Anybody else really boring on holiday?

We're currently on holiday in Mexico. It's amazing, fabulous hotel and just loving our time here. Both mid fifties and done the holidays with mates plus holidays with young and then teenage kids. Our time now.

Explored the area, day on the beach and done a couple of trips but our day to day is pretty boring really.

We're early risers so breakfast is 7-7.30am. Down by the pool by 8am. Early morning sun and the quiet is bliss. The noise of the animals and birds so different to the U.K. birdsong.

Couple of iced coffees when the bar opens at 10am. Reading, listening to music, swim. Lunch at 1 ish and afternoon, few cocktails and back to the book under the shade.

Evening meal at the a la cartes around 7pm, last drink in the bar and we're back in our room by 9pm.

We just can't seem to extend our evenings. We're both quite happy with this, don't think I could stay up until 11pm.

Anyone else in a similar holiday vibe?

On the go!

Georgyporky · 10/04/2023 10:21

Glad OP is enjoying it. I spent a month in Mexico a few years ago, & loved it.
Lots of things to see & do.
I can slob around & read a book at home, I'd be wasting my money to do that on holiday !

TruffleShuffles · 10/04/2023 12:04

I think it also makes a difference if it’s your only holiday of the year, I love a holiday like the OP describes as I’m lucky that I can go away more than once a year. I will have another holiday where I’ll go a do more exploring but I also need a holiday which is purely relaxing.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/04/2023 12:07

It sounds lovely to me, just shifted forwards 3 hours!

who cares what anyone else thinks, if you’re happy that’s all that matters.

happy holidays!

Each to his own I guess but I'm also puzzled why you would go that far to laze in a beach resort.

We usually get up late around 9.30, have a leisurely breakfast and sunbathe until lunch then spend the afternoons exploring, trips, etc. in bed by 11pm. We went on a round the world trip once and by the time we got to the Indian Ocean, we were bored stiff of beaches and couldn't wait to move on. I appreciate lazing on the beach more when I've had a run of hard work.

We haven't. We're off to visit the Coba ruin's tomorrow and to swim in a cenote too.

Total opposite here. The idea of spending time and effort to go somewhere and then sitting on a beach / by a pool would drive us insane. We'd want as many experiences as possible. We're all different! We had ten days in the Yucatan and did the Cancun clubs, visited several Mayan sites (Chichen Itza, Tulum and a couple in the jungle that I forget), hired a VW Beetle and visited Merida and some of the towns (the one that's painted yellow), got stopped by police and shaken down for a bribe (pretended we didn't speak Spanish and they gave up), had some amazing food (and not so amazing). All good fun.

Snoken · 10/04/2023 12:49

I would hate sitting down for an entire day. I can’t even sit through a movie. I can do maybe 1 or 2 hours in a sun lounger but not an entire day. I like to exercise, go for walks, leave the resort for lunch, do some shopping etc. I need to move around or else I just feel so tired. Being forced to sit down during a long flight is bad enough, wouldn’t want to continue that once I’m there.

Sotiredmjmmy · 10/04/2023 12:51

This sums up our Mexico holiday too!

thebestbirtheraccordingtoDD · 10/04/2023 13:22

It sounds amazing. We did Mexico last year. Plenty of sight seeing but plenty of chilling on the beach or by the pool.
Not too late getting to bed.

Amazing place

HolidayHappy123 · 10/04/2023 14:49

I'm currently somewhere beautiful, tropical and extremely luxurious. The daily itinerary is:

9.30 alarm
10.00 breakfast
11-5 pool (lunch on sun lounger)
5-7.30 chilling in the room
7.30 dinner
10.30 bed

I'm loving the downtime. DH is bored out of his mind. Teens are in and out of the pool, making friends, roaming the resort etc.

HolidayHappy123 · 10/04/2023 14:52

Highly recommended a trip from Playa to Merida to visit Uxmal, the less touristy Mayan temple, visit the market and maybe a cenote on the way back.

PetitPorpoise · 10/04/2023 14:55

Sounds perfect to me. I don't need to be entertained all the time. Time to read and just 'be' is the ultimate goal for me.

