Would you go to Thailand or the Caribbean?

Trying to decide between the two. Could either go to the Caribbean or Thailand for 10 nights.
I’ve been to both. Caribbean feels more ‘special’ but Thailand more tropical.

Because of the different costs involved it’s
10 nights B&B/Self Catering in middle range Caribbean accommodation. Maybe Premium econ flights. Only 8 hours from London, and smaller time difference.

or it’s 10 nights in a Thai 5* hotel with breakfast. Eat dinner out every night. But flight is a lot longer and expensive. Bigger time difference.

Thailand...lovely food , massages and fab shopping ! And lots cheaper for eating out and doing things.

Thailand

NevieSticks · 01/03/2023 23:11

Which destinations though?

JennyTheDonkey · 01/03/2023 23:20

Thailand. There are some places in the Caribbean I fancy but so many of the tourist places seem to be compounds which isn't my cup of tea.

Well surely if you've been to both, then you know which you prefer, and whether the pros outweigh the cons.

Personally I would go to Thailand because I've never been there, and I was lucky enough to spend time in Jamaica when I was younger, and I'd like to have as many different experiences whilst I am fit enough to travel, but, if you've been to both, surely you know which you would prefer ?

Looking at Koh Samui in Thailand, and Barbados in the Caribbean. Or maybe Antigua.

Been to Koh Samui and Antigua....hotels much much nicer in Koh Samui, much nicer experience all round and people are so friendly ( great spa experience , fab food, gorgeous beaches, places to visit- definitely go on a boat trip to the National Marine park at An Thong )

Antigua just looked tired and hotels not nearly as luxurious as those in Thailand

I love Koh Samui at the right time of the year when it's not peeing down rain. It's casual, great food, beautiful beaches and you can wander about at markets etc.
Antigua is lovely too and plenty to do. No night shops/markets like in Thailand. You do have to be aware in the Caribbean about safety but generally people are friendly. I don't understand what someone said about it all being compounds - definitely not the case with the exception of Jamaica. The Caribbean is definitely more expensive than Thailand.

NevieSticks · 02/03/2023 11:15

Yes I would also add there is quite a difference in the attitude towards tourists between the two places.

reluctantbrit · 02/03/2023 17:25

Barbados is safe and we had a great time but I wouldn't go again while I would jump on the possibility to go back to Thailand.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 02/03/2023 17:28

I don’t think I’d want to do Caribbean on a self catering basis therefore Thailand gets my vote.

ellecf21 · 02/03/2023 17:31

Thailand for me is just a 10/10 destination.

Antigua definitely isn't like this. We have been self catering and self driving. Been all over the island, eating in a range of places around the island, visiting much of the place. It's very very safe. It feels welcoming and we've never encountered any issues at all.

Abraxan · 02/03/2023 17:50

Can't comment on Thailand yet though we are going SC at Easter.

Crime there tends to be opportunistic and I wouldn't describe it as "very very safe". During the day is Ok and at night most but not all areas.- like St John's or Grays Farm. It is certainly much safer than Jamaica.

Holidayqueen1 · 03/03/2023 15:20

Thailand every time! I have travelled through Thailand as a lone female and never felt unsafe. The food, the people, the hospitality. The hotels- amazing!
I’ve been to both Antigua and Barbados and wouldn’t rush back to either.

KatharinaRosalie · 03/03/2023 16:37

Thailand and I've been to all the places mentioned.

Pearfacebananapoop · 03/03/2023 16:57

Barbados every time.

Thailand is on my list but I haven't got there yet because... Barbados 🤣

The flight is easy, the place is stunning, restaurants are out of this world.

Loads to do if you want to or just sit back and relax or "lime" as the locals say.

Ridiculous comment. You do know some of the best restaurants in the world are in Barbados and several of the other islands aren't far behind. Caribbean fine dining is something to behold.

Crumpledstilstkin · 03/03/2023 17:02

There's plenty of the Carribbean beyond Barbados! Why not go below the hurricane belt to the Carribbean coast of Central America? Same vibe but better wildlife.

80sMum · 03/03/2023 17:07

I've been to the Caribbean once, to St Lucia, about 25 years ago. Once was enough to put me off from ever returning.

I've never been to Thailand, so that would get my vote.

But eating out in restaurants is not self-catering though is it, it's the opposite!

SoCrossAboutThis · 03/03/2023 17:12

I e been to both (inc Koh Samui but not Barbados specifically ) and I would say Thailand. Love the food and the scenery, it feels more tropical to me. I think I like how different the culture is.

also what time of year because think about hurricanes and rainy seasons?
