Holidays
Can't go to an EU country - where else for August?
LittleGreyFluffyCat · 26/04/2022 16:58
I was planning to start researching and book a holiday in the South of France. Eldest DC just told me today that won't work for him, because he's already had his 90 days in Europe (gap year activities).
Brexit rules mean he can't go back into the EU "After Brexit, you can stay in the EU, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland without a visa for up to 90 days in a 180-day period."
I'm feeling stuck now! Anyone got any ideas? Ideal criteria:
- Not so hot you can't do anything
- Shortest flight possible (I hate flying)
- Not super-expensive luxury prices, as budget as possible for non EU
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/04/2022 17:05
You can still come to Ireland, it's EU but there is a pre-existing free movement agreement between UK and Ireland that allows citizens from either country to live and work in the other country and to travel between them without restrictions. If you want luxury it will be expensive though.
Northernsoullover · 26/04/2022 17:06
I didn't realise your 90 days were for the whole of Europe. Thank goodness I'm not in a position to need this. How utterly shit. Another layer of Brexit shit.
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/04/2022 17:11
You could also have a look at some of the Adriatic countries like Montenegro, Albania or North Macedonia. I'm not sure that I would choose Albania to holiday in but I think Montenegro and North Macedonia are pretty, no coastline in North Macedonia though so not the place if you need a beach.
CuddlyCactus · 26/04/2022 17:11
Yep Brexit is the gift that keeps on giving.
Ireland is fab for a holiday, loads to do and no restrictions as we're in common travel area.
Discovereads · 26/04/2022 17:12
Yes Ireland is in the EU. But could stay in U.K. and go to Northern Ireland.
other European countries not in EU are:
Albania
Montenegro
Lichtenstein
Andorra
Armenia
Monaco
San Marino
Serbia
Vatican
North Macedonia

There’s the Turkey owned half of Cyprus too…so Greek island but not Greece.
StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 26/04/2022 17:14
Norway isnt in the EU and is bloody beautiful. Although not keen on the brown cheese.
Discovereads · 26/04/2022 17:15
Close to French climate but still in U.K. are the Isles of Scilly.
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/04/2022 17:15
I've just had a look at this www.gov.uk/visit-eu-switzerland-norway-iceland-liechtenstein page which says that "There are different rules for Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania. They each have their own separate 90-day limits. The time you spend in other countries does not affect how long you can spend in each of these countries without a visa." So that opens up a few more countries for you.
PriamFarrl · 26/04/2022 17:15
I had no idea about this. Brexit is brilliant isn’t it.
I’ve just read up on it and it seems it’s 90 days out of the last 180 days if that helps.
Discovereads · 26/04/2022 17:17
Long flight, but stunning place is St Helena in south Atlantic. It’s a British territory.
TeenPlusCat · 26/04/2022 17:18
Hang on. There is still 90 days to go until August.
So won't some of your DS's time have 'expired' by then? Or is he still out there?
BurscoughBooths · 26/04/2022 17:19
It’s 90 days max per 180 days - surely by august your DS will be able to go back to the EU?
Fupoffyagrasshole · 26/04/2022 17:20
You can still go to Ireland there’s a awperstw arrangement.
id go to Morocco if I was you - it’s a bit different than anywhere in Europe - we had a great time there

This.

Yes Ireland is in the EU. But could stay in U.K. and go to Northern Ireland.
But we've always had a different arrangement with Ireland, it's called the common travel area.

Croatia would be my choice.
Croatia is in the EU.
Can you go to Mexico or Costa Rica instead?
What a stupid pain in the arse.
