Your favourite place in Spain

I'm off to Spain in August for 3 weeks. I will be travelling with my husband and our 6 year old and have no set route in mind. We will fly into Alicante as our first stop is in the mountains nearby. What is your favourite not too touristy place to stay? I've been to Barcelona a few times, but not Madrid or Seville. Thanks in advance 🙂

Malaga
Valencia
San Sebastián
Not necessarily in any particular order as they're all very different but I love them all.

Seville is lovely but outrageously hot in August.
Don't miss Cadiz.

@Youkilledmyfatherpreparetodie the mountains around Valencia are beautiful too

Chickenkorma64 · 17/12/2022 19:14

August temperature are often brutal. Stick to the coast.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/12/2022 19:28

I did a Malaga and old Marbella combo and enjoyed that a lot. Many of my friends really like Nerja

TakeYourFinalPosition · 17/12/2022 19:30

You may well want the coast in August. Southern Spain will be roasting. I’ve lived there through two Augusts, it’s tough going!

Enjoy your holiday. Spain is gorgeous.

Albir

Seville…

… but not in August. A lot of places are closed as everyone goes off to the coast because it’s roasting. However, in cooler months, always Seville ❤️

I loved Barcelona when I went, but my most memorable trip to Spain was when we visited a place called Mijas, just south of Malaga. Absolutely stunning town, full of lovely little restaurants with gorgeous views of the hills. I'd love to go back!

Three weeks is a long time. I’d head up to Aragon: Teruel - Zaragoza - Huesca and up into the edge of the Pyrenees. It will get cooler the further you go, and in August in Spain I’d take that. I’m biased over having family there.

Operating closer to Alicante, I’d go down to somewhere near Murcia, then Albacete, Cuenca and across to around Valencia and back down avoiding the coast. Not that the coast is bad, just that my preference in Spain is inland and I prefer mountains, countryside, history, towns and villages inland over the coast.

As has been stated, inland Spain, especially the Meseta, is dry hot in August.

On a road trip always check out Paradores as some are gems.

I love Rhonda and Marbella. Valencia is beautiful too, had a really good time there. Madrid was probably the best night out I've ever had but it was almost 20 years ago now and it involved male models and drugs so probably wouldn't be something I'd repeat.

Seville
Granada
Barcelona
Salamanca
Cadiz
Madrid
Segovia

Probably in that order....Seville definitely top though.

midsomermurderess · 17/12/2022 23:30

Asturias. It has a very lovely coastline with pretty, steep fishing villages, inland, gentle rolling hills where apparently much of Spain’s milk comes from, and then, boom, the towering, magnificent Picos. It never gets terribly hot.

bert3400 · 18/12/2022 10:01

In August I would stay along the coast, inland will be extremely hot . As you are landing in Alicante I would spend a day there, it's a beautiful city - which most people pass through via the airport . Moraira, Javea and Denia are all beautiful, smaller towns with great beaches and traditional 'old towns and port' then I would travel up to Valencia. So much to do especially for kids . A wonderful safe city. Have lived on the Costa Blanca for 3 years and the scenery is stunning .

theremustonlybeone · 18/12/2022 12:42

You will be doing a lot of driving if your planning to head to Seville from Alicante. I would definitely head off to Granada and visit the Alhambra. Also Ronda is stunning, there are some lovely little places along the coastal road heading towards Malaga. There is an amazing outside roman spa in Casares which is a definite www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1055348-d7208069-Reviews-Banos_de_la_Hedionda-Casares_Costa_del_Sol_Province_of_Malaga_Andalucia.html