FawnFrenchieMum · 10/04/2023 15:01

I used to say I could never do all inclusive and we get bored round a pool etc, but these days I’m eating my words and find it absolutely bliss.
When the teens are with us we have to agree to do ‘something’ every other day, even if just a stroll round the shops or something but me & DH are going alone later in the year and what you have described is exactly what I plan to do!

This sums up our Mexico holiday too!

Surely you could go to anywhere hot with a beach and get the same. Why go all the way to Mexico? You must have done something else too.

Possibly to get the temperature. No where in Europe is guaranteed hot in early April. We are on the flight home from Thailand - had a fairly relaxed holiday with some sight seeing as well. It's been mid 30s every day, it's high 20s at night. If we'd been in Europe we would be lucky to have low to mid 20s at best in April.

Had a very relaxing holiday in Jamaica last February, just me and DH. Had plans to do stuff but we were both so ready for a complete break we did very little bar read and soak up the sun for a week. Very unusual for us to do so little but very much needed, again - we went for the weather.

userxx · 10/04/2023 17:38

I can do that for for a few days before I get bored and fidgety.

TrueScrumptious · 10/04/2023 17:42

I like that sort of holiday, but I wouldn’t go to Mexico for it. What’s the point if you don’t leave the hotel grounds?

We were on a cruise in Central America (including Mexico), and then five days in Jamaica.

We loved the cruise, but all we wanted was to find a quite corner to read our books (separately). I was underwhelmed in our AI hotel in Jamaica. The food was rubbish, the beach you had to put your towels out by 6am. DH was happy to go to the evening entertainment, but I was happy to read my book. We queued up for cocktails at 10am.

We have left the grounds plenty of times.

Done the Canaries, which aren't always guaranteed good temps at Easter. For a few extra ££ you can get guaranteed sunshine in the Caribbean.

It's a no brainer!

OP posts:
CraftyGin · 10/04/2023 18:45

When we were in the Canaries last March, we had temperatures of 16 - 20 degrees.

In the Caribbean/Central America two weeks ago, it was 30 degrees day and night.

When we flew to Tenerife last year, we felt the full throttle of 4 hours of air travel plus delays and Covid restrictions. Flying to Jamaica this year, we had 10 hours of flights, but it was 1h15 minutes from landing to cocktails on the pool deck. Via Tenerife, it was 5pm till our first drink. Montego Bay, we were chilled by 3.30.

Coming back. so much of your time is overnight and hopefully asleep.

I’m amazed at how many people don’t have any interest in the country they are visiting beyond a local town and the beach. Mexico has plenty to see. The Caribbean islands too. We always travel in the country we are going too. I guess it’s the difference between wanting to actually see the best a country has to offer and flopping in one place.

I feel the same to be honest, I couldn't abide just sitting by a pool and reading (much as I love to read!) My husband would love a few days of doing that though. Which is why I plan our holidays 😄 Then again, sharing a resort pool with hundreds of other people doesn't appeal either.

I much prefer city breaks (with pool access) so we can see everything and chill out by the water at night. I hate the feeling that we've "missed" something and I love to explore new places.

A friend was described me as a human doing rather than a human being...I think she's right.

ClassicLib · 10/04/2023 18:53

Holidays are a very personal thing. I’m not a resort hotel person at all. We tried AI in the Caribbean once; it was fine, but we were bored by the end of day 2. A cruise with dress codes & seating plans for dinner so we can meet Dave & Susan from Derby and cheesy ‘entertainment’ and excursions with bus loads of tourists sounds like my idea of hell. My parents love them, and keep asking us to go on a cruise with them, but it ain’t happening.
For us, holidays are about quality time for just the two of us, going native with the local food & wine and the very last thing I would want to do is socialise with other British tourists. I will stick to city breaks, off the beaten track road trips & self catering villas.

TizerorFizz · 10/04/2023 21:34

@ClassicLib You might like small expedition ships. We have also explored the Great Bear Rainforest in Canada on a yacht for 12 guests. Really calming experience!

Totally, why wouldn’t you
