Your favourite place in Spain

I'm off to Spain in August for 3 weeks. I will be travelling with my husband and our 6 year old and have no set route in mind. We will fly into Alicante as our first stop is in the mountains nearby. What is your favourite not too touristy place to stay? I've been to Barcelona a few times, but not Madrid or Seville. Thanks in advance 🙂

Tarifa - old Moorish walled city with lots of bars and restaurants that only appear at night. 10 km white sand beach, with lots of kite surfing. Costa de la Luz is very underrated.

We had an English friend living in Malaga city itself, so spend many holidays there which I thoroughly enjoyed much more than the far more touristy resorts along the coast.

A day trip I absolutely loved from there was Ronda

A day trip from Madrid I loved was Toledo including the cathedral

Zaragoza was a place I would never have gone to except DH had a conference there. It felt far less touristy than other places yet lots to see and do

I found the trains in Spain easy to book online, clean and easy to navigate so would recommend.

I've been to Tarifa three times, lovely place

It's changed a lot since the first time I went 15-20 years ago, before it felt very undiscovered

Murcia is lovely.

@MMBaranova
I agree that Zaragoza is worth visiting but it is definitely not necessarily the case that the further north you go the cooler it gets in the summer. Zaragoza is in the middle of a plain a long way from the coast and is sometimes the hottest place in the country. I used to live there and have experienced 45 degrees. If you go towards the Pyrenees from there eg. To Huesca it is cooler and fresher in summer.

So many great places have been suggested on here. Seville is always great. Apart from that, it depends on what you want. Sea? Mountains? City? Rural? Spain is just full of amazing places. You have to decide what kind of place you are after.

Agree with the PP who said Mijas - the caramelised nuts from the street sellers are amazing!

Twopenceworthtoday · 19/12/2022 20:53

Honestly, If you can handle the heat absolutely visit these recommended places, but for me personally in August I'd go North to Galicia and the beautiful less touristy places on that coastline.

IntentionalError · 19/12/2022 21:06

Cadiz is wonderful, as are the nearby Sherry making towns of Jerez & Sanlucar and the Costa de la Luz. At the other end of the country, the Basque Country is a great part of the world with a world class foodie culture. Donostia / San Sebastián is a spectacular coastal city with a great beach.

Spain is wonderful, as long as you steer well clear of the resorts frequented by the ‘Brits abroad’ brigade.

LightDrizzle · 19/12/2022 21:10

Granada, but not in August. I’d go to the Picos de Europa and Galicia and stop off in Santiago de Compostela.

JackieDaws · 19/12/2022 21:15

Salou, Benidorm and Torremolinos.

Doodar · 19/12/2022 21:17

Cambrills is lovely, Rhonda, Sitges.

Nichebitch · 19/12/2022 21:24

I’m Spanish - all those places are lovely, but if you’re travelling in August stay away from the south, the heat can ruin your holiday! Specially Seville or anywhere not on the coast. San Sebastián or Asturias might be a good idea.

MerryMarigold · 19/12/2022 22:02

I absolutely loved the Alhambra in Granada. I'm dying to take my kids there.

Yes this, 25 years ago I felt like a pioneer 😂, but still, hands down Tarifa.

Granada, but not in August. I’d go to the Picos de Europa and Galicia and stop off in Santiago de Compostela.

We went to Grenada at Easter and the weather was mid 20's & definitely more comfortable than in summer.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 19/12/2022 22:23

Ronda. No doubt.

bellocchild · 19/12/2022 22:37

Tarragona. Roman capital of Spain.

VacancyAtNumber10AGAIN · 20/12/2022 01:56

Also to add, Polop, Guadalest and the waterfalls in Algar are absolutely beautiful, all located around Valencia/Alicante :) enjoy your trip x

mondaytosunday · 20/12/2022 01:59

Granada. Mojacar (up in the village, not down at the beach).

Sagittariuschar · 20/12/2022 02:07

I’ve been to Sevilla, Valencia, Barcelona, Majorca, Menorca, Lanzarote (if you call that Spain more Canary Island), Tenerife, Ibiza, Palma, Alcudia and Salou.
When I went to Menorca, Lanzarote, Alcudia and Salou there was lots of us and lots of children, great family resorts and beautiful. The other places I went for get always and to sight see with my partner. I got back from Lanzarote Tuesday without children and it was absolutely stunning. It was very hot also! I came back to the UK with a good tan. Majorca is so beautiful too!!

Dreamscomingtrue · 20/12/2022 02:07

Asturias, Picos Mountain range and loads of lovely beaches. I’ve been going there for years, weathers usually nice in summer and not too hot.

Benalmadena on the Costa del Sol.
