Your favourite place in Spain

I'm off to Spain in August for 3 weeks. I will be travelling with my husband and our 6 year old and have no set route in mind. We will fly into Alicante as our first stop is in the mountains nearby. What is your favourite not too touristy place to stay? I've been to Barcelona a few times, but not Madrid or Seville. Thanks in advance 🙂

Andalucía is magical but not in august. We were in Granada last august when it hit 50 degrees!

in august I’d stay up in the Basque Country.

but some wonderful, undiscovered towns I don’t think have been mentioned here are:

Elche (palm tree fields for miles)
Merida (like Rome but without the tourists, ruins everywhere!)
Caceres
Figueres, Roses, the Dali coast

Spain is just enchanting. It has so many different cultures and landscapes in the one country.

Have a great time. I've been there twice
and loved it. Don't forget to see Barcelona.

My favourite parts of mainland Spain are Nerja and Cadiz.

I love the area around Begur in Catalunya and also Cadaques which is my favourite town. Figueroa, Port Ligat and then onto Sitges would be my dream holiday!

Thanks so much to everyone for the recommendations. This is my tentative route, any comments and suggestions for accommodation etc gratefully received.

Aug 12-19- Fly to Alicante. Mountains near Elche with friends for 1 week. This is booked and we have a car. Look up Casa Almores if anyone has small children under 7. It's the best.

19-22. Return car to Alicante (we've stayed in Alicante before so won't this time). Take train to Valencia. Stay for 3 nights. Apartment next to the beach booked.

22 - 24 - Take train to Madrid. Stay for two nights. Book hotel with swimming pool as it will be hot, hot, hot

24 - 27 - Take train or fly to San Sebastian. Train is 5 hours but faffing at the airport will be about the same and I imagine the route is pretty?

27 - 1st - Cross to France and Eurocamp it or head towards Bilbao?

1st - Fly from Biarritz to Germany for family party.

3rd - Fly back to UK
