Would you go to Thailand or the Caribbean?

Trying to decide between the two. Could either go to the Caribbean or Thailand for 10 nights.
I’ve been to both. Caribbean feels more ‘special’ but Thailand more tropical.

Because of the different costs involved it’s
10 nights B&B/Self Catering in middle range Caribbean accommodation. Maybe Premium econ flights. Only 8 hours from London, and smaller time difference.

or it’s 10 nights in a Thai 5* hotel with breakfast. Eat dinner out every night. But flight is a lot longer and expensive. Bigger time difference.

Ridiculous comment. You do know some of the best restaurants in the world are in Barbados and several of the other islands aren't far behind. Caribbean fine dining is something to behold.

Ridiculous to assume anyone on a self catering holiday would want to eat at the best restaurants for every meal. I like to eat out but 'the best restaurants' are out of my budget. I've been to Barbados, groceries are expensive if you are SELF Catering. I clearly posted MY opinion, don't be so condescending.

Pearfacebananapoop · 03/03/2023 17:41

@CeeceeBloomingdale not being condescending at all. Don't assume everyone who stays in self catering wants to actually cook! A lot of people do it so they aren't stuck in an AI resort without any choice and can experience everything from street food to fine dining. Your original comment did not infer any knowledge of the island at all.

Aposterhasnoname · 03/03/2023 17:44

Thailand all day and all night and I’ve been to all the places mentioned

underneaththeash · 03/03/2023 18:30

What time of year?
it's cheaper to go AI in the Caribbean

AviMav · 03/03/2023 18:46

There's lots of different Carribean Islands OP.
You haven't said what your looking for exactly from your holiday and tell us a rough budget?

I personally would vote 10 nights carribean Thailand looks great but too long of a flight to do under 2 weeks.

You have Mexico, Costa Rica, Cuba and many others. They are all different though.

Royalton hotel in Antigua AL looks dreamy when I've searched hols.

Condescending again. No assumptions here, I normally self cater which I translate as buttering the occasional croissant and eating in restaurants but the vast majority of people mean 'self catering' when they say self catering. Barbados is not somewhere I'd self cater, unless I had an unlimited budget I'd go for an ultra all inclusive with several restaurants personally. The Caribbean and Indian Ocean are the only places I do AI as the alternative is either eye wateringly expensive restaurants or trekking about looking for street food or groceries. I have eaten out in both and shpoped for groceries in both so have 'the knowledge'.

Since when do I need to give my credentials to have an opinion on which of two destinations I'd prefer though? Although if you want credentials how about twenty five years working for a major airline?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 03/03/2023 18:54

Incidentally OP, Barbados is my least favourite Caribbean island and Antigua is my favourite. There are lots of great Carribean islands though. St Lucia was much better for cheap and well stocked supermarkets than Barbados if you are self catering in a villa and only eating out now and then.

DuvetDownn · 03/03/2023 18:57

Thailand for me as I’ve been to the Caribbean many times.

But eating out in restaurants is not self-catering though is it, it's the opposite!

It is why I go self catering sometimes. I don't want to eat in the same place every night, so we go self catering and are not tied to hotel eating, but have all meals in different restaurants. My favourite way to holiday.

You can do this with a hotel offering just Bed and Breakfast, my colleague did this on his honeymoon in Barbados. They had the option of the hotel restaurant or going out.

For Barbados ideal, I wasn't keen on going out in St. Lucia though.

You get a comfortable hotel and the freedom to do what you want.

We do a mix of types of accommodation. We like doing as you do, but often there are lots of lovely breakfast places and I want variety there too, so a villa is the better option. This year is our first as a family of 4, there will be 2 children, one weaning. So the madness of AI is probably fairest on our fellow travellers. We still will go out for meals though, it just means an option is always easily accessible.

Thailand

Zola1 · 03/03/2023 21:12

Thailand with those circs

maddy68 · 03/03/2023 21:16

Thailand. Once you've seen one white beach you've seen them all

but how about a pink one?

IntentionalError · 03/03/2023 23:47

Thailand, because I have never been there, while I have been to Antigua, Barbados & St Lucia.

runforyourdog · 03/03/2023 23:59

I would rather go to Thailand as a couple but Barbados if you have small kids.

runforyourdog · 03/03/2023 23:59

(Been to both)

whatyoulookingfor · 04/03/2023 00:04

Thailand is bloody amazing.

fizzykoalablanket · 04/03/2023 00:32

Thailand - amazing place.

My holiday in the Caribbean was the worst holiday of my life (Antigua) hated it and would have returned home early if I could have.

Blossomed · 04/03/2023 00:36

Depends on the time of year really. Caribbean beaches can be stunning…but they can also be full of seaweed if you go at the wrong time (recent global warming issue maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️). Similarly, Thailand in rainy season isn’t as good, although still lovely of course 😊 If budget is a concern though, go to Thailand. The Caribbean is significantly more expensive when you get there!

Moonshine5 · 04/03/2023 00:40

Thailand every time (and I adore the Caribbean)

LadyGAgain · 04/03/2023 00:46

They're totally different!
I'd choose Thailand as it's so stunning and the food and people and ethos play to our motivation.
When we went o Antigua it was absolutely brilliant!! Stunning beaches and again. People amazing.
What an 'awful' decision OP ☺️

fizzykoalablanket · 04/03/2023 00:57

My experience of Antigua was drug dealers, druggies, animal abusers beating, running their cars over and drowning the stray dogs.

Honestly I do not have a single good memory of Antigua at all.
However it was some years ago so hopefully things have changed.
I'm also aware this was not all of the Island or of course all of the people........we saw examples of this every single day though.

Hobbesmanc · 04/03/2023 09:11

Always Thailand. We've had great Caribbean and Indian Ocean trips. But none we'd go back to. But a Thailand we return as often as we can. Simply no where offers the service, charm, culture , food etc.
