out exploring in the morning, having lunch out, then chilling by the pool in the afternoon. I'm with you on the early nights, I have no interest in staying up late drinking! Everyone wants different things and if you come back feeling relaxed and happy, job done.

TizerorFizz · 10/04/2023 07:29

I’m amazed at how many people don’t have any interest in the country they are visiting beyond a local town and the beach. Mexico has plenty to see. The Caribbean islands too. We always travel in the country we are going too. I guess it’s the difference between wanting to actually see the best a country has to offer and flopping in one place.

Girlintheframe · 10/04/2023 07:29

We are the same age as you op and this type of holiday would drive me mad. I want to go somewhere new and experience as much of it as I can. Maybe a couple of hours lying by the pool/beach max but that would be it.

This thread got quite far without someone ferling compelled to be a dick. Nice of you to show up and put a stop to all that.

A holiday means different things to different people, and it's about doing what makes you feel happy and relaxed, or indeed energised and stimulated, depending why you're going. As long as you feel you've got what you wanted from the break, then that's all good. Luckily for the tourism industry, different people want different things.

C1239 · 10/04/2023 07:47

Sounds lovely OP!

No, it's you who has spoilt the tone of the thread by calling someone a dick. Uncalled for, they were just contributing to the discussion.

We've got two holidays planned this year. First one we'll be visiting 2 US cities so the days will be full on - sightseeing and people watching.

The second will be similar to OP's with fewer cocktails but later nights as I love sitting out on a warm evening.

mdh2020 · 10/04/2023 08:24

I love this sort of holiday. DD and I do it once every year and it’s a real tonic and pick me up. However, I do have other trips which are busier and more active.

Disco2023 · 10/04/2023 08:28

It’s not my kind of holiday, i like exploring. so I would find it boring.

However it’s what you enjoy, it’s your holiday. You do what you like. It sounds very relaxing and you get to spend lots of time together. So if you enjoy it carry on! It doesn’t matter what others think @BG2015

Oblomov23 · 10/04/2023 08:33

Sounds heavenly.

BucolicBliss · 10/04/2023 08:47

Love Mexico!! We had a fabulous hol there pre pandemic. The most memorable thing for us were the trips - swimming w whale sharks, swimming w turtles, Sian Kaan biosphere, swimming in cenotes.

swimming theme lol

But interspersed with a few days like yours is perfect for us.

ZeroWorshipHere · 10/04/2023 08:54

Laying by the pool in the morning quiet listening to the bird calls sounds like absolute heaven to me. Fuck staying up late when you can experience that early morning freshness being up when nobody else is

Wow that’s harsh! That reply was absolutely fine!

I think everyone is different. I’d like a combination of lots of lazy days and the odd trip out seeing local stuff. Personally I wouldn’t want to go all the way to Mexico without doing at least a couple of local sight seeing things but fair enough if people aren’t bothered!

Turmerictolly · 10/04/2023 09:02

Each to his own I guess but I'm also puzzled why you would go that far to laze in a beach resort.

We usually get up late around 9.30, have a leisurely breakfast and sunbathe until lunch then spend the afternoons exploring, trips, etc. in bed by 11pm. We went on a round the world trip once and by the time we got to the Indian Ocean, we were bored stiff of beaches and couldn't wait to move on. I appreciate lazing on the beach more when I've had a run of hard work.

MrsR87 · 10/04/2023 09:08

Sounds wonderful. Before kids, we went to adult only hotels in Mexico regularly. The first time for our honeymoon we did four proper day trips but in subsequent years, we didn’t leave the hotel very often.

We would break our day up a little bit more by doing things like wine tasting/ dance classes/ Spanish lessons etc but other than that, most of the day spent around the pool/ bars/ eating/ spa. My goodness I miss it. Enjoy!

MrsHsGirl · 10/04/2023 09:33

I am mid 30s with young children and this is the holiday I dream of for the future!

TheChosenTwo · 10/04/2023 09:43

A pp was correct saying holidays mean different things to different people. Thankfully there are holidays around to meet everyone’s needs!
Dh and I went on holiday at the end of last year just the two of us without the dc. A much needed break, we’d both had a terrible 5 months prior to the holiday, incredibly stressful and heartbreaking.
We got there, spent 3 of our 8 days out and about on organised tours soaking up the culture, one of the days out on our own and the rest of the time strolling up and down the beach to various beach bars and also laying by the pool. We were waking up at 5/6 and in bed every single night before 11oclock! I’m not in bed asleep by 11 at home but a combination of the weather and daytime drinking (not necessarily getting smashed although a couple of the days we were quite drunk!) meant we were asleep early. I think one night we were back in bed by 9 😂
felt really relaxed by the time we came home.
Suited us perfectly. If it suits you then what’s the problem?

gloriousmulch · 10/04/2023 09:50

Surely it’s only boring if it bores you? It sounds like a lovely, indulgent holiday to
me.

SpecialControlGroup · 10/04/2023 09:59

Sounds lovely. I'm constantly on the go at home, so relish some down time on holiday so lazy days interspersed with some 'doing days'.

I want to come back from my holiday refreshed and relaxed so the idea of being in the go all holiday would be hell for me.
